I purchased a home in March 2025 and took out a mortgage of $920,000. I refinanced the loan in December 2025 with a new loan of $915,000. For 2025: Loan 1 was active from March–December Loan 2 was active in December When calculating the mortgage interest limitation under the $750,000 cap (post-2017 loans), how should I determine the “average mortgage balance” for 2025? Specifically: Should I use a full-year average (e.g., ~$910K as calculated by software), or Should I adjust for the fact that the mortgage only existed from March–December and use a time-weighted i.e. (sum of mortgage statements (March to Dec) + 0 (for Jan-Feb))/12 (~$766K)? I want to ensure the calculation aligns with IRS Publication 936 for a loan that was not outstanding for the full year and was refinanced in the year.

Are you referring to a scary screen at EasyExtension that says you will be filing your returns? See this other thread and if it describes what you are experiencing. There are some images there, too. https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/taxes/discussion/extension-verbiage-indicates-taxes-are-being-filed/00/3825122 If that's your situation, a couple of users proceeded and said it just filed their extension request. A TurboTax employee in that thread said the wording won't be changed until after filing season. IMO, it's easier and faster to file an extension request at the IRS website and pay the expected tax due there. You can file an extension request at the online IRS website a couple of ways: You can go to https://www.irs.gov/payments and choose to pay your expected taxes due toward a Form 1040, and for reason choose "extension", and you can pay directly from your bank account (or by debit/credit card.) Choose the correct tax year. Print out your confirmation. Or if you have an online IRS account, you can sign into your online account at the IRS and then go to the payments section to pay your expected taxes due. Again, you will have a form where you can choose "extension" as the reason for the payment. NOTE: There is no fee if you pay directly from your bank account. There are fees for debit and credit card. The card fee can be hefty if your tax payment is large.

I believe there is an issue with the form. Since my parents do not live in CA, I entered 0 for all lines prompting me about their 540/540NR. Line 18 says that it should take the the maximum of line 16 and line 17, but the value in line 18 is not corresponding to either of those, but is a higher number instead. I believe this is a bug with the software. My token number is #13915434168795589-57971756

@ Rick2866 wrote: The TurboTax final review is reporting 2 entries on the Tax Summary Form that are marked as estimate but when you open that form there are no field that are marked as an estimate. So how do you clear an estimate error that is not there? I'll assume you are using desktop software as opposed to Online TurboTax. The Tax Summary form is informational and is not filed with the return. The figures on it flow from other worksheets. On the Tax Summary form in question is there any entry in red italics? Or is everything in normal black type? Or are there any figures in black italics? Any italics on the Tax Summary form would be a clue as to what topic they originated from. I just did a quick test, and my estimated figures from other worksheets show up in red italics on the Tax Summary as well as on the Form 1040. Do you have any figures in red or black italics on yours?

Update: I deleted my mortgage interest expense and all the other expenses showed up in the summary page. However, I then went to re-add my mortgage interest (after all other expenses were logged) and once I saved that entry, the summary page removed the other expenses that had already been added. All the categories show "Not Started" had values in them before the mortgage interest was added:

Hello, Turbotax calculated that I paid over $40,000 in state/local taxes in 2024, and advises I claim as an itemized deduction. But I don't understand how it arrived at that number of over $40,000. I paid $28700 in 2024 toward California tax. This was a combination of estimated (Q3 $700, Q4 - paid in early 2025 - $13,000) and extension ($15,000) payments. My 2024 return (also prepared using Turbotax Desktop 2024) reflects this number on the Turbotax 2024 California Return Summary under "Total Payments/Credits" and 2024 Form 540, line 78. I claimed a California state tax refund of $2,812 (2024 Form 540, line 115), and my California tax owed in 2024 was $25,888 (as reported on the Turbotax 2024 California Return Summary). I would expect the 2024 state tax that Turbotax 2025 thinks I owed to be $25,888. However, it somehow managed to compute it as slightly over $40,000, and reports this in Schedule A line 5a, claiming $40,000 as an itemized deduction. This seems incorrect, but I clearly must be misunderstanding something. Here is how I entered the relevant data: I visited the questionnaire under "Wages and Income"->"1099-MISC and other common income"->"State and Local Tax Refunds on Form 1099-G". The questionnaire asked me to report the refund received in 2025. I never got a 1099-G for my refund. Was I not supposed to enter this section? Anyway, I entered my payments and withholdings there as $28,700, wrote in the amount of refund as $2,812. When done, it took me to a page that asked "Let's check for uncommon situations", "Select all tax payments you made during 2025 to these states or localities toward 2024 taxes". I checked "2024 4th quarter estimated tax payment during 2025 to a state" and "Payment with a state extension filing", because, indeed, I made a 4th quarter estimated tax payment to California in January 2025, and an extension payment in April 2025. The next couple of pages asked me the amounts paid in estimated taxes in 2025 toward 2024, and the amount paid during the extension. The next page asked me what kind of deduction I took in 2024 (I took standard). Then it told me my refund isn't taxable and finished the questionnaire. Under "Deductions and Credits"->"Estimates and Other Taxes Paid"->"Estimates", I entered the estimated taxes paid for 2025 for federal and state (together totaling $40,000), and checked the numbers that were already entered in the previous questionnaire for 2024 state estimated taxes in 2025 (they were correctly mentioned as $13,000, since this was the 2024 Q4 estimated tax I paid in Jan 2025). Somehow, entering these things resulted in Turbotax calculating that I paid $40,257 toward state/local taxes, advising me to use itemized deductions, and filing $40,257 in Schedule A line 5a. I'm probably misunderstanding something big here. I'd appreciate any help in the right direction.

This will be the last year for me and TurboTax. So many software glitches that no one seems to care about. Many things just go in circles (e.g., having to re-do state return entries from the beginning-to-end Every Time the file is saved. Asking questions in "AI" box never answers the questions, and there are apparently no jump-to links that work, IF a jump-to link is offered. Have to use google to find anything resembling and answer/solution. Check boxes mysteriously appear on forms, after numerous attempts to delete them. This year was a nightmare. I will not return to this horrid software. I would rather scratch out my returns on a rock with a rusty nail. It would take less time.

@jandob All of the desktop software editions have the same capability. They differ only in the amount of guidance. The file you need in order to transfer into a new 2025 return is the *.tax2024 data file from last year. It's default location on a PC would be in the Documents\TurboTax folder, but it could be anywhere you chose to save it. So do you still have the *.tax2024 data file from last year, and do you know its location somewhere on your computer? I can tell you what normally happens when one begins a new 2025 return in the Windows version. When you launch 2025 TurboTax and choose to start a new return, it automatically begins churning a bit, and a little circle starts spinning while it searches your computer for the *.tax2024 data file (can take a minute or longer.) The program first looks in the Documents\TurboTax folder (the default.). If it finds it, it asks if you want to transfer it into your 2025 return. If it doesn't find it, you can use the Browse button to tell TurboTax where it is located. The Browse button pops up a little File Explorer window so you can point TurboTax to the location of the *.tax2024 data file. If yours didn't do that, then I can't explain it. I've never had it not search for the data file. But you can fairly quickly test it. Since the desktop software allows you to prepare multiple returns, you can create a test return. First make note of the location of the *.tax2024 data file. Then launch your 2025 TurboTax software, and choose to start a new tax return. See if the program churns and searches for the 2024 data file.
