When you enter a 1099-S, the entire gross proceeds of the sale will be taxable income until you provide the cost of the home and details that may qualify you for the sale for the primary residence exclusion. It sounds like you are just missing the primary residence exclusion, but double check you have included all your costs in case you do not qualify for the exclusion
Go back into the "Sale of Main Home" section.
Enter the sales expenses, such as commissions, transfer taxes, etc.
Enter the date you bought the house
Enter the cost basis of the home, which is the original cost plus permanent improvements
Finally, and most importantly, you must confirm the time you lived in the home by answering the question Did you live in the home for at least 24 months since [date of sale] on the screen Time lived in the home. If you owned and used the property as your primary residence for at least two out of the five years prior to the sale, your total gain of only $75,000 (well below the $250,000 exclusion for individuals or $500,000 for married couples) will not be taxable. If you did not use the home as a primary residence, then an increase in tax of around $26,000 may be correct, especially if you owned the home less than one year and are being taxed at short-term rates.

When you amend a tax return, it's a little different than modifying your existing return that you filed. The amendment process creates a Form 1040-X. This Form 1040-X adjusts your original figures. You will be prompted to change your existing return data, and TurboTax will will keep track of the changes and calculate the difference in the form of a refund or tax due.
After you hit the button to amend your tax return, follow the TurboTax prompts to correctly amend your tax return.
These changes to your federal tax return should automatically transfer to your state return. Depending on your circumstances, you may need to file a separate state amendment.
Choose the option to amend a filed return. This will allow you to update only the specific numbers that have changed.
Then your software will generate a Form 1040-X. This form will show a comparison of your original numbers and the corrected numbers.
Make sure to use the same TurboTax account on which you completed your initial tax return.
You can e-file an amended return for the current year. Prior years amended returns will have to be printed and mailed. If you have to file by mail: How do I file my return by mail?
Amended returns can take 8–16 weeks to process.
You can use the IRS tool, Where's my Amended Return" to check on your amended returns status however it takes about 3 to 4 weeks to show up on this system. Click here for additional information regarding filing an amended return.
Click here for additional information about e-filing your Form 1040-X.

If you have additional information or questions regarding this, please return to Community and we would be glad to help.

Thank you for your response! I only owed for my 2025 taxes and did not receive a refund. It looks like my payment for what I owed on my tax returns was also processed.

I am able to select Deductions & Credits down the left side of the screen. I see the screen Got it. Let's get some more info about these additional tax breaks.
I am able to scroll to the bottom of the screen and select Continue in the lower right hand corner of the screen. I am able to Review without incident.
See this TurboTax Help.

No. She does not have to file as self-employed. To claim this Form 1099-NEC that was not for self-employment, you should do the following:
Enter the total from Box 1 of the Form 1099-NEC as follows:
Go to Income, but skip the 1099-NEC section
Instead, scroll down to the bottom of the list where you will see "Less Common Income"
Click the down arrow to show the options and select, Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C
Scroll down to the bottom of the options and select, Other reportable income, Start
Any other taxable income?, Yes
Select + Add, and enter the description (e.g. 1099-NEC summer internship stipend), Continue
In this way, you will be reporting the Form 1099-NEC, but not as self-employment income.

@ shalomb As you're seeing, the 5-digit signing PIN is not related to the 6-digit IP PIN (Identity Protection PIN) which is entered in a different place in the interview. The 5-digit PIN is how you "sign" your return, and you are correct that it can transfer in from last year's data file when available. If you don't have it, it's no problem. It's entered on a screen with your birth date and today's date. The signing screen says to "enter any 5 digits of your choice" except can't be all zeros. So one can even use a new 5-digit signing PIN every year if desired. A lot of people don't save it from year to year, or switch computers, product platforms, etc., but can easily make a new one. By the way, if you are using the desktop Home and Business Edition, it differs a little from the other desktop products. In the Home and Business product, to get to the IP PIN entry, one would first go to the Personal tab, then to subtab Other Tax Situations, and scroll down to Other Return Info. In the other desktop products, one starts with the Federal Taxes tab. If you still can't find it, I can post an image, but would need to know if you are using desktop TurboTax or Online TurboTax. And if desktop TurboTax, if it's Home and Business or one of the other editions.

Submitted 2 different 1041/541 trusts returns with very similar income, deductions, taxes paid. California accepted. Federals rejected. E-file status states that rejection is due to a software problem with TurboTax Business. Appear to be associated with form 1116 with relatively small (less than 10% of total income) foreign qualified dividends. Problem to be fixed in future release. Will I be informed when fix will be available so that I can e-file federals? Latest release does not provide the fix

This has been the message for weeks now. I cannot complete my return without entering the 1099-Q data I have received. When will this subject be open fpor use?

Designating a property or properties as a real estate enterprise does not affect whether or not losses are realized or suspended. Rather it is a safe harbor for QBI purposes. As mentioned above, since you have ten properties, you may have net income from the others that is being used to offset the loss. In addition, if may have sold a property that resulted in allowing suspended losses. I suggest you review your Form 8582 (Passive Activity Loss Limitations). Activity on that form should explain what it transpiring with your real estate loss.

My filing status is Married Filing Jointly for Federal Tax Purposes. We have a home in Indiana, where I consider myself a resident (what I stated on the Federal form). However, the majority of my time is spent in Illinois (Chicago), where I have an apartment and work full-time. Am I considered a Non-Resident or Part-Year Resident? I just started to do my Illinois state return and am confused by the question "Did you make money in Illinois in 2025 but never live there?" Technically, no, because I did "live" there. Not sure then whether to answer Yes or No.

If you like, in order for us to troubleshoot this issue, you can send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information. If you would like to do this, here are the instructions for TurboTax Desktop users:
From the black bar at the top of your screen, select Online
Click Send Tax File to Agent
Click Send on the message that pops up
TurboTax will create a "sanitized" copy of your return information with no personal info
Post the full token number here in this thread
Here are the instructions for TurboTax Online users:
Go to the black panel on the left side of your program and select Tax Tools.
Then select Tools below Tax Tools.
A window will pop up which says Tools Center.
On this screen, select Share my file with Agent.
You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is. Click okay through this screen and then you will get a Token number.
Reply to this thread with your Token number. This will allow us to open a copy of your return without seeing any personal information.
We will then be able to review your file to see what you are seeing, and we can determine what is going on in your return and provide you with a suggested resolution.

Thanks for your detailed reply. With that in mind, there doesn't appear to be any reason why I shouldn't get a $2000 energy-saving improvement tax credit after having completed the form and double-checked my work. However, the TurboTax form says that I am not eligible for any tax credit. Unfortunately, it doesn't list a reason why and I've been unable to determine the reason myself. I'm reluctant to pay a TurboTax "expert" to figure out an answer. I tried using the Chat function to find an answer but it was useless.
