To "Amend" your Federal return is to file a Form 1040X to make changes to it.    Before you can file an amended return, the original return will need to have been processed by the IRS (refund issued / payment processed). Also, Form 1040-X for filing an amendment won't be available in TurboTax until February 18, 2026. See here for more information on forms availability.   See here for more information on preparing an amended return with TurboTax.   There are times when you should amend your return and times when you shouldn't. Here are some common situations that call for an amendment:   You realized you missed out on claiming a tax deduction or credit. You accidentally claimed the wrong tax filing status. You need to add or remove a dependent. You forgot to claim taxable income on your tax return. You realize you claimed an expense, deduction, or credit that you weren't eligible to claim.   See this article for more information on filing an amended return. @etkelly95

It is automatic based on your age. It is not part of your Standard Deduction. The new Senior Deduction is separate and in addition to the Standard Deduction or your Itemized Deductions on 1040 line 12e. The 6,000/12,000 senior deduction will be calculated on 1040 Schedule 1-A page 2 Part V Enhanced Deduction for Seniors which goes to 1040 line 13b with any other sch 1-A amounts. Turbo Tax automatically includes it if you qualify. If you are married you have to file a Joint return.

Here are the answers to your questions:   Line B- you mentioned he does research, I would suggest using code 541720 for research and development in the social sciences and humanities.  Code 712100 would be for the actual museum.   Line C- leave the name blank Line D- do not enter an EIN (this would be the EIN for your son) Line F- select cash for the accounting method Line G- Yes, he materially participated Line H- yes skip the startup costs Instructions for Schedule C   Reach out if you have any other questions.     @Cat_Sushi
If there is a known glitch in TT regarding the entry of expenses as offsets against 529 plan disbursements, how will we know when it has been fixed so that we can complete our taxes.

You will have to wait for the IRS to either Accept or Reject your filed federal tax return. If the return is rejected you can make the necessary changes and e-file again. If the return is accepted you will have to amend your original tax return. An amended return, Form 1040-X, can only be printed and mailed to the IRS if the original tax return was not e-filed. The IRS will take up to 20 weeks or longer to process an amended tax return. Before starting to amend the tax return, wait for the tax refund to be received or the taxes due to be paid and processed by the IRS. See this TurboTax support FAQ for amending a current year tax return - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-return/amend-federal-tax-return-current-year/L7eS6o1qh_US_en_US?uid=lfunevhk

The bottom line here is that the documentation provided by TurboTax does not reflect the flow seen in the current version of the TurboTax software.  There is no way to upload a CSV as indicated in the support article titled "How do I upload a CSV file of my crypto transactions?" (Updated 1/28/2026) here: https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/cryptocurrency/upload-csv-file-crypto-transactions/L4EaIsWGG_US_en_US And there is also no "Cryptocurrency" in the current flow indicated either:  On the Let's import your tax info screen, select Enter a different way, Cryptocurrency, and then Continue.   The post initial wizard flow allows for this:  Wages & Income Expand Investments and Savings Stocks, Cryptocurrency, Mutual Funds, Bonds, Other (1099-B, 1099-DA) Click Start / Revisit etc Enter a Different Way Upload from Device File uploads restricted to pdf, jpeg, jpg or png. Even using the Crypto CSV Upload from the "Save time and connect your financial accounts" > Connect selection results in the same file type upload restrictions. If you are an Expert replying to this, please don't quote these TurboTax articles as they're clearly outdated / inaccurate. @JamesG1 @MarilynG1  FWIW, I converted my unchanged Coinbase transactions CSV download to PDF for upload to TurboTax and it failed.

It is not unusual for your return to stay in pending status for several days sometimes longer depending on the back log of returns filed and time it takes for the IRS to process them. Currently, many users are filing tax returns leading to the long time in pending.   Keep checking the IRS Where’s My Refund? site for updates. The tool is updated daily (usually overnight) so you don’t need to check more often.    Please see the TurboTax FAQ What does "Pending" mean? for additional information.
