It depends. The Roth contributions is limited by your total modified adjusted gross income (MAGI), not just self employment.   For 2025, for couples filing jointly, Roth IRA contributions are allowed up the maximum limit of $7,000 (plus $1,000 catch up if aged 50 or older) for MAGI up to $236,000.   $165,000 for single, head of household, or married filing separately and you didn’t live with your spouse at any time during the year; and  $10,000 for married filing separately and you lived with your spouse at any time during the year.   See this IRS publication, page 39   No contribution is allowed for MAGI of $246,000 or over for married filing jointly, and $165,000 for single, head of household and married filing separately and you didn’t live with your spouse at any time during the year.   Please update here if you have more details and or questions and we will help.

If you took the standard deduction on your federal return, the $400 rebate is not taxable.    If you itemized your deductions on your federal return, you may need to report the rebate as income on your 2025 federal return. NOTE: Even if you itemized, the rebate might still be non-taxable if your total state and local taxes (SALT) exceeded the $10,000 federal cap. If subtracting the $400 rebate from your total state taxes still leaves you above that $10,000 limit, the rebate generally isn't taxed.  If you used TurboTax, it will have your 2024 information transferred and will indicate it it is taxable if you enter the 1099-G.

CALIFORNIA state tax is unable to be opened. Loop of apparently successful download sequence, but Start button just reinitiates another download.  This problem was noted for the Business TT for NY, due to form not being available.  I can't believe the CA form is still not available this late in April?  Any help, please?  I really count on TT to fill out these forms and file! DID YOU E-FILE?   Did you e-file?   Did you go through all three steps of the FILE section and click a big orange button that said “Transmit my returns now?”     When you e-file your return you will get two emails from TurboTax.  The first one will say your return has been transmitted; the second one will tell you the IRS has accepted  or rejected your federal e-file.  If you filed a state return, there will be a third email (usually a day or two later) that tells you if the state e-file was accepted or rejected.   Check your e-file status:   https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/    What does it say in your account?  Does it show that the return was accepted?   Or does it say something else---like "rejected," "printed," or "ready to mail?”

Repayments of disability benefits to a private insurance company (often due to an SSDI lump-sum award) are handled based on the amount repaid and the year it was originally received as income.  To enter in TurboTax:   Enter the Social Security (SSA-1099) in the Federal > Wages & Income under Retirement Plans and Social Security and select Social Security (SSA-1099). Enter your SSA-1099 exactly as it appears. On the screen asking, "Did you receive any lump-sum payments for 2024 or earlier?", select Yes. TurboTax will guide you through the "Lump-Sum Election" method, which helps prevent a large back-payment from pushing you into a higher tax bracket. This will correctly populate Line 6a (total benefits) and Line 6b (taxable portion) on your 1040.

When you enter the childcare credit on your tax return, you also must enter a SSN or Tax ID for the person or daycare service that provided the childcare.  The IRS matches up the amount you paid with the income reported by the person with that SSN or Tax ID.   You cannot pay a babysitter "under the table" and get child care credit.

No. It is important to understand that claiming this credit while paying "under the table" is not allowed.    To claim the Child and Dependent Care Credit, you are legally required to disclose the sitter’s Social Security Number, which creates a record of her earnings. If she is not reporting that money as income while you are reporting it as an expense, it creates a red flag for tax evasion that could trigger an audit for both of you.    Furthermore, if the total you pay her exceeds the annual IRS threshold, which is $2,800 for the 2025 tax year, the law requires you to withhold and pay household employment taxes.    You may find this article helpful: Guide to the Nanny Tax for Babysitters and Employers

Because you filed your Federal return as Married Filing Jointly (MFJ), Ohio law requires you to use the same filing status for your state return. This causes all income from your federal return—including your Michigan wages and retirement income—to automatically flow into the first line of the Ohio return.  However, due to reciprocity and residency credits, you should not actually pay Ohio tax on your Michigan-sourced income.  If your husband had Michigan tax withheld, you report the income to Michigan only and do not have to file an Ohio tax return.

Yes. You would only report that you took a partial RMD of $12,000 by the December 31, 2025 deadline and would like to request a waiver via Form 5329 for the portion that was missed. In TurboTax, do the following:   Go to Wages & Income in the Federal section of your tax return Select Update to the right of Retirement Plans and Social Security Select the pencil to the right of your Form 1099-R to edit your entries When you reach, "Let's get more information about your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)", enter the amount of your RMD ($21,000) that was due by December 31, 2025, Continue On the next screen, "How much of this distribution applied to your December 31, 2025 RMD?", select "Some of the distribution applied...($12,000)", Continue Next, you will be asked, "Did you take out the remaining $ during the correction window?", Select, "No, I did not", Continue When you reach, "Review your 1099-R summary, Continue (not the pencil) When you reach, "Let's go over any required minimum distributions (RMD), Select the pencil Next, you will see, "Did you miss taking the...RMD...?", Select Yes, Continue Enter the amount of the RMD (that you should have taken) when you reach, "Tell us the Total RMD...", Continue Select "No", when asked, "Did you take a corrective distribution...?", Continue Do you want to request a waiver, select, "Yes", Continue Next, enter the amount of your RMD for which you are requesting the waiver ($9,000), Continue Next, enter an explanation such as, "I mistakenly did not take my full RMD due to an administrative error. Upon discovering the error in January 2026, I immediately withdrew the remaining balance of $_. I have now set up an automatic withdrawal to ensure this does not happen again." then Continue When you reach, "Let's go over any required minimum distributions (RMD), Continue (not the pencil)
put the wrong routing number on my direct deposit form. Turbotax shows that a check was mailed 4/3. I have something in the mail today from TurboTax. Could that be my refund?
