Well, you are displaying the true colors and values of TurboTax. Sometimes doing the right thing means sacrificing a little $ on the bottom line. That’s why customers are so frustrated and angry over your leadership’s decision to discontinue Itsdeductible.😡

@simmoja72 wrote: Obviously you have a narrow company line perspective, and do not understand the gravity of this problem for the many real users of Itsdeductible…  Uh, no, it's a realistic and pragmatic perspective. Corporations, such as Intuit, have a duty, first to their shareholders and second to their customers. You may not like it but that's just axiomatic.    The duty, specifically, is to maximize shareholder value in an ethical and responsible manner. Discontinuing a product that consumes resources yet produces neither income nor a benefit is part and parcel of that duty.

The 2021 Desktop program is still available until they close 2024 and put 2024 in the past year products around mid October.  Then 2021 will drop off.  So you better buy and download 2021 right away.  2023 Desktop program is also available.  You can't use the Online versions for 2023 or prior.     If your 2021 return rejected you can download the .tax2021 data file from Online and fix or finish it in the Desktop program.    Why did it reject?  It might not need fixing and you can just download the pdf and mail it without needing the 2021 Desktop program.    How to finish a return you started online https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/prior-year-return/help/how-do-i-finish-a-prior-year-return-that-i-started-in-turbotax-online/01/26322 If you can't get the side menus to open up to access the prior year..... You need to start entering some basic Personal Info in 2024 for the side menu to open up. Just continue a little ways into 2024.

Even though I paid for the audit protection. Stupid move for them since they’ll deal with this totally if I get audited

Regardless, my suggestion is still to buy your regular version of TurboTax, directly from Intuit, and try to install and run the software. If it does not work, you can always get a refund under their 60-day satisfaction guarantee.   After that, you could then buy the H&R Block (or TaxAct) software and see if that works.

Thanks, yes, "mixed bag" is consistent with the online queries I've done so far, and "not as user-friendly" is also consistent. Assuming H&R Block software will be Win10 ESU compatible, it is still more attractive than replacing our otherwise fully capable and "dialed-in" PCs. I hope that Intuit will reconsider its stated policy in light of the Microsoft ESU program...

there is no NOL election specifically for real estate. Since the losses were passive (you're not a real estate professional) the amount allowed/disallowed each year would be computed on form 8582. It's automatic so you need to review those forms for the past years because if your Modified adjusted gross income was low enough, some or all of those losses may have been allowed. disallowed amounts should have carried forward in Turbotax.  We do not know if you had true NOLs which would generally be if you adjusted gross income was negative.       the tax laws on NOLs varied over the years so it's not possible to assess your situation.  at one point true NOLs had to be carried back, if possible, unless an election was made to carry it forward. Starting in 2021 true NOL's could only be carried forward and thus no election was needed.

You cannot change the tax year.   The current online program is for 2024 only.   Only a 2024 return can be prepared online and only a 2024 return can be e-filed.   Online preparation and e-filing for 2021, 2022, and  2023 is permanently closed. Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.   To file a return for a prior tax year  If you need to prepare a return for 2021, 2022, or 2023  you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s) https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/ You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.   Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.   https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/state-taxes/contact-state-department-revenue/L9qVToi02_US_en_US?uid=m6e06um0   When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.   Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.         It is now too late to get a refund for a 2021 return unless you requested an extension for 2021 by the April filing deadline in 2022.   You can print, sign and mail your 2021 return.  It cannot be e-filed.   If you owe tax due for 2021, you still have to pay that and you will be billed for late filing and interest owed.        You will be able to access the 2021 return you started by using the exact same account and user ID that you used when you started it.   But you can no longer use online software for any further changes.       Start a 2024  return online and enter some personal information  so that the menu on the left opens up and lets you access your past year returns.   Online tax preparation and e-filing for 2021 returns is now permanently closed.    Now it is too late to use online software or to e-file. If you have any changes/corrections at all to make to your 2021 return, you now have to complete it using desktop software, which you must download to a full PC or Mac  (not to a mobile device). Then you need to print, sign and mail it.   https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/printers-printing/finish-prior-year-return-started-turbotax-online/L9Oe4M90A_US_en_US?uid=m68tffpe   If you already paid for your online software you can ask customer support for a download of the desktop software.   They are available from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific time Monday - Friday   https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1899263-what-is-the-turbotax-phone-number     If you are getting a refund, there is no penalty for filing late.  If you owe tax due, then file and pay the amount due as shown on the Form 1040, but expect a bill later from the IRS for the penalty and interest you will owe.  Only the IRS will calculate this—TurboTax will not calculate it.     When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.   Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

