Thanks John, since I am itemizing deductions, I pay tax on the $600 because I cannot include it as an itemized deduction and already removed by SSA-1099 process, but the $800 will be not taxed because it can be included as an itemized deduction? Both were a medicare reimbursement allowance but only one made it to my SS deductions, the Humana $600. The Federal employees BCBS $800 would have been paid monthly but went as a one-time payment to my checking account since I filed for it in November 2025. Seems like they both were just a lowering of the monthly insurance premiums. Just Checking. Thanks Joe

You need to enter the 1098-T first and then the Q. We had a problem with entering room and board but it is corrected. You will enter it in the education expenses section while doing the 1098-T.
If your entire 1099-Q was used on eligible expenses then it is not recommended you enter the form. Instead, keep the form and matching expenses in your tax folder.
IRS Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Education states that nontaxable distributions should not be entered.

And for the amounts and forms..... Go by the actual 1040X. Line 18 should be your original refund amount and line 22 should be your additional refund. If you paid on your original return it will be on line 16. If there is an amount owed with the amendment, it will be on line 20. Ignore any 1040V voucher that prints out and the new 1040. Those are what your return would have been if you had not needed to amend.

You can deduct the sales tax on major purchases even if they were not purchased in your resident state, however the amount will be limited to your local tax rate (so if the sales tax was higher in the state you purchased the car from, your deduction is limited to your local rate.)
In TurboTax under Federal Taxes, Deductions & Credits, look for Sales Tax under Estimates and Other Taxes Paid.
On the screen Sales tax deduction, choose if you want to use the IRS estimated (you will still be able to add the car purchase sale tax) or Actual.
The next screen you Add any places you lived
You will see where you can add Major Purchases- and you will be able to enter the information here.
TurboTax will calculate the deduction.

Your website FAQ says that for 2025 tax year, I can still get my refund via check from the Treasury. My wife and I each (though we filed jointly) received letters saying that we MUST provide bank routing information in order to receive our refund. I presume that your website is wrong and has not yet been corrected. Do both my wife and I need to respond to the IRS letters or just one of us?

When you re entered your info again did you use the original info from 2024? Why are you amending? You needed to recreate the new 1040 return to match the original 1040 you actually filed. So the amended return should show changes. And did you use the 2024 program? To amend a return you did somewhere else or you don't have the original .tax file, you would first have to fill out Turbo Tax like you are doing the original return and pay for it. You have to recreate the actual wrong original return. Then when it matches each line that you really filed you have to tell Turbo Tax you will mail it so it thinks it was filed. Then you can amend it. If you didn't use the Online version or don't have the .tax2024 file you would need to use the 2024 Desktop program to recreate the 2024 original return. If you don't have the Desktop program or can't reinstall it, you would have to buy the prior year Desktop program here. They only sell the last 3 years. You need a full Windows or Mac computer to install it on https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products

I recently filed successfully through the web version and just got my federal return, but it was less the amount of the Residential Energy Tax Credit I was owed. I looked at my return and on form 5695 lines 17 a, b, and c are all checked "no" despite my not being asked those specific questions anywhere in the flow. If you select no for any of them you're not eligible. Had I been asked those questions they would have all gotten a strong "yes." When I filed it didn't go through initially b/c of an error and the error code referenced form 5695. I checked these forums and saw that there was issue that was to be fixed on 3/6. I waited until 3/6 and tried again and it went through. So I assumed everything was working. I called support yesterday and spent quite a bit of time trying to explain this only to be told that I should print out my return and mail it in as an amendment. TL;DR: form 5695 still seems to be broken; I paid for this service; I did what I'm supposed to do and now got less of a return; and the solution is to print it out and submit again?

Yes, you can group the items as you have done. Note that in the heading of Section A, the form states that you can list "an item (or a group of similar items) for which you claimed a deduction of $5,000 or less". It is not necessary to list each individual item on the form. You are expected to have maintained records to support the totals reported on Form 8283. The IRS rules have not changed. See the IRS Instructions for Form 8283 for more information.
If you donated, for example, several bags of clothing on a particular date, you can list "clothing" on Form 8283 and one total for all of the items. If you donated an assortment of household items, you can list "household items" with one total.
See also this TurboTax help article for information about the new fair market valuation (FMV) tool that helps you price your charitable donations if you’re itemizing your deductions.

The issue is TTax says it can in it's prompts. & then it fails. Causing a complete re-entering of carryover data. Previous years transferred the pdf data. Further - no warning or advice to save as the tax type file is givin within program processing. So having to change over to Win 11 has caused this ' glitch' & I'm disappointed...excuse the whining but this isn't acceptable. Future loyalty may be a challenge.

Follow these steps:
You must get the 1099-G: Go to the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance website and look for the "Get Form 1099-G" link under the Individuals section.
Once you have your form, you can enter it and be sure to mark for 2023.
As you continue, you will see the question: “Does either apply to your 2023 New York return?” select: NO - the NY inflation refund is not a normal tax refund, and choosing NO forces TurboTax to include it in federal income while subtracting it from New York tax.
TurboTax will then ask: “Tell us the taxable amount of your refund” Enter your refund amount.
The income is included on your federal but should not be taxed by either state.

TurboTax also created a new 1040 with the new numbers. Does this sound right? What forms are transmitted via TurboTax to the IRS? The new 1040 and 1040X and new State forms?

You are referring to a Qualified Charitable Contribution (QCD).
While entering your form 1099-R, if you have entered a birth date which makes you older than 70 1/2 in the tax year, TurboTax will ask you if any portion of your distribution was transferred to charity. Answer Yes to that question and you can then enter the amount transferred to charity.
The code in box 7 of form 1099-R must be 7 and the box IRA/SEP/SIMPLE must be checked.
TurboTax will then reduce the taxable amount by the amount transferred to charity.

Did you make a QCD from your IRA? Are you over 70 1/2? If you are over 70 1/2 then after you enter the 1099R keep going. In my Desktop program one of the next screens will say…Do any of these situations apply to you with a list. The 7th item is "I transferred all or part of this money directly to charity". Check that and the next screen will be either for RMD info or ask how much was transferred to Charity. Just keep going though all the screens. For a QCD, check 1040 line 4b. It should be 0 (unless you have other taxable 1099Rs) and the QCD box checked. The code in box 7 of form 1099-R must be 7 and the box IRA/SEP/SIMPLE must be checked. You can’t do a QCD from a 401K. For QCD there is a new checkbox on the 1040 line 4. 4a is the amount of the IRA distribution. 4b is the taxable amount. 4c has 3 checkboxes. Checkbox 2 is for QCD

If you requested to have the TurboTax account fees deducted from your federal tax refund, the IRS will send the refund to a third party processor to have the fees and the $40 service charge deducted. The third party processor will deduct the TurboTax fees plus the $40 service charge and then attempt to direct deposit the remaining refund balance into the account that you entered on your tax return.
For the status of your tax refund you will need to contact the third party processor, Santa Barbara Tax Product Group, using their website - https://www.sbtpg.com/

The issue with Form 8283 is under investigation with no estimated date for resolution. In the meantime, prepare a statement using a "Miscellaneous Statement" in TurboTax Business explaining that you have no charitable contributions to declare but the software required a form. Save the form as a PDF and attach it when prompted for the 8283. You can create this form using Forms Mode and search for the name (it is a blank form for you to fill out).
Note that if you didn't request an extension of time to file by the March 16, 2026, deadline for 2025 Form 1065, you won't be able to file one after that date.
We're still reviewing the Form 1041 diagnostic copy and will respond as soon as we're able.
