What do you mean by 'In 2024 I added to the balance of of my home acquisition debt'. Did you do a cash-out refinance or did you take out a second mortgage? If you refinanced and took out cash, the limit on the new loan is $750K. If you took out a second mortgage, your existing mortgage limit is still $1.1M and the limit on the second mortgage is $750K. Note, however, that the $750K limit on the second mortgage is reduced by the limit amount used up on the existing mortgage.

You do not have to wait for him to amend.  You can mail your return when you have it ready to put in an envelope.  If it is any comfort, this is a very common problem for parents with teenagers or young adults who are filing tax returns for the first time.   When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.   Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

A few large banks in some states have different routing numbers for ACH electronic deposits that differ from the one shown on a paper check for checking purposes.   I think Bank of America does this in a few states where they divide the state into regions, but there are some others.  You should confirm with your bank or look in your Online banking account or your bank's FAQ to be sure what routing number to use for ACH direct deposits.

That screen is telling you to switch to itemized deductions instead of taking the standard deduction.   You can switch back and forth - you should choose the deduction that is the highest.   If you already changed from the deduction TurboTax recommended, you will need to manually select the option that is best for your situation.    See How do I change from the standard deduction to itemized (or vice-versa)?

@AmyC, that seems like a bug. Can I force my resident state to recalculate or go back through part of an interview in TurboTax? I already finished inputting my California information. I now need to input information for Montana and Oregon because of a K-1 that I just received.   In general, if I have changes that affect my non-resident state, are you saying that I would need to restart my resident state? That is a big burden.

You will be able to access the 2023 return you started by using the exact same account and user ID that you used when you started it.   But you can no longer use online software for any further changes.       Start a 2024  return online and enter some personal information  so that the menu on the left opens up and lets you access your past year returns.   Online tax preparation and e-filing for 2023 returns is now permanently closed.    Now it is too late to use online software or to e-file. If you have any changes/corrections at all to make to your 2023 return, you now have to complete it using desktop software, which you must download to a full PC or Mac  (not to a mobile device). Then you need to print, sign and mail it.   https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/printers-printing/finish-prior-year-return-started-turbotax-online/L9Oe4M90A_US_en_US?uid=m68tffpe   If you already paid for your online software you can ask customer support for a download of the desktop software.   They are available from 5 a.m. to 9p.m. Pacific time daily   https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1899263-what-is-the-turbotax-phone-number     If you are getting a refund, there is no penalty for filing late.  If you owe tax due, then file and pay the amount due as shown on the Form 1040, but expect a bill later from the IRS for the penalty and interest you will owe.  Only the IRS will calculate this—TurboTax will not calculate it.     When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.   Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Yes, unless you use the simplified method.   If you use the regular method, the unused portion of your home office deduction will carry forward to future years.   You might not be able to deduct all of your expenses if your business expenses exceed your income from the business use of your home for the year.   In this case, the nondeductible expenses can be carried over and applied in the following tax year.    Note that any deduction for the carryover amount is subject to the gross income limit for the following year, whether or not you still live in the same home that year.   The Home Office Deduction

Why can't I enter 1099R forms in TT business just the same way I enter them in TT Premier.  I can only put in in other, and there is no room for taxable amount, tax withholding, type of distribution, etc. Makes no sense. I have at least 7 1099-R. I am entering these all filing for a trust. The trust is the beneficiary of all these 1099.  Can't TT fix this quickly? I am going to have to file an extension because this does not work correctly.

Hi, I made excess Roth IRA contributions few years ago and I removed both contributions and earnings in 2024. I removed $2400 as contributions, $700 as earnings with a total of $3,100 and around $76 is federal tax held. However, the 1099-R, I received from my financial institution says the total gross distribution as $3100 without splitting contribution and earnings. When I entered this in TurboTax, I am being taxed because the distribution isn't qualified (home-buying or after 59.5 years of age).   I believe I have to pay regular tax rate (based on my income) on the $700 earnings only. I don't understand how this was reported and interpreted by TurboTax software.

This is a phenomenally messed up part of tax reporting and Turbotax which appears does not have a good grip on the rules. Before panicking, remember that the 2025 IRS has been DOGE smashed like a punch-drunk heavy weight boxer. They aren't going to wasting time on obscurities when they can barely process the incoming coming flood of 2024 tax returns while Trump wants to put them permanently out of business. If we must reduce our standard of living so oligarchs don't have to pay income tax, at least this unwarranted invasion of privacy should be on the chopping block too. It's a new day bowing before the ERS, planned successor to the devastated IRS.   That said, "maximum value" is ambiguous. I will go with the FinCen definition which is stupid enough to satisfy the most extravagant interpretation remembering none of this is about taxation, only invasion of privacy and extra-territorial intimidation. Overstating maximum value does not generate overstated tax. Sigh, it does not generate a single penny in deductions or credits. Just your wasted time. They only want to look underneath your sk--t. Kinda of like TSA "checking" for financial matters. Most all, unless you have really big amounts it is doubtful that 99% of people caught in this external reporting hell are any serious threat of being big time money launderers.   "If the maximum account value of a single account or aggregate of the maximum account values of multiple accounts exceeds $10,000, an FBAR must be filed. An FBAR is not required to be filed if the person did not have $10,000 of maximum value or aggregate maximum value in foreign financial accounts at any time during the calendar year. For United States persons with a financial interest in or signature authority over fewer than 25 accounts that are unable to determine if the aggregate maximum account values of the accounts exceeded $10,000 at any time during the calendar year, complete the appropriate Part II, III, IV, or V section for each of these accounts and check the “amount unknown” box, item 15a.   One final comment relevant to our times. To renounce US citizenship you have to show that you filed the last five years of Form 8938. (FinCen has its own threat mechanisms, but I don't think that is one of them). Congress wanted to go after people trying to get out of extraterritorial taxation which only the US and Liberia do. Play straight, nobody wants an unscheduled Central American stay.

Some people have a 0 or two before their routing number.  Be sure to enter it manually, not copy/paste.  You can double-check your routing number if you're not sure by searching on 'routing number for xxxx bank in xxxx '(your state).   If you're using TurboTax Desktop, in FORMS, you can manually enter the Routing Number at the bottom of Form 1040.   If you're using TurboTax Online, clear your Cache and Cookies, then retry your entry.   @desireefarr
