To take the full AOTC credit, $4,000 of box 1 must be held out. This means instead of the scholarship covering the full tuition in box 1, it covered only $10,270.  The taxable amount of box 5 minus box 1 is $33,063. You want to change that to $37,063 to claim the full credit. If you have other education expenses, that can reduce the taxable amount. As you go through the program, answer questions about the student and college. Time to enter expenses. Enter books and materials, other course related expenses, room and board, etc.    For example: other books and materials $0 room and board $37,063 For example: other books and materials $1,000 room and board $36,063
I know what to do now but I want to make it clear to TurboTax that they give extremely misleading information about restarting TurboTax to get "help" fixing this problem.
Yes, but only the portion of your monthly rent that is allocated for property taxes may be claimed.
I'm trying to do the same thing but I do not have a refile button so I cannot see the information entered last year. Any othr way? Thank you

FYI - Important Also be careful if the second return name is the same as another return. Turbo Tax saves the tax returns as 2025 Smith J Form 1040 Individual Tax Return.tax2025. So if you have two or more returns for people that have the same last name and first initial the second return will overwrite the first one.   So you have to be sure to first save the returns with names completely different to keep them apart. Don't use the default name given by the program. You need to go to FILE - SAVE AS and give the return a unique name you can tell apart. At least add the full first name. You don't have to use or accept the name Turbo Tax gives it. I save all my returns with different names.

If the software is skipping the "Value of your IRA" screen and jumping to Roth questions, it usually thinks you didn't have a distribution or a conversion that triggers the pro-rata rule.   Here is how to troubleshoot and force that entry:   1. Check your 1099-R Entry   Line 6 of Form 8606 usually triggers because you took money out of a Traditional IRA (either as a withdrawal or a conversion to a Roth). Go to the Wages & Income section. Find Retirement Plans and Social Security (1099-R). Ensure your 1099-R is entered correctly. If you did a Backdoor Roth, make sure the "Box 7" distribution code is handled as a "conversion to a Roth IRA" during the follow-up questions. 2. The "IRA Explanation Statement" Workaround If the software isn't prompting you for the December 31st value, try these steps to "jog" the interview:   Go to Deductions & Credits.  Select Traditional and Roth IRA Contributions. Even if you didn’t make a new contribution for the current year, walk through this section. Look for a screen titled "Any Nondeductible Contributions to your IRA?" and select Yes. This should eventually lead to the "Value of your Traditional IRA on December 31, 2025" screen. 3. Why Line 6 Might "Look" Wrong Line 6 represents the total value of all your non-Roth IRAs at the end of the year.  If you emptied your accounts: If you did a full conversion and had $0 left in your Traditional IRA on Dec 31, Line 6 should be 0. The Pro-Rata Rule: If you have other Traditional IRAs sitting elsewhere (like an old 401k rolled into an IRA), those must be included in the total value on Line 6, even if you didn't touch them this year.

Hello, When submitting my taxes, I receive the error: “On the form, the amount on line 68519 cannot exceed the amount on line 68518. Furthermore, the amount on line 68519 cannot exceed the sum of lines 10100, 10400, 12799, 12800, and 13000 of your T1 General.” I am using form T1198 to report retroactive retirement benefit income. The amounts on lines 68518 and 68519 are identical, however, the retroactive retirement benefit amount is included in box 11500, so the second validation is not working. Can you help me?

I am trying to file federal and state taxes electronically and Turbo Tax asks to update the software before filing.  When I've chosen "Update Software", a window opens and says "Waiting for the installer service".  After waiting 15 minutes, I canceled.  Since the software update was unable to happen, I am unable to file my taxes electronically.  How do I get past this software update issue?  The software I'm using is 2025 Turbo Tax Premier Desktop/PC.
