Clergy will typically receive a W-2 that doesn't include their housing allowance in box 1, 3 or 5, but they will have the housing allowance reported in Box 14 of the W-2 or they may receive a separate statement of that housing allowance.
When you input your W-2 in TurboTax, you would have encountered a screen "Let's check for other situations", where you check Religious employment. Two screens later you will report your housing allowance received and then the amount of the qualifying expenses. If these two amounts are equal, then none of it is subject to income tax. If your qualifying expenses were less than your allowance, the difference will be added to your taxable income and subject to income tax.
For determination of the Form 8960 Net Investment Income Tax, Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) on line 13 is the Federal Adjusted Gross Income (AGI), plus a few addbacks of Foreign income items. Since the amount of any taxable housing allowance is part of the AGI, then it is also part of the calculation of NIIT on Form 8960. Also, if all of your housing allowance was excludible on Form 1040, then none of it will be part of the calculation of the NIIT.

Unbelievable, now there are THREE sheets! The 3rd blank worksheet is indirectly related to the first two, called 'IRA Contributions'. Is the insertion of these blank sheets a bug or is there an actual reason they are being included in the Forms View/return? I went back and checked on last year's TurboTax 2024 and these 3 forms are NOT generated in the Forms View when they are blank/non-relevant. For some reason this year TT is inserting a lot blank garbage. I assume it's safe to delete these sheets?? Anyone else seeing these blanks worksheets in their Forms view/return, or able to duplicate the behavior using the steps previously mentioned??

Thank you. If the Ohio tax is not taxable, why would it then impact my refund by $69. When I had the 1099-G in, the refund was higher, but then I had to use the paid version.

Once you file your return, as long as the settings to receive communication from Intuit don’t block it, you will see a pop-up message or receive an email with a survey asking you about your experience. We encourage you to leave your notes and comments there. “Voice of the Customer” notes and comments are read and acted upon. If you are using TurboTax Desktop, you can also leave feedback at the Final Steps tab.
Your feedback will help Intuit TurboTax serve everyone better.

Yes, you should remove the 1099-Q since it is not taxable. IRS Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Education states that nontaxable distributions should not be entered. You should keep the form and supporting documents with your tax file, in case the IRS does ask in a few years.
You should be able to enter it without a tax so my guess would be in the education section that the program is trying to hold some of it -up to $10,000 for the lifetime learning credit. If you don't enter the forms in a certain way, Q first, then T, you can end up with a taxable amount.
The IRS actually does say that they prefer not to deal with forms that are not taxable, I do recommend you remove it.

After answering "no" and "customer service" to the bot for about 20 plus questions, I was privileged enough to wait 10-15 minutes for a representative, Jasmine (silent "J" pronounced "H") who hung up on me after correcting me about pronouncing her name and listening to 2 sentences from me. Not calling back. It is the ONLY way to contact them. that 800 number and a bot plays 20 questions.

It won't let you efile the California return until the federal return is also fileable.
You are correct that the information that you enter is not going to be entirely correct if you enter that the payment was made on April 15th. But the IRS is aware of the date that they received the payment and having them compute the penalty for you is the thing the system wants you to do. The possibility that the overall tax return will result in no penalty because of the difference in what is owed overall means that maybe you don't owe that $25 penalty. I would recommend that you change the date to April 15th and then see if you receive a bill for the $25. That's what the system is recommending as well.

This works for reporting interest but dummy 1099's should be used for 1099 DIV and for capital gains from stock. The reason being, there may be qualified dividends in the 1099 DIV that qualify for the long-term capital gain tax rate. In addition, stock or mutual fund sales may have long-term capital gains to report; thus this must be reported in the correct section of your return to treat the long-term capital gains correctly.
To report the 1099 DIV.
Click on Federal in the left-hand menu.
Select the Wages & Income tab.
Scroll down to the Investments and Savings section.
Click Start (or Revisit) next to Dividends on 1099-DIV.
Choose Manual Entry:
If the software asks "Did you receive any dividend income?", click Yes.
On the screen "Let's import your tax info," do not search for a bank. Instead, scroll down and click Enter a different way.
On the next screen, select the 1099-DIV box
To report the stock sales.
Click on Federal in the left-hand menu.
Select the Wages & Income tab.
Scroll down to the Investments and Savings section
Select Stocks, Cryptocurrency, Mutual Funds, Bonds, Other.
Now, the main obstacle to consider is the nine digit FEIN. Some users are successful, by typing 99-9999999, 00-0000000 or 99-0999999. If your program won't accept these, you will need to print and mail your return. As I said, this is okay for reporting interest that is regular income. It is not okay to report any income that is eligible for the long-term capital gain rate.
Please write back if you have additional questions.

In Ohio. In 2023, I used the standard deduction and owed money. In 2024, I used the standard deduction and received a refund. For 2025, can I remove the 1099-G from my return since by having the 1099-G it forces me to move from the free version to a paid version. However, it also reduces my refund by $69
