I'm ready to file but TT is showing husband's 401k Direct Rollover to Rollover IRA as Income.  It's on Line 5 and shows ROLLOVER but now total MAGI income exceeds IRMAA Thresholds and he is on Medicare.  I'm tempted to check the IRA box even though it's not checked just so that it doesn't impact IRMAA.  Help?   Thanks in advance

So I filed with TurboTax because it was free went through the whole process got to the end where he had the file found out they were charging me $138.28. This point I contacted customer service explain to him the situation that I didn't have the money to pay for this and I wasn't going to file with them because it was supposed to be free was informed by the representative that I should choose the pay with my refund option and once I get my refund contact them back and I will get my fees and stuff refunded in full so long story short I received my refund called back filled out the refund request form never got a call back or email called them back again Saturday spoke to a representative she told me that my whole hundred and $133.28 was approved back to my account where my refund was issued and issued gave me a confirmation number so this morning when it wasn't in my bank account I contacted TurboTax back and spoke to another representative who ultimately said yes have you received my $133.28 refund but it's going to take two to three weeks I then proceeded to ask for a supervisor waiting on hold a little longer got a supervisor only to be told that I was lying to again for a third time because I wasn't getting my refund back into the account I got my tax return they were sending me a check and for two I wasn't receiving $133.28 I was only receiving $93.28 due to the fact that the $40 fee to use my return to pay for the fees is through a third party Bank and as I proceeded to explain that I would have never got charged a $40 fee if I wasn't informed incorrectly by a representative prior to filing she proceeded to tell me that do what I got to do about it there's nothing she could do about it because they didn't charge me that okay they didn't charge me that but they are responsible because it was their representative who gave me the wrongful information that caused that charge to occur so they are fully responsible for this $40 payment that they're refusing to give me so they either refund me my money or I will contact the Federal trade commission for wrongful practices and I will contact the lawyer as well I don't care if it's only $40 cuz who else are you guys doing this to is the question so everybody out there reading this be aware and make sure you talk to multiple Representatives because they seem to like to lie a lot here at TurboTax and think it's okay when you're dealing with federal income taxes you're going to lie to me this is unprofessional and you guys should be shut down for it

Everyone's tax situation is different and the complexity of your tax situation, meaning the forms needed to file your return, determines if you qualify for the TurboTax Free Edition.   The TurboTax Free Edition is strictly limited to simple Form 1040 returns. If your return requires additional schedules to report specific types of income or to claim certain credits, the system will prompt you to upgrade to TurboTax Deluxe or higher.   Here are the most common reasons you would be required to upgrade to a paid version: Unemployment Income: If you received a 1099-G for unemployment benefits, this is no longer covered under the Free Edition for the 2025 tax year. Itemized Deductions: If you are claiming deductions for mortgage interest, property taxes, or large charitable contributions on Schedule A instead of taking the standard deduction. Investment Income: Reporting stock sales, cryptocurrency transactions, or rental property income. Self-Employment/Gig Work: If you have 1099-NEC or 1099-K income and need to deduct business expenses on Schedule C. Education Credits: Claiming the American Opportunity Tax Credit or Lifetime Learning Credit (Form 8863). To see if you have forms that are not included in the free edition: Sign in to your TurboTax Online account. Select Tax Tools from the left menu and then click Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Look for Schedules 1, 2, or 3. If any of these are present (other than for the Student Loan Interest deduction or the EITC/Child Tax Credit), an upgrade is required. If you want to start over to remove an accidental entry:  Select Tax Tools  Clear and Start Over  This will erase all data entered so far Student Loan Interest (Form 1098-E) is technically an "Adjustment to Income" (an Above-the-Line deduction). While it is a common and simple form, TurboTax's commercial "Free Edition" is restricted to Form 1040 only with no additional schedules.   Even though you are taking the Standard Deduction, Student Loan Interest is reported on Schedule 1. As soon as the software detects a need for Schedule 1 (for student loans, unemployment, or self-employment), it triggers an upgrade to Deluxe.   As long as you haven't done the upgrade, you can go back to the question, "Did you pay student loan interest?", and say no, you will not need Schedule 1. The software won't prompt you to upgrade—but you will lose that deduction.
I posted a reply immediately but it seems not to have gone through. I challenged copilot a1 and they agreed that they were wrong. Thx

"Direct federal income" ties out to the 2025 published US Government percentage for Vanguard funds.  The "Indirect federal income" appears to be for FNMA, GNMA, FHLMC etc that are not exempt from state income tax as US government interest.  So only pick up the "Direct federal income" as an adjustment for state income tax returns.

Do you owe at least $2,000 in income taxes?  The credit can only be used to reduce your income taxes in the year in which you purchase the stove.  If you don't owe at least $2,000 then the only thing that the credit can do is reduce your income tax bill to zero dollars.   Look at your form 1040 on line 16.  Whatever the amount on that line is that is the maximum that your credit can be (up to $2,000).  If the amount on line 16 is less than $2,000 then that is all of the credit that you are entitled to.
Thanks Dave, for the detailed explanation. That makes a lot of sense to me now. Appreciated.

Yes, you must add this when mailing or e-file your return, then use a Form 1040-X with no changes and include Form 8594. Either way is acceptable once you know what to use on your 2025 tax return.  It's your decision if you prefer to mail your complete return.   Please tell us exactly what you are paying for, i.e., every asset being purchased, then we can provide the exact location to put the information in your tax return.  A cost of purchasing a business includes many assets and both you and the seller must agree on how the purchase price is divided among the assets. This is the purpose for Form 8954.   Some examples were provided and shown here for convenience. Until we know exactly what your are purchasing, we can't advise where to enter your costs. Goodwill - Section 197 Intangible- Acquired goodwill is amortized straight-line over 15 years Equipment - 7 or 5 year property as a rule Building - Depreciated over 39 years (nonresidential real estate) Once we have more details we can further assist you with your return.   @kentchidester

Yes, what is the code is Box 7, and is the IRA/SIMPLE/SEP box checked?   If you are over 70.5, you should get the prompt.     How do I enter Qualified Charitable Distributions?  @kcgongaware    A qualified charitable distribution, or QCD, is a distribution of funds from your IRA (other than an active SEP or SIMPLE IRA) directly by the trustee to a qualified charitable organization. The charity must be a 501(c)(3) organization and eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions.   To report a QCD, you’ll use a 1099-R form. While entering your 1099-R in TurboTax, be sure to select the correct box 7 distribution code. You’ll then be prompted to confirm the amount donated.    TurboTax includes the full amount of the distribution reported on your Form 1099-R on line 4a (IRA Distributions) of your Form 1040 or 1040-SR. The taxable amount reported on Line 4b will be the total distribution less the QCD amount and will have "QCD" entered next to it.   QCD Rules

The scholarship was reported on your account in November so I would expect to see it in box 5 of your 1098-T. Expenses paid in Dec for the next 3 months can be included in your 2025 expenses. If your box 5 is greater than box 1, you will want to enter the amount on the screen titled aid included amounts not for 2025 so you can carry the scholarship income to next year. You will need to make a note of this for next year's taxes.
