If you want to make changes or add a document to a tax return that has already been filed and accepted by the taxing agency, you should follow these guidelines.    You must first wait until the initial return is completely processed. This means waiting until the payment submitted with the tax return has been processed, or your refund has been received.  You will have to use the same TurboTax account that you used for the original tax return.  Once you begin your amendment, you'll see your original return.   The refund calculator will start new at $0 and only reflect the changes in the refund or tax due  Only make changes to the areas of your return that need to be corrected. You have three years from the date you filed your return or two years after you paid the tax due (whichever is later) to file an amendment

It comes to me as a 1099-B Undetermined Term Transactions for Noncovered Tax Lots,  and shows as Proceeds Reported by Month, with additional information showing a Principal Payment Cost Basis Factor which changes by month.  How I've handled it in the past was just showing the Cost Basis of $0 for each monthly transaction.  I end up over paying my taxes, but it's better that than having an error that costs me more in time and fines.

You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it.  It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox on the corner.  The IRS does not allow you to take it back.   If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etc…DO NOT change your return while it is “pending.”  The changes will go nowhere.   Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return.  If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.    Sometimes—not always— the IRS corrects your mistakes, while they are processing your return.    If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund.  THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and e-file or mail  it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally.  You will need to use a form called a 1040X.     Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself.  Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed

TurboTax forces incorrect $0 value for CA Form 568 Schedule IW Line 3 for businesses submitting 'final ever return' - it should be $800. I am not able to manually override this. This leads to the calculation to suggest a $800 refund is due, which is incorrect. Will likely get flagged in FTB review? Business in question closed in November 2025, although this is not that relevant. Any advice appreciated.

Hi @SteamTrain  and @baldietax ,   I am using TurboTax Desktop for Windows.  I thought it would have shown up in the post. I had to repeatedly enter the platform every time I edited the post, so it might have reset on the last update.    Wow, that is a weird bug.  So basically instead of resetting that last option to Multiple states or a specific state when flipping back and forth, the Multiple states option does not get updated.    Thank you for the picture and explanations as it helps understand what was not changing with this bug.  I will try it out and report back.

Yes, you can enter the investment sale as follows:   You enter investment sales in the Wages and Income section of TurboTax, then Investment Income, then Stocks, cryptocurrency, Mutual Funds, Bonds, etc... Skip the section where it asks if you want to upload your tax documents. Choose  Other as the type of investment sold. On the screen that says Now enter one sale for (name of broker), enter the investment sale information requested. Choose Stock (non-employee) for the type of investment. Leave the proceeds box empty and enter the cost of the security in the box 1(e) entry.

Hi   Do I need to enter an adjustment when filing my CA state taxes or do I skip this question?  Box 16 is blank on my 1099-R and Box 1 has my yearly withdrawal amount. My distribution code is a 7 and I withheld state taxes on my withdrawal amount.  Doesn't TT already know my distribution amount is the same as my federal distribution amount?   Thanks

Yes. In the Minnesota part-year return, TurboTax will give you a screen where you allocate income to Minnesota manually.   When you reach the income allocation screen, you’ll see your federal income in one column and a blank MN column, enter only the amount earned while you lived or worked in Minnesota.         [Edited 3/16/26 | 3:35 pm PST]

The entry on line 7 of the Wages, Salary, and Tips worksheet includes a description/type and amount.  The AMOUNT gets transferred to form 1040 line 1h, but the DESCRIPTION/TYPE does not.  The form has a line for the description/type and states "Other earned income.  Enter type and amount."  Is this a software bug?
It's not allowing to continue before I fix this in my return.
