why do it unless the sales proceeds are more than the cost of the replacement shares in the nontaxable account      there are no wash sales for buying and selling the same stock within an IRA or even selling in one IRA and buying in another. That's because the loss is not reflected on your 1040.   You can even sell at a loss in an IRA and buy the same stock the same day in a taxable account, and there would be no wash sale. The opposite is not true. sell at a loss in a taxable account, and you will create a wash sale (you need to adjust manually because brokers, generally, don't handle wash sales that occur when multiple accounts are used) if you buy substantially identical securities 30 days before or after the loss sale in the taxable account.

We recharacterized $1619 of our Roth IRA contributions to a Traditional IRA in 2025 so that we could get a tax deduction for the contributions. What do I put in the Recharacterize reason box on turbo tax home and business desktop? Is “To get a tax deduction” okay to enter in that box?

Found my error as well that matches a similar answer (1040SR Line 6a & b).    The questions on living abroad were answered incorrectly.  I answered Yes vs NO.   I corrected to NO & it solved the SS tax issue.   Hope this helps.

Thank you for the advice.  You are correct.  I am over 65.  That explains the 33,100 federal standard deduction.  However, I am still having trouble with the DC standard deduction.  Turbotax still has 31,600 entered on line 18 of the DC D-40 form.  I found DC Schedule S as you suggested, but it was not filled out by Turbotax even though it knows that I am over 65 by my birthdate.  I went back through the questions for the DC return and nowhere does it ask whether I am over 65.  How can I include Schedule S with my return if Turbotax has not completed it?
Do you have my 2024 w2

Just opened up TurboTax and was told there was an upgrade, which I downloaded. Then I tried once again to go through e-filing, only to find the same old response: "We need a little more information before you can e-file." and ran into the same bug on form 5695. In my case, what causes the rejection is that nothing should be on Line 21 c on the form, but I cannot remove the information there. When I look on the "Forms" listing, I find a red mark at Form 5695, which seems to indicate the form is not complete or defective. All that is marked on Form 5695 is my name and address and a few X's at Yes or No questions, with no numbers at all entered. I don't remember seeing that form when I worked through TurboTax, although I might have forgotten it. Our heat pump was installed in 2022, and that is the only year I find a form 5695 filed. None is included in 2023 and 2024, and the 2025 form does not have any dollar figures and does not work. Something is screwed up and it looks like it's the software for processing 5695. What's going to happen to us if TurboTax never can solve the problem to process our 2025 taxes?

It definitely sounds wrong but in the opposite manner. I am concerned your full income is not showing for the calculations. If it is your gambling income doubling, go back through the OK program and see if you marked an amount to be taxable in one of the several places you have an opportunity to enter information.    OK is among the majority of states that tax a nonresident or part-year resident using apportionment/ allocating the tax. The full income from everywhere is reported. OK will look at your total family income for the year and determine the tax on that amount.  Then, they look at what percentage of the income was actually from OK. OK multiplies the percentage of OK income times the OK tax. For example: OK tax on your federal income is $8,000 But only 10% of your income was earned in OK OK tax liability will be 10% of $8,000 or $800.  Let me get you to preview your return and check. If you are using the online version: go to Tax Tools, then select Tools, select View Tax Summary, on the left side, select Preview My 1040. In the desktop program, switch to forms mode. Take a look at the 511NR: Line 6 is OK source income - your gambling winnings Line 7 is all income earned Line 9 is income after adjustments - probably all of your income earned everywhere Line 13 taxable income after OK deductions and exemptions Line 14 tax on line 13 income Line 17 shows OK amount and federal amount create your OK percentage of income Line 18 is the OK percentage times OK tax
