Are you using the wrong refund amount when you track it on the IRS site? https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/    Sometimes people get confused by the “summary” given by TurboTax and use the wrong amount for the federal refund.  Make sure you are only using the federal refund amount, and not an amount that combined your federal and state refunds.     Your federal refund amount is on line 35a of your Form 1040   https://www.irs.gov/refunds

I left a job that provided a $10k bonus last year before my contracted time was up. I always knew that I was going to have to pay back the bonus and tried to contact them to no avail. Now the following year and three months later, I finally got the letter to start the process. Since this was given last year, I have already paid taxes on the money and filed the extra income with my taxes and submitted in April. They are requesting the entire amount. How can this happen if I have already taken the tax hit? I really do not want to file an amendment after the fact, as everything seems complicated a year later. What is my recourse and what is the best way to handle this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

TurboTax gives you an estimated date for receiving your refund based on a 21 day average from your date of acceptance, but it can take longer.  “21 days”  is not a promise from TurboTax or the IRS.      First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:  https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/   Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control.  TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. It depends on what you chose.  You said "check", but did you mean instead "direct deposit?"   If you mean direct deposit, then possibilities include funds going directly to one's bank account (or a debit card), or perhaps to a Credit Karma Money Spend account/card (if you chose that option.)        However, IF you had any TurboTax fees that you paid out of the Federal refund, the funds first go from the IRS to a temporary account at an intermediary bank where the fees are subtracted, then that bank sends it to your bank (or card) in a second direct deposit.  If you used that method to pay any TurboTax fees, that's handled by a company SBTPG, and we can tell you how to check on your refund at the level of the intermediary bank.  If you did NOT pay any fees that way, then this paragraph does not apply to you.   You can review your refund choice by getting the full PDF of your return using the steps below.   Then if you review the page called "Federal Tax Return Summary" and a page called "Filing Instructions",  you can hopefully see how your refund is being handled.   Note:  When you open your return interview back up, do NOT make any changes in it.  If you later have to amend the return for some reason, it has to start off exactly as filed.   Sign in to TurboTax. If you're already signed in, select Tax Home. Scroll down to and open Your tax returns & documents. Select 2024, and then select Add a State (you're not actually adding a state, this just gets you into the right area). When the return interview is open, go to the left column menu, select Tax tools, and then select Print Center. Select Print, save or preview this year’s return. Select 2024 Federal return and then Include government and TurboTax worksheets.  You can include your state return, if applicable, if you want a copy of it, too. Select View or Print.  (or you can choose to download the PDF if you want to save a copy) Usually the first page in the PDF is your Federal Tax Return Summary. On that page, in the first section, you'll see the bank account info you entered for your direct deposit.   Also look for the page "Filing Instructions" which may have info on how your refund is being handled. While you are in the Print Center, if you wish to do so, you can download a PDF copy of the Federal and state returns and worksheets, if desired, for your records.   See caution note below. NOTE:  Remember all PDF tax documents, printed copies, and tax data files are very sensitive files, since they contain your personal ID info, financial data, and possibly bank account numbers, etc.  Be sure to store them safely and securely to guard against computer theft, hacking, etc.

Same here this is a bad BUG!!!!    CA State will think you reported not living in the State when you report zero income but live in the state.  It's because TurboTax just made your income for CA $0 by reporting it all as PML.  The audit check has a BIG BUG saying Low Risk of Audit.     The W-2 Section presents a completed screen say "You're doing great—next we'll find you tax breaks" then presents a "Let's check for uncommon situations" and lists "Paid Family Leave" ( note makes no refrence here to the W-2 )  it's doesn't appear to be related to the W-2 and it's when you are completing your Federal so the connection to state is not apparent...that's ok TurboTax has got your back...nope! Later you select California as the state it uses the above to default all your W-2 income as PFL, which results in a big state refund.    This is VERY wrong the right thing to do would be #1 Default to 0 on the state as you haven't stated how much was PFL #2 Flag as an error when you run the analysis check     a) Error that you didn't enter a number and send you to the state page to review      ( Look at View -> My Tax Data they are tracking when it's your input vs populated)    b) Error that you didn't check the box that says "I've reviewed the above amount and adjusted it, if necessary" Yup they even have a check box for this and it should flag as an error.    c) Review -> Audit protection falsely reports LOW / Green when the above occurs and the realty is you will get Audited and hit with interest fees.

If you are referring to a tax refund, here's how you can investigate.   First of all, it depends on how you filed; i.e., whether it was by efile or by printing and mailing a paper return.   An efiled return normally takes up to 21 days for the IRS to process, but it's not uncommon for it to be further delayed if the IRS has to review anything.  A mailed paper return can take 6 weeks or longer to process. If your efiled return has been delayed more than 21 days, here are some things you should check before phoning the IRS:   If you efiled, double-check to be sure the return was efiled successfully and accepted. If you used Online TurboTax, you can sign into your Online Account and check the efile status at the Tax Home.   If you prepared it online, does it show the status of the return as accepted, rejected, printed, started, ready to mail, or something else? If you used desktop software, you can check from within the software. If that showed that your efiled return was accepted, (or if you mailed a paper return), you can use the "Where's My Refund" tool at the IRS website below to monitor the status of your Federal refund.  https://www.irs.gov/wheres-my-refund See what is displayed there about your refund.   Is there any message?   Here are some tips when using the IRS "Where's My Refund" tool:   If you efiled, be sure you have waited at least 24 hours after acceptance before using the IRS WMR tool.   If you mailed a paper return, it won't show up in the tool for at least 4 weeks or longer. Be sure you enter the correct tax year, SSN and filing status.
