On April 15, 2025 I contributed twice the allowed amount  ($8000 x 2) to my Non Deductible IRA for tax year 2024.  On Dec 4, 2025 I received notice of the double contribution from my custodian.  When I filed my 2024 taxes, I didn't include the double contribution, only the $8000 that I'm allowed on form 8606 for Non Deductible IRAs.   I know I need to correct the situation, but I'm unclear on my options.  I read that I must remove the excess contribution, and pay a 6% penalty on the over contribution and a 10% penalty on the earnings.  I'm not sure if it makes a difference that I made the excess 2024 contribution in 2025, and I didn't include it in my tax filing, and I plan to correct it before year end 2025.  Can I avoid the 6% penalty?  How would I handle the paperwork?  Must I file an amended 2024 return even though I didn't include the excess contribution in my tax filing?  Thanks!
Yes, I"m noticing now that the same thing has happened to me.  Filed 2 W-2's for my LLC/S-Corp with QEF on January 16, 2025, and I now see that they were received at IRS/SSA as 2023 W-2's.
The program is not yet robust and there will be many updates until late January.

Thank you for the really comprehensive and detailed reply - it's really helpful!   In what circumstances could Turbotax have entered a penalty in line 38 but NOT included a Form 2210? Because I have doublechecked and confirmed there is definitely not one.   It makes sense that the amount could be a penalty for underpayment of estimated taxes (I work for an international org where no taxes are withheld from my paycheck and my employer pays my estimated taxes and any additional due at the end of the year - but this doesn't change anything from the perspective of the IRS). My earnings can vary a bit from year to year.   I just want to know where TurboTax got the number from, and they won't tell me. Without a Form 2210, I don't know where it came from. I've now filed a 1040-x, but that penalty came from my first 1040. When determining the amount owed for my 1040-x, Turbo tax deducted [amount paid with my first 1040 - the $153 penalty], so it's essentially been carried over into my 1040-x. But that also doesn't have a Form 2210!   I'm sorry this is such a mystery to solve. Is it possible TurboTax just made a mistake and deleted my Form 2210?

I work for an international organization that does pay our taxes. They are not withheld from our paycheck, and we do have to make estimated tax payments (also made by my employer). If they underpaid my estimated taxes or gave me a wrong statement of earnings (our W-2 equivalent - we don't use W-4s), I think they likely will cover the cost of any mistakes.   Obviously that's a very unique situation to be in, but I am still responsible for filing my taxes correctly, and I wish there was some way to find out how TurboTax came up with this number. I've called them twice and they refuse to provide any information.
I will probably record a loss after deductions such as COGS, postage, and use of residence.

IRS interview to help determine who can be claimed: https://www.irs.gov/help/ita/who-can-i-claim-as-a-dependent     WHO CAN I CLAIM AS A DEPENDENT?   You can claim a child, relative, friend, or fiancé (etc.) as a dependent on your 2025 taxes as long as they meet the following requirements: Qualifying child They're related to you. They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else. They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident. They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse. They're under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students). No age limit for permanently and totally disabled children. They lived with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply). They didn't provide more than half of their own support for the year. Qualifying relative They don't have to be related to you (despite the name). They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else. They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident. They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse. They lived with you the entire year (exceptions apply). They made less than $5200 in 2025 (not counting Social Security) You provided more than half of their financial support. When you add someone as a dependent, we'll ask a series of questions to make sure you can claim them. There may be other tax benefits you can get when you claim a dependent. Related Information: What does "financially support another person" mean?
We have no information from you about your brother.   So....maybe.  Provide some details without any personal information like your name or SSN, etc.

To check on regular tax refund status via automated phone, call 800-829-1954.   Federal and state refunds come from completely separate entities.  There is no rule as to which one will come in first or how long it will be between their arrival in your account.   TurboTax gives you an estimated date for receiving your refund based on a 21 day average from your date of acceptance, but it can take longer.  “21 days”  is not a promise from TurboTax or the IRS.      First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:  https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/   Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control.  TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.     You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 35a of your 2024 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:    https://www.irs.gov/refunds   To track your state refund:     https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/track-state-refund/L3jgO8PGs_US_en_US?uid=lt447ebr   If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing     https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/refunds-take-longer-others/L14YlqFrH_US_en_US?uid=lexdr7zh . https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/irs-refund-taking-longer-21-days/L2vRAJbdU_US_en_US?uid=lexe7lst