which desktop is better is a matter of personal preference. I started out with H&R decades ago, I did not like it after using it just one year, so I switched to TT and have been using the desktop version ever since. 2023 was fine. then in 2024 the TT developers went insane in revising the interview mode for the desktop version.  i would rate it a minus 10 (worse than what I remember about the H&R app). forms mode is still ok which is what I mainly use.   ********************** I also did something else. I have a full PC and I took an SSD from a second computer and following great instructions available on the web installed W11 on it.  Then I installed TT 2024 with no problems. Open my 2024 tax file and everything appears as it does in the original W10 version.   Also installed MS office though i had some issues. I made the computer dual boot so I can choose between booting to w10 or w11. this post is through the w11 drive.  My computer does not have a TPM not even the 1.2 version and the processor is an intel I7 4000 series.  The worst problem encountered was with my printer which dates back to W95. there is no native driver in w11 and the maker doesn't offer any except a generic PCL driver. Installing that worked but it took a while to figure out all the adjustments that had to be done so it worked.     so for $0 cost just time - a lot of it, I now have w11.
i need to file 2023 and 2021 returns. my 2021 returns were rejected i guess

Hello ,    I have  2 rental properties with NOLs starting all the way back from 2005 and accumulating up until the past 2-3 years. It appears over the past 2 years my NOLs are not being applied against my rental income.  I was told that I should check and fix my NOL election so that the NOLs can be applied against my rental income in my 2024 and past returns. How do I make this election in my 2024 return ? I do not remember making an election in any of the prior years or being asked in TurboTax. I have been using TurboTax for over 20 years.

@simmoja72 wrote: Itsdeductible is an essential part of the integrated Turbo Tax software.  If you remove it I think there is a high risk of losing a significant part of your tax software marketing share.  If they agreed they would lose a significant amount of market share, the decision to discontinue the program would not have been made in the first place. The program is also nowhere near an "essential part of TurboTax" as it's likely that the vast majority of TurboTax customers have never used it.

Re your request for input on the H&R Block consumer-level tax prep software, I can tell you that users of those versions have posted on this board over the years with the opinions being somewhat of a mixed bag.   Most of whom I can recall stated that the software did the job BUT the consensus seemed to be that it was not as intuitive (i.e., user-friendly) as TurboTax and quite a few appeared to have switched back to TurboTax after trying Block for a year.

No, it is NOT helpful since the stated requirements apply to the 2024 tax software (used to prepare 2024 income tax returns).   Again, read the post from the Reddit user who actually called Block support. He was simply told that the software would be released sometime in November and they were not aware whether there would be any changes in the system requirements (i.e., no commitment one way or the other).,

Perhaps this new piece of information might be helpful. The following copy and paste, taken today, came directly from the H&R Block website. It seems consistent with the Google replies: To install your tax software, your computer needs to be able to meet several H&R Block software system requirements. Without these basic requirements, the H&R Block Tax Software might not be able to function properly on your computer. The H&R Block Tax Software minimum system requirements for Windows and Mac are below. Windows: Operating system: Windows® 10 or higher. Browser: Internet Explorer® 11 or higher Mac: Operating system: Mac OS® X 10.15.7 or higher. Browser: Safari® 15.6.1 or higher. General: Hard-Disk Space: 170MB Monitor: 1024×768, SVGA color monitor Printer: Compatible inkjet or laser Speakers and Sound Card: For videos / animations You’ll also need an internet connection to meet H&R Block software system requirements.
