This was for the 2024 tax year. I used desktop TurboTax as I have for years.

The answer to both of your questions are "no".  It makes no difference whatsoever whether the money stays in Colombia or transferred to the U.S.    Once the pension plan releases the money to your wife, it's taxable income to your wife.   U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents are taxed on their worldwide income, regardless of where they live or work, including foreign pension income, even if it was earned before becoming a U.S. resident.

@Fasi wrote: I got married in October 2024 to a single mother who has a biological child. For the 2024 tax year we filed jointly with me as the primary taxpayer. My spouse did not have any income in 2024. We claimed the child as a dependent but I did not claim the Earned Income Credit (EIC) because I believed the child did not live with me for more than half the year. The child has lived with his biological mother who's now my wife his entire life. Because you were legally married on December 31, and the child lived with one of the parents for more than half the year, you can claim the child as an eligible dependent for EITC on your joint return.  It is not necessary for the child to have lived with both parents equally.

Thank you. My wife says that she wouldn't pay taxes on this pension bonus until next year, so I would think that I couldn't apply for any credit until I do my 2026 tax return, which of course would be in 2027.   Just to be clear about some things:   1. We actually have no plans or intent of moving this money to the US, instead the money is going to be entirely used in Colombia. Does that make a difference in determining whether or not this bonus is subject to US income taxes.   2. This pension bonus is based entirely on income my wife received working jobs in Colombia before we got married in 1998. Does that make a difference in determining whether or not this bonus is subject to US income taxes.

Thanks for this idea. I was able to chat with what seemed to be a human via FB Messenger. It was a human, but basically just copying and pasting the same answers that we all found, and which don't work. He then proceeded to ask me to provide very very very detailed personal information. What broke me was that I was asked to provide my social security number. Why does TurboTax need all this personal info in order to help me resolve this technical issue?? Aren't my license keys enough? I refused to go further! It's crazy enough that they capture every minute detail about our computers' configurations, why do they need social security numbers and more? They're collecting way too much personal data. I told him that he has my personal details as well as the activation keys in my online profile on their website. It's all in their database. He said that although this is true (yes, he admitted that he already has all this info) he can't continue the chat without this info again. I figured that he wouldn't be able to help me anyway as he was copying and pasting answers prior to this, so I will use my remaining activation to work on my return in one shot. It seems like there are many people experiencing the activation issues and TurboTax isn't doing anything to resolve it. Perhaps next year I will go ahead with another tax return solution.
Please clear your browser cache (or use a different browser) and try again. If you are still not able to resolve this issue, please contact our phone support team for more assistance.
The result suggests that you reported a Roth conversion, not a recharacterization.  If the Form 1099-R has code 1, 2 o 7, the financial institution processed a Roth conversion.
It worked ! Thanks so much
Correct.  In this case the distribution was made before the 6-month extension period, not during the 6-month extension period.   See section 301.9100-2(b):  https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/26/... See more...

Financial institutions do not report interest less than $10 to taxpayers.  If this $5.23 is interest from the IRS, it should be reported? I'm mostly interested in where the IRS changed the tax return, if that actually happened.   If the IRS changed the return, and the AGI changed, it may impact whether I can efile next year's TY25 return.

You are now the step parent of your spouse's child.   If you filed a joint tax return with your spouse---which you say you did--and claimed the child as your dependent on that joint return, it would be fine for you to get the earned income credit.  So, yes, complete Form 15111 and submit it--following the IRS instructions carefully.

TurboTax gets no information from the IRS after you file your tax return.  Only the IRS is in control, and only the IRS can tell you when your refund will be issued. Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control.  TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.     You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 35a of your 2024 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:    https://www.irs.gov/refunds     Call the IRS: 1-800-829-1040 hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Monday-Friday When calling the IRS do NOT choose the first option re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line. So after first choosing your language, then do NOT choose Option 1 (refund info). Choose option 2 for "personal income tax" instead. Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment". Then press 3 "for all other questions." Then press 2 "for all other questions." - When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, don't enter anything. - After it asks twice, you will get another menu. Press 2 for personal or individual tax questions. Then press 3 for all other inquiries It should then transfer you to an agent.
