Thanks.   I have a question, still: I hadn't downloaded or filled out New Mexico since he has no income there. But you wrote, "NM creates a tax liability based from federal income. One day resident plus required to file federal = filing NM." Do I understand correctly that, if I'm using TurboTax, I have to download the NM form, and file with NM as well? Just asking as neither of those items are free to me, and I'd have just as soon avoided the expense of the download and filing. But if that's what I need to do, I'll do it.   wrt the apartment: Not university housing, owned by an individual and managed through one of the large Ann Arbor property management firms. I also filled out the part year resident form and it already called out the day he left the apartment and then the day he resettled in New Mexico. So I think that part is good now.

Yes. You only need it for the dependent.    If a dependent mistakenly indicated no one can claim them and causes a rejection of the parent's return, the IRS now allows the first-listed (primary) taxpayer (such as the parent) to get an IP PIN and still successfully efile and avoid having to file a return on paper.   Your dependent will need to amend their return to indicate someone else is claiming them. See this TurboTax FAQ for help with amending.   The IP Pin will change each and every year. This is an Identity Protection Pin.      You can get an Identity Protection pin here, or if you lost your IP PIN, you can go here to Retrieve IP PIN.    Here are two ways to navigate to the section to enter the 6 digit IP PIN:     Log in and open your return ("Take me to my return") Once the return is open, then go to the Federal Taxes tab. Subtab Other Tax Situations Scroll down to Other Return Info. Choose Identity Protection PIN and Start (or Revisit.) Next screen asks:  "Did you or any of your dependents get an IP PIN from the IRS for this year's taxes?" Or another way:  Open your return if not already open.  ("Take me to my return.") Once the return is open, click at the top on MY ACCOUNT, then choose TOOLS. In the Tools window choose TOPIC SEARCH. Enter IP PIN without quotes. In the selection list highlight IP PIN and click GO. Next screen asks:  "Did you or any of your dependents get an IP PIN from the IRS for this year's taxes?" There is a new procedure the IRS started last year for TY2024. It allows returns that claim dependents who have already been claimed on another taxpayer’s return to be efiled.   Since your son already claimed himself, your return is getting rejected. You can get an Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) for him, enter this on your return and re-file electronically.   Here are some good references: IR-2024-294 Age, name or SSN rejects, errors, correction procedures Protect Yourself From Tax-Related Identity Theft: Get an Identity Protection PIN

To remove an accidental IT-201-X (New York Amended Return) in TurboTax, you must uncheck the amendment box in the state interview section. Navigate to State Taxes > Edit (or Revisit) > Other Forms > Change (Amend) a Previously Filed Return, and select "Skip Amended" or uncheck the box.  One other area to look at if this does not work if the form persists, the issue may stem from an error on your W-2 entries in line 1.  Steps for TurboTax CD/Download (Desktop): Switch to Forms Mode. Locate IT-201-X in the list. Click Delete Form at the bottom of the screen @kernall-monique
If all you have is a foreign bank account with money in it, and you did not receive any payments or distributions from a foreign trust, you should uncheck that box.

Next screen asks:  "Did you or any of your dependents get an IP PIN from the IRS for this year's taxes?"     Here's how you can fix a reject:  Sign in to your account and select the Fix my return button. Follow any “fix it” instructions to update the information causing the rejection.    Note: Not all rejections will have explicit guides to fix the information. You’ll need to navigate to the program area to address the cause of the rejection.    Time-saving Tip: If what you originally entered is correct, you won't be able to e-file. There's probably a data mismatch at the government, a dependent that's already been claimed, or some other situation beyond your control that prevents your return from being e-filed. In this case, your only option would be to print and mail in your return. This article will give you instruction on how to print and mail your return.    Additional reject instruction here.
Thank you! I had searched for this a few different ways and never came up with that answer!
FYI if you need the worksheets as well, you have to "start an amendment" to a previous year's taxes before you can access the "print center" to print the extended tax return with worksheets, etc.

It's the same amount of proceeds (USD) that you were taxed in India. I believe in india, only the gross proceeds are taxed and not net proceeds after expenses.
