The only way to find out is to file your return as independent. If someone already claimed you then your return will reject. Although it can reject for other reasons too.

If SSDI is your only income, it is not taxable. If you have other income, SSDI may be partly taxable based on a formula. That hasn't changed. There is a deduction for over-65 that reduces the amount of tax seniors pay, but it was not exactly "no tax on social security", and it doesn't help under 65.

None of the payer detail is needed just call it what you want for Schedule B. 1099B you can input at summary level unless you have adjustments (wash sales/AMD/non-covered lots etc) those are better input at detailed level if not too many, or worst case send the details to IRS with Form 8453.

It's possible the IRS records don't match for this Payer. In your 1099-R entry, try using the Federal ID Number instead of the State ID Number in Box 15. Also check for any special characters in the Address entry (such as St. Mary rather than St Mary), commas, or number signs.

@kristinekelley wrote: The import is not working in Premier desktop version for Merrill Lynch. Online users are reporting that Merrill Lynch appears separately from Merrill and Merrill Edge. I don't know but I have copies of the 3 major DIY tax prep software packages (plus a pro package and access to a couple of others) and, with Home & Business have had no issues importing a number of Merrill accounts into Home & Business (Tax Act and HRB don't support Merrill import). Granted, these were all Merrill Edge accounts. I would suggest contacting Support at 1-800-446-8848 to see if they can resolve the issue.

In 2025, I was working for a Maryland company and living in Virginia, then moved and established residency in Texas for the last two months of the year. I worked 10 business days in Maryland in December and the rest remotely from Texas. My employer is in Maryland and reporting my last two months of wages to Maryland on my W2, but did not withhold taxes for Maryland. Do I have to file a Maryland non-resident return? Is there a de-minimis presence test or income test to pay taxes in Maryland? How do I handle this in Turbotax if needed. (This is odd because in prior years my W2 showed total annual wages in both MD and VA, and I was then fully covered by the states' mutual exemption; this year only a portion of my income is showing as MD wages, which I assume corresponds to the last 2 months of the year) Thanks for any insights!

Yes. I had the same issue. It was a $70 difference between what Turbotax reported as the tax and what NYS did. When I tried to calculate it manually, I ended up with a value in between. But I'll trust that NYS knows what it's doing - or at least has the authority to determine the correct amount. I've been going in circles on a different thread. Turbotax seems hellbent on sending me down rabbit holes rather than fixing what's clearly an error in the software. https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/state-taxes/discussion/re-i-received-a-notice-from-my-state-tax-dept-the-state-agi-matches-what-was-on-my-return-but-t/01/3831760#M186771

The problem is with "guaranteed" tips.
This is the IRS notices that discusses the law, the regulations, and the extra leeway that is given in 2025 because the change happened in the middle of the year and employers might not be prepared for this season.
https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-drop/n-25-69.pdf
If a restaurant operates where tipping is voluntary, but all tips are paid out as a tip share, that is allowable for the deduction (with the exception of mandatory tips for large parties -- that is something the employer must keep track of). Where your grandson is in a gray area is because the tips are "guaranteed" -- what exactly does that mean? Just thinking out loud, it might mean:
1. certain employees are guaranteed a dollar amount, and other employees get a split of what is left over. If this case, if there is a night of bad tips, does the back of the house crew get their guarantee and the wait staff get screwed?
2. all employees are guaranteed a dollar amount. In this case, if it is a good night, does the employer keep the extra? If it is a bad night, does the employer make up the difference?
A "guaranteed" tip sounds like a wage to me. I don't know why the employer would do it that way. I can't give you any more practical advice.
