During the import of my 1099 investment sales transactions, those investments with "S&P" in the name had the name replaced by the letter "P".  Why isn't the "&" allowed?   See the turbotax message below: ! Avoid using symbols like ', ", &, <, and >. Example:  20 shares of XYZ company.   Is the above limitation/restriction clearly communicated to the financial businesses that produce the 1099 sales transactions?     Thanks for the Help. Gary
Thanks.  Downloading the form from the state site was my backup plan.  Thanks again for the confirmation!

Income reported on Form 1099-NEC is entered as part of Schedule C Business Income and Expenses because you are considered to be self-employed by the company who paid you.  If you already have a Schedule C in your return, then you can enter the Form 1099-NEC under the Income section of the Schedule C.     Otherwise, use the information in the following TurboTax help article to get started:   What is a 1099-NEC?   Then, after the Form 1099-NEC has been entered, you will be asked questions about what type of work you did to earn the money.  This will help you get started entering the information for your Schedule C Business Income and Expenses that goes along with the Form 1099-NEC.

My mom passed in 2008 granting a life estate to her second husband at the time (not my father who was her first marriage).  The house (Washington State) was deeded to myself and my siblings.  My step father just passed after 18 years in residence.  We are going to sell the house quickly.  My question is in regards to taxes.  I thought the house would step up in basis to value at time of my mom's death.  If we sell now, the capital gains taxes would be based on difference in today's value and 2008 value (FMV).  It does seem strange that we would have to pay capital gains on an asset we did not control nor could get income on for the past 18 years.  So my questions are as follows: 1)  Is the capital gains based on 2008 FMV or possibly on Life Tennant passing since we did not have control of asset? 2)  If it is based on 2008 FMV, what is the best way to determine that value.  I have the property tax estimate as well as a real estate comp. that I had completed in 2008.  What is typically best method? Thanks Glenn

The FTB is the only source that can answer exactly why they change the refund.  It could be due to an offset (such as a debt owed) or a credit they disallowed, or something else.     The FTB is required to send you a letter (usually Notice FTB 5818) explaining why they changed your refund.    If you don't want to wait for the letter, you can contact the FTB. Since tax season is very busy, it is easier to send a message rather than call them. If you don't have one, create a MyFTB account. Once logged in, you can send a secure message. They usually respond within a few business days.

Thanks for the question. Yes. No problem entering the correct information but if I change my daughter’s age to be less than 18 then the information gets transferred to Schedule 5. If I change the age back to over 18, it doesn’t work.  BTW, I checked TurboTax 2024 and the same thing happens.

If the tuition was paid to the  school, in 2025, you can and should claim the AOTC on your 2025 tax return, counting only the amount over $5250.  For AOTC purpose, it doesn't matter that you were not reimbursed until 2026 because tuition was actually paid, on your behalf, in 2025.
