I too am having this exact problem with TurboTax premier 2025 desktop. I know exactly what my 2026 withholding will be (it will be a percentage of my IRA RMD), but no matter what I do TT insists on using my actual 2025 withholding when calculating my 2026 estimated taxes. I even tried creating a fictitious W-2 in that dialog (I am retired and have no actual W-2), and it was totally ignored.   This problem is new to TT 2025. I have never had this problem in previous years.

@DC3 The fee for e-filing a state return when you use desktop software has been in effect for MANY years.   This is not new.    You get the software to prepare a state return, but there is a fee to e-file the state.  You can avoid the state e-file fee by printing and mailing the state.

It depends. The Roth contributions is limited by your total modified adjusted gross income (MAGI), not just self employment.   For 2025, for couples filing jointly, Roth IRA contributions are allowed up the maximum limit of $7,000 (plus $1,000 catch up if aged 50 or older) for MAGI up to $236,000.   $165,000 for single, head of household, or married filing separately and you didn’t live with your spouse at any time during the year; and  $10,000 for married filing separately and you lived with your spouse at any time during the year.   See this IRS publication, page 39   No contribution is allowed for MAGI of $246,000 or over for married filing jointly, and $165,000 for single, head of household and married filing separately and you didn’t live with your spouse at any time during the year.   Please update here if you have more details and or questions and we will help.

If you took the standard deduction on your federal return, the $400 rebate is not taxable.    If you itemized your deductions on your federal return, you may need to report the rebate as income on your 2025 federal return. NOTE: Even if you itemized, the rebate might still be non-taxable if your total state and local taxes (SALT) exceeded the $10,000 federal cap. If subtracting the $400 rebate from your total state taxes still leaves you above that $10,000 limit, the rebate generally isn't taxed.  If you used TurboTax, it will have your 2024 information transferred and will indicate it it is taxable if you enter the 1099-G.

CALIFORNIA state tax is unable to be opened. Loop of apparently successful download sequence, but Start button just reinitiates another download.  This problem was noted for the Business TT for NY, due to form not being available.  I can't believe the CA form is still not available this late in April?  Any help, please?  I really count on TT to fill out these forms and file! DID YOU E-FILE?   Did you e-file?   Did you go through all three steps of the FILE section and click a big orange button that said “Transmit my returns now?”     When you e-file your return you will get two emails from TurboTax.  The first one will say your return has been transmitted; the second one will tell you the IRS has accepted  or rejected your federal e-file.  If you filed a state return, there will be a third email (usually a day or two later) that tells you if the state e-file was accepted or rejected.   Check your e-file status:   https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/    What does it say in your account?  Does it show that the return was accepted?   Or does it say something else---like "rejected," "printed," or "ready to mail?”

Repayments of disability benefits to a private insurance company (often due to an SSDI lump-sum award) are handled based on the amount repaid and the year it was originally received as income.  To enter in TurboTax:   Enter the Social Security (SSA-1099) in the Federal > Wages & Income under Retirement Plans and Social Security and select Social Security (SSA-1099). Enter your SSA-1099 exactly as it appears. On the screen asking, "Did you receive any lump-sum payments for 2024 or earlier?", select Yes. TurboTax will guide you through the "Lump-Sum Election" method, which helps prevent a large back-payment from pushing you into a higher tax bracket. This will correctly populate Line 6a (total benefits) and Line 6b (taxable portion) on your 1040.
