This conversion is taxable. And the tax due on this conversion depends on your tax bracket when you add the amount of conversion to your projected taxable income in 2025.   For example, if your marginal tax bracket for the conversion is 32%, then you'll owe $32,000 of additional taxes on a conversion of $100,000.   The marginal tax brackets for 2025 can be found in this IRS document.

If you do not pay in enough tax from withholding and estimates, you may have to pay a penalty for underpayment of estimated tax. The penalty is an Estimated amount. Even if you are getting a refund you can still owe a penalty for not paying in evenly during the year. Generally, most taxpayers will avoid this penalty if they owe less than $1,000 in tax after subtracting their withholdings and credits, or if they paid at least 90% of the tax for the current year, or 100% of the tax shown on the return for the prior year, whichever is smaller. It is included in your tax due or reduces your refund. If you get a penalty on 1040 line 38, you might be able to eliminate it or at least reduce it. You can go to Federal Taxes tab or Personal tab, under Other Tax Situations and select Start by the Underpayment Penalties. You will answer a series of questions that may reduce or eliminate the penalty. Or you can elect to have the IRS figure the penalty for you. It's form 2210. First, the fact that some of it is taxable to the federal, tells me the employer paid for some portion of the premiums. See Life insurance & disability insurance proceeds | IRS. This means if you paid all of your premium, all of your disability is tax free. If you paid 40% of your premium and your employer paid the rest, then 40% of your disability is tax free. Second, IL DOR is limited in who is not taxed on disability. Link for IL Univ employees above - not taxable  IL municipal Retirement Fund - not taxable    Social Security - not taxable Third,  if you have private insurance that has a federal taxable portion, it sounds taxable in IL. (I called and escalated to a senior service specialist at IL DOR- this is for TY24 and rules do change).   My thoughts are that disability is actually is taxable  to the state if it is taxable to the federal, except for the definitely not taxable section. Maybe that section is larger and they just didn't mention everything.   Note: the federal does share filings with the state. You may have federal income but not state, depending on your situation.  @williamsb645 IN also begins with the federal AGI so you may get a tax credit on IL for tax paid to IN.

There are a number of reasons why your refund amount may change from one year to the next. Some of the most common reasons are because you earned more income this year, you did not withhold enough taxes from your pay or you did not make enough estimated tax payments, or your deductions and credits were reduced this year.  For more information, please review, "Why did my refund go down compared to last year's?".

I'm having the same trouble.  I get a message that says "Success! We've got your tax data.  You can return to Turbo Tax" but when I return to TT, the download isn't there.  I have made sure all antivirus protection and shields are down. I'm not on TT Online, I downloaded the software. I'm on Windows, but my daughter had no trouble importing onto her Mac.   I'm out of ideas. I guess it's time to go manual.

Based on your Medicare tax, your Medicare wages are $151,862. If you are filing married-separate, you would be subject to the additional Medicare tax on income at that level. Otherwise, I suggest you delete you W-2 entry and see if the Form 8959 disappears, then re-enter it.    To view the forms in your program:   1. Choose the Tax Tools option on your left menu bar while working on your return 2. Choose Tools 3. Choose the Delete a form option under Other Helpful links

Yes, this nonresident credit is strictly calculated to remove or credit the tax calculated on the entire year's income which is the first calculation on the Maine (ME) return. The credit for your part year residency has nothing to do with a 'credit for taxes paid to another state on the same income'. Tax calculations on several states start with the federal income and then is adjusted in situations like yours.   It seems the credit should be correct as it stands because it has nothing to do with the DC part year resident return. The key information in your post from the ME instructions is exactly what I am explaining: You tax liability is first calculated as if you were a resident of Maine for the entire year.   You are then allowed to calculate a nonresident credit on Maine Schedule NR that will reduce your Maine tax by the portion of the tax that is related to the income your earned outside the state while a nonresident. @khbloomer

Unfortunate but understood, thanks for clarifying. I'm glad to just be done with this mess and start fresh with 2025.   I had excess in 2024 as well but that was removed timely in January 2025, so I will thankfully only pay the taxes on that excess in the 2024 return and on the earnings in the 2025 return.
i did itemize my deductions last year. how will I know it's not taxable?

I am unable to open my filed return after logging into my account at turbotax online.. I used only turbotax online, not a desktop version. Prior to filing I was able to go to tools/printcenter to print (including print to PDF) the following items or combo of items: 1) the return, 2) supporting schedules not to be filed with the return and 3) various worksheets used by TurboTax. After filing I cannot access the print center, but am only given the option to download. this download only includes the return. How can I print/download the other schedules and worksheets described as 2) and 3) above?

Hi all,   I work in New York and living in New Jersey. I don't have any withholdings for New Jersey. Just finished Federal and New York and due for refunds. I'm going through the New Jersey portion now. I'm at the question "Let's Confirm Your Taxable State Wages from..." and it lists NY and NJ state wages and can check the boxes for both to remove. When I check to remove either or both, it's showing that I'm due for a New Jersey refund, e.g. over $10,000. Historically, I have paid New Jersey for every years filings. I'm confused why I'm getting this amount (a large amount too) from New Jersey for this year's filing.   Not sure if TurboTax misread my W-2 but  there are two NY sections, one for Federal, and one for NJ. All sections have box 16 with wages. Not sure if this has anything to do with it and not sure how to go about this. Any guidance is much appreciated.   Thank you

Hi ,   I worked at the same job in NJ for all of 2024. I lived in NYC for first 200 days or .55% of the year of 2024. Then I moved to NJ.  In my W2 Box has an amount $140000 Box 14 has a row 'NY State Wages'  $100,000 Boxes 15-16 have 2 rows , 1 for NY, 1 for NJ like"  Box 15 Box 16 NJ $145000 NY $14000   For my NY return,  What is the correct  amount of total income that I should attribute to NY?   140,000 * 0.55?   or the $100,000 reported in Box 14?   For the NJ return , what is the correct amount of total income hat I should attribute to NJ?  $145,000 * 0.45 ? or $145,000 - $100,000 reported in Box 14?     Also,  overall in this situation for NJ, do I need a NJ part time resident return AND  a NJ nonresident return ?  It seems turbotax does not allow e-filing in this case?    Thanks,

I turned off the computer's antivirus protection, and it still doesn't work.  I am able to sign in to Charles Schwab and get the "Success! We've got your tax information. You can return to Turbo Tax" message, but when I go back to Turbo Tax the download still isn't there.   Any other ideas? Would love to get this resolved so I don't have to enter manually as there is much to enter this year, but will do it if I have to.
