Can I claim my rental car expense when working out of state? I do get W-2 from the company I contract with. (I'm not self employed)?

I get my jobs or contracts from a company that recruits us for work out of our primary resident state. For example, I travel to the state of Arizona and usually work there under a contract for approximately 8 weeks, twice a year. At the end of the year, I do get a W-2 from them.  The last job I did for them, I flew out and rented a car while I was working there instead of driving my personal vehicle all the way to Arizona like I have done in the past.

Thanks for your help!

Yes, if you are not reimbursed for your travel expenses (including a rental car) to a temporary job site, then you can deduct those job-related expenses.  Note, though, that in order to deduct job-related expenses, you must itemize expenses on your tax return (instead of taking the standard deduction) and job-related expenses are subject to the 2% of AGI floor (meaning you can only deduct the amount of your job-related expenses that exceed 2% of your adjusted gross income.)

Here is more information regarding the deductibility of job-related expenses, plus steps to take to enter the job-related expenses on Form 2106 in TurboTax.

To enter your job-related expenses, take the following steps:

From within your federal return, type "Form 2106" in the FIND field at the top of the screen.  Select "Jump To Form 2106" and you will be brought to this section of TurboTax.
