I used a 529 and had qualified distributions. I'm getting dinged because I'm only seeing a place to put in the 1098-T (tuition) expenses, not rent for the off-campus living.

Thank you for the IP PIN excellent information! I was in the group where wrong PIN's were assigned so I now have a new updated IP PIN from my account on the IRS website. Next Challenge: How do I get the rejected e-filed return refiled with the corrected IP PIN? Do I just go through the e-filing process again as though the rejected return no longer exists?

@debracuaz asked: "1099 NEC reporting asks for "Box 6-State Number" - What is the State Number for Texas" By the term "reporting" does that mean you are entering a 1099-NEC for income you received in Texas? TX does not have a state income tax. You don't need to mention TX. Are Boxes 5,6, and 7 blank?

I received an oil lease bonus for property that I own. What is the correct source of income to use? There have been no royalties paid so far, I do own the mineral rights.

Hello, I'm helping my mother fill out her taxes. She was the beneficiary of my father's investment account, and ownership was transferred to her (with a new account created by the brokerage) after his passing years ago. He had ESPPs and RSUs from a company he worked for, and it had liquidated this past year, so all stocks were sold without my mother taking any action. The brokerage has not provided any supplemental information. From this thread, I'm inclined to have her use the FMV of the date he passed as the actual cost basis, but I'm not sure considering she was the beneficiary of the account and they had always filed taxes jointly. Not sure if it helps, but given the date of his passing was more than 2 years ago, TurboTax has recommended that she file as single rather than as surviving spouse. Many thanks for helping us in this stressful time!

Odd. I've gone through those exact steps. When I arrive at the rollover question for my spouse, this is what I see: Did [spouse name] roll over all of this $7,000 (Box 1) to another retirement account? Let us know if you rolled over all or a portion of this distribution by depositing it in another retirement account (or returning it the same one) within the rollover time limits. 1) Yes, [spouse name] rolled over $7,000 to another traditional IRA or retirement account (or returned it to the same account). 2) No, [spouse name] rolled over less than $7,000. 3) I did something else On the other hand, I see the following options for me when I arrive at the rollover question: 1) I rolled over some or all of it to an IRA or other retirement account within the time limits (normally 60 days) 2) I converted some or all of it to a Roth IRA 3) I did a combination of rolling over and converting some or all of this money 4) I didn't roll over or convert this money I selected option 2 for me (converted to Roth IRA) and option 3 (I did something else) for my spouse and that seemed to do the trick on our forms 8606. It's unclear why the explicit "I converted some or all of it to a Roth IRA" isn't available for my spouse.

@ GTSeattle See my comment above on where to enter the IP PIN. But also be aware of this: NOTE: If you received your IP PIN by IRS letter a few weeks ago, be aware that the IRS sent some early letters with wrong IP PINs in mailings prior to January 6. The IRS subsequently updated those incorrect IP PINS with new ones inside the online IRS account. So if your IP PIN rejects again (after you enter it in the correct location), it may be because of a letter prior to January 6 with the wrong IP PIN, and in that case check the IP PIN showing in your online IRS account.

@ GTSeattle wrote: Where can I input the IP PIN on my return filed by TurboTax desktop software? The Turbo Tax "signing pin" is only 5 digits and the IP PIN is six digits. Can I correct the rejected E-Filed return or do I have to now file by mail? You can correct it and resubmit the efile. The 6-digit IP PIN is not entered in the FILE section. It's an entirely different part of TurboTax. Here's how to navigate: Federal Taxes tab (exception: Personal tab in Home and Business) Subtab Other Tax Situations Scroll down to Other Return Info Choose topic Identity Protection PIN Addendum: Also see my next comment below which mentions that some early IRS letters (if that's how you received yours) had incorrect IP PINs and how to get the updated one, if applicable.
