This rounding error cannot always be fixed by pre-rounding the values. In particular, with the box 2 and 3 values are rounded down, but box 1 is rounded up, there is no way to fix this short of putting in an incorrect value - one that does not match the 1099-Q. E.g. xx2.62. = xx1.19 + xx1.43 correctly rounds to 3 = 1 + 1, which throws the error.

Fidelity Investments should be able to split up your mother's investments in accordance with your mother's wishes.  Then both you and your sister will have your own Fidelity Investment account to report your own income earned on the investments.  It is possible that the investments will generate taxable income and taxes will be due next year.   In most cases, proceeds paid out from a life insurance policy is not taxable income.  See this TurboTax Help.   Contact legal counsel to assist you and your sister with administering your mother's will and dealing with all of these issues and other issues that may arise.   My sympathy to your for your loss.

Our family has TurboTax Home & Business (H&B). Someone in our family died last year and we apparently need to file a form 1041, which H&B doesn't include, but Business does. What is the best way to go about this? Should we get TurboTax Business just so we can file form 1041, or is there a better avenue?

I work in Rhode Island and live in Massachusetts.  My company started taking out MA state taxes even though I never asked (whole other issue).  Half way through the year they stopped taking out MA state taxes.  In my box 16 relating to Rhode Island taxes it is the same as box 1, however MA taxes box 16 is roughly half of box 1.   The problem is when I do my MA taxes through TurboTax it adds up both box 16's so my total taxable amount is way more than I made.  If I click the button to have it only include the MA state wages it seems my total taxable amount is too low.   My federal taxes and Rhode Island taxes are coming out fine, it is just affecting my MA taxes.  I am wondering if box 16 on my W-2 for MA is wrong.  I would think that the number should be 0 because I did not make any wages in MA, taxes were just taken out.  If box 16 was 0 then the taxes seem to come out correct.  Did my employer put in the wrong info in box 16?

You don't want to import it or transfer it in (that is for starting a new return with last year's info) - For a 2025 tax file, just open the almost completed tax return.    Go to the File menu up top, select OPEN Tax Return and then use Find Tax File to open that return you saved.     You need the tax file to open the return in the desktop software.     How do I find my tax data file (.tax file) on my Windows computer?      How do I find my tax data file (.tax file) in Mac?
That’s probably the fee charged by TurboTax to file a state return prepared on your desktop. It is not charged by California.

Thank you.   I am confused on how to answer the questions that turbo tax is asking.  Would you be able to advise on the below questions?   1. Do any uncommon situations apply? Someone co-owns this loan, and I only pay a portion of it. The seller is financing this loan and I didn't receive a 1098. None of these apply.   2. What kind of property is this loan for? Primary home This is where you live most of the time—can be a house, condo, mobile home, or other property types. Second home This is usually a vacation home. It can be rented out part-time as long as you live there for a certain amount of time each year. Other This includes rentals you don’t live in and business properties.   3. Did you pay points in 2022 when you took out the loan? I paid points when I refinanced, purchased a second home, or opened a home equity loan in 2022. I have already deducted all the points I paid in 2022, or I didn't pay any points.   4. Is this 1098 the most recent for your loan?  If you only have one 1098, select Yes. When you refinance or your lender sells your loan, you’ll get 1098s for the original and the new loan. When this happens, we need to know which is the most recent. Yes No   5. Let’s get some details about this loan This helps us know how much interest you can deduct this year. Learn more This loan is a home equity line of credit (HELOC). This loan is a refinance of a previous loan. This loan is neither of these.

Thank you I have some follow ups    1. I forgot to mention I have a rental property in Illinois and never lived there so I’d also be an Illinois nonresident correct?  NYC full resident, NC non resident and IL non resident?    2. Could you please also confirm my second question in the original post above? Here it is again:   In what order do I file each state to law sure I get the correct refund from whichever state? (NY , NC, IL)   3. Since NC withheld taxes on my W2 will it be refunded in my tax return when I put how many days I was in NC?   4. Can you please clarify when you mention I can file as a NC non resident if I made nyc my domicile? I had a NC license but I also got an nyc state id and I voted in nyc. I also had an apartment there the whole year even though I wasn’t there the whole year.  Does the above indicate I established domicile in NY?  Also just for knowledge if I hadn’t established NY domicile are you suggesting I’d need to file as NC part year resident instead of non resident (so all my income would be taxed for my days in NC rather than only the NC source income I believe)   5. Could you please confirm if one state should be giving me a credit and which one/for what?

At the screen Choose Type of Activity, did you select This K-1 has more than one value in boxes 1, 2, and 3?   If so, you would have entered box 1 income in one 'pass' and box 2 income in the second 'pass'.   However, the interest and dividend income reported on the K-1 should only be entered once.  Interest and dividend income should be reported in either the first 'pass' or the second 'pass' but not both.   The only exception would be if the preparer of the K-1 reports to you that the interest and dividend income reported on the K-1 should be allocated across the two activities.

I have an error message showing up on my Federal Carryforward Worksheet that has only a zero listed on the second line and indicates I need to fill in a State or Local ID for that zero. TurboTax will NOT let me delete the zero NOR let me enter a State or Local ID for that zero! I also am not able to delete the Federal Carryforward Worksheet. The other recommended “fixes” do not work.   I've been working on this for hours and cannot resolve the problem. This is the only thing holding up my tax return.   A helpful solution is needed!
