@user17742261769    If you have the Desktop program you can do a What-If worksheet.   Go to Forms Mode, click Forms in the upper right or on the left for Mac. Then click Open Forms box in the top of the column on the left. Open the US listing of forms and towards the bottom find the What-if worksheet. It's right under Estimated Taxes.     Or try…Go into Forms View. Once there, at the top of the left column, click on the icon for "Open Form". A popup window will appear. In the text line, type the word "what" without quotes. You should see "what-if worksheet" appear as a selection choice. Double-click it to launch the form.

While completing the review of my state (IN) taxes, TurboTax informed me that it won't be able to file my state return due to duplicate values in some fields of my W2s, 1099-Rs, etc.  When I go to file though, it is still trying to charge me $59 for filing state.  How do I correct this?

Sorry DianeW777, but this is so lame compared to It'sDeductible it's not even funny.  TurboTax was SO benevolent to provide us with a FMV tool.  Hope it wasn't too taxing on the programmers.  In October I downloaded all my YTD donation data in all formats, thinking that since Intuit cut us off at the knees in the midst of the tax year (ridiculous, unimaginable!), and made such a point of instructing us to download the data, that surely you would provide a tool or utility to import that data in one of the formats offered come tax time.  Silly me!  I am some kind of stupid!  I should have known better!  So I just finished re-entering all the data that I had entered prior to October 21 - item by item, donation by donation, a total pain.  And I'm still trying to figure out the benefit of using your program when I also have to do some of the math offline.  Isn't that why TT exists?  To save us time and effort at tax time?  I guess not when $$$$ are at stake.  With each entry I became more and more angry.  So, even though H&R Block and the other providers don't have a similar tool I am leaving TT as soon as I finish my return because as I said in my initial post months ago, you guys have absolutely NO loyalty to your long-time customers and have proved it yet again this year.

I had a problem with the standard deduction too for the 2025 California CA 540 income tax return.  After inputting all my income and expenses, I completed federal and state reviews until no errors were detected.  However, I found that the CA 540 tax return showed NO deductions - not standard or itemized.  I did not have itemized deductions for federal, so the standard deduction should have been populated automatically.  But the software has some sort of bug because it had a $0 deduction.  I looked at prior posts with a similar topic and tried to address any inconsistencies that might be affecting the deduction, but found none.  Shouldn't the software have an error check that says "you have no deductions to taxable income - do you want to review? before allowing me to file my taxes?  I ended up having to manually override the deduction on Schedule CA line 30 to complete my return.  I wonder if the error has something to do with the new tax law this year that removes tips and overtime premium from federal income tax calculations, because that is the only difference between  my 2025 and 2024 tax returns.

TurboTax is generally not allowing the user to edit fields that show a number that was derived from a calculation. If that's what's preventing you from making changes, go back to interview mode and review your answers. It may be that the number of days in each state is off, or that you need to designate which income was earned in which state.  Different states may also have different methods of allocating income.    Also, you may want to review your answers in the My Info / Personal Info section to be sure you have entered the correct dates you were a resident in each state, and to be sure you didn't double-count any days.   Finally, you should generally prepare the nonresident state first and the resident state (where you lived at the end of the year) last so that TurboTax can calculate any credit on your resident return for taxes paid to the previous state.   See this TurboTax tips article for more information about figuring your taxes when you work or live in more than one state.   See this TurboTax help article for information to contact each state's Department of Revenue for each state's guidelines.

Generally speaking, state deductions do often differ from federal because state laws allow different deductions or higher limits on items such as state income tax, which is limited on federal returns. But not knowing your state and whether you took the itemized deduction or standard deduction on your Federal return makes it difficult to say where the difference lies.   Check if your state allows itemizing even if you take the federal standard deduction and vice versa. Some states do not allow you to take a different deduction on your state return than you did on your federal tax return. For example if you took the standard deduction on your Federal tax return, you must also take it on your state tax return. For example if your state allows you to itemize your deductions while taking the standard deduction on your federal tax return, this can cause a higher total deduction on your state return.    Review your state-specific deductions, those that don't apply federally. For example you can no longer take a deduction on your federal tax return for unreimbursed employee expenses (like union dues or uniforms), but some states still allow for this deduction.   Some states, such as New York and Nebraska do not use the federal standard deduction amount.  If you have additional information (such as your state) or questions regarding this, please return to Community and we would be glad to help.

@kcarterco did you try right clicking on the "Gross Income from all Soiurces WorkSheet" to trace how both Line A and Line B are determined  by the software? That would prove the programming bug (or determine whether the source of the issue is elsewhere).  That worksheet is just below Line 3D on Form 1116......   looks like you may be able to adjust your findings on Line B without paper filing.

If you can’t find another computer you can install it on you can switch to the Online version.   You can transfer from 2024 Desktop tax return into the Online version.   So be sure to have the .tax2024 file on your computer.      TurboTax Desktop to Online Migration Offer Terms (Tax Year 2025) TurboTax Desktop to Online Migration Offer Terms (Tax Year 2025)   Here's some info about using the Online version. If you used the Desktop program before you may notice several differences and not like the online version. It has less features and no Forms Mode. The Online versions don't have all the same forms so you might have to upgrade to a higher Online version. You can only do 1 return per account. Your return is only saved online so be sure to save both the .tax2025 data file and the pdf file to your computer when you are done. In case you need to amend in the future or if you need a copy to get a loan or something. You might not be able to access your online return when you need a copy.
