Are you possibly adding up all of your itemized deductions without taking into consideration that many itemized expenses have limits or thresholds based on your AGI? Because of IRS limitations, itemized deductions don't always add up dollar to dollar.
Medical expenses: only the portion of medical and dental that is great than 7.5% of your AGI is deductible.
State and Local Taxes (SALT): For 2025 and 2026, the maximum SALT deduction is $40,000 for MFJ, Single, and HOH ($20,000 for MFS).
Mortgage interest: this varies depending on when you took out the mortgage. But if it was after 2017, for MFJ, Single, and HOH, the debt limit is $750,000 ($375,000 MFS).
Charitable contributions: Generally, this is limited to 60% of AGI for cash gifts and 30% of AGI for non-cash donations.
How to check your itemized vs. standard deductions:
First, in TurboTax Online, double-check all entries in itemized deduction categories. Then, go to Tax Tools > Tools > View Tax Summary. This should give you a comparison between itemized and standard deductions, as well as your AGI.
If you still feel that the itemized deduction would be better, you can manually override. Go to the Deductions and Credits section. When you get to the screen that says, "Based on what you told us, the standard deduction is best for you", look for an option to "Change my deduction" and manually select itemized. Caution: This may result in a higher tax bill.
If you still feel there is an issue, contact TurboTax customer support to check for technical issues.

I received a letter from the IRS proposing the what I put on my tax return is different from what they received from third parties, like my employer and/or college. So I'm trying to figure out why they want me to pay $3,000. And this is the only thing I can figure.

Many federal and state forms are not yet available. Check here for form availability. The dates are subject to change.
Tax form availability tool
Be patient.
IF you e-file now, your return will go into “pending” until the IRS starts to accept/reject returns in late January. You cannot make any changes while the return is on the server. The IRS will start to accept/reject 2025 e-files on January 26. And….a state return cannot be accepted until after the IRS accepts your federal return.

Q. Am I still able to file for education credits for college if my employer did not reimburse the full $5250 (tax free)?
A. Yes. But, you may only count the tuition paid that was not reimbursed by tax free money, even if the reimbursement was paid in the following year ("I was not refunded for the $6000 spring semester").
By law your employer can only give you $5250 maximum, tax free. . If you got more than $5250, the amount above $5250 is usually already included in box 1 of your W-2 as taxable income. Most students only need $4000 of qualifying expenses to claim the maximum credit.
That brings up the question of why you are just now filing a 2023 return. There's a new urban myth among college students that says they can get a $1000 from the government just for filing a tax form. For most of them, they simply aren't eligible. A full time unmarried student, under age 24, even if you don't qualify as a dependent, is only eligible for the refundable portion of the American Opportunity Credit if he supports himself by working. You cannot be supporting yourself on parental support, 529 plans or student loans & grants. It is usually best if the parent claims that credit.

I have to add my "thank you" to Intuit for forcing me out of their product. Used TT for about 4 decades and paid them buckets of money, but this time I'm not going to put in the effort to correct their asinine direction of forcing another hardware and software cost on my to support their direction. I've successfully used TT 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 on Win 7 using tools in GITHUB and 2024 using MSIX. This time it is no longer worth the effort as deductable will also have to be somehow interfaced. This link gives alternatives "https://thecollegeinvestor.com/23914/turbotax-alternatives/" with Block being self hosted versus exposed to the cloud and appears to be available to Win 7 with some minor adjustments to the install but uses Win 10 with no modifications. I find it amazing that the claims are "for security" when in order to even log onto this thread I have to relax MY browser security. The belief that MS11 or MS10 is more secure is a fairy tale, These OS's just provide more information to providers and MS itself. Misconceptions may dispelled by use of this simple tool: https://stateofsurveillance.org/tools/fingerprint Meanwhile INTU I will not be assisting your balance sheet any longer.

Huh? What do you mean by "pdf for my W-2?" TurboTax does not have a pdf of your W-2. If you filed a past year tax return using TurboTax, then you can print a copy of your past year tax return. There will not be a copy or an image of your W-2 included with that.
And...if you are trying to get your 2025 W-2----that comes from your employer. TurboTax does not have your 2025 W-2. Your employer has until January 31 to issue your W-2.

You owe the state, because it is not possible to pay the state tax due from a federal refund. You misunderstood.
The “summary” given to you by TurboTax must have confused you. That summary just nets out the difference between a refund you are getting and an amount you owe. Or it adds two refunds or tax “due” amounts together.
The federal and state treasuries are completely separate from each other.
Your state tax due cannot be paid from a federal refund.
And….your federal tax due cannot be paid from a state refund.
Neither refund can be used to pay the amount due to the other one.
If you owe tax due, you have to pay it yourself by the filing deadline on April 15, 2025.
It is only possible to pay your TurboTax fees from your federal refund by using "refund processing"---a third party bank receives your federal refund, extracts your TT fees and sends the rest of the federal refund to you.
You have to pay your own state tax due by the state'e preferred method of payment, such as by mailing a check or money order or by using the state's own tax payment site.

That's an INCREDIBLY important distinction (and capability), and one that those of us who've always used the desktop version wouldn't know about. Thanks for pointing it out. That alone would be reason enough to move to a different product.
