Same here 9Mar 26, 2026) I've tried many times over the last 2 weeks and various times getting the same message that Merrill is unavailable... I called their horrible support and the depth of their knowledge is "Clear your browsers cache and Temp IE files and try again". How elementary for tech support. As a retired 35 year I.T. Architect I'm fluent in ensuring there is nothing on my desktop preventing the API connection from TurboTax to My Merrill account. TurboTax is able to import my BofA, BNY\MELLON, Vanguard with NO problem. This Merrill company is NOT long. I contacted my Merrill Rep today and informed him "Merrill has NOTHING up on any other brokerage fund managers and I am TERMINATING my account relationship with Merrill and going 100% allocation with BNY\MELLON where I have been a client of theirs since 1980 with ZERO issues. I found a work-around. TT desktop. My situation is an IRA that had some QCDs. I received two 1099-Rs from the bank, one for the QCD amount (which contains the “Y7” distro codes and one for the rest of the normal distro (just code “7”). Sounded normal and made sense. I got the ‘double’ RMD problem with a 5329 form like others in this thread and tried all sorts of things. No luck. Even recommended answers. Could not figure out how to search this forum well, so it was no help.   Fortunately my wife had a similar situation with her Fidelity IRA (some QCD and the rest RMD). She only got ONE 1009-R. It worked fine. Totals are accurate and standard deduction. Defensible if audited, but it won't be. Not enough IRS employees!   So I delete my QCD 1099 and updated the RMD 1099, faking it out to mimic the 1099 from Fidelity. Combine amounts for Box 1 and where appropriate. Use Distro code “7”, not “7Y”. When asked, check box ‘Transferred all or part to charity’. When asked, enter your true RMD amount. When asked, select “ENTIRE Distro...to RMD…”. When asked, enter just the QCD amount. The 5329 disappeared. In the View by Form, look at the “1099R Summary” to confirm the totals look OK. I hope this helps some of you.

@GS2026  Sorry for the confusion  Point 1  prefaces with  and is only applicable when you are US person i.e. during the period you are  citizen or GC -- Resident.  Thus in your case it is post admittance as GC.   Poin2 is for the period when one  is   NRA.--- in your case for the period while you were in and earning in Canada.   Thus  for the period that you were in Canada ( and prior to becoming  a US resident ), you are NRA and report your US sourced / connected income on form 1040-NR For the rest of the year, when you were a Resident / US person, your world earnings are   reported and taxed using form 1040.   Does this make better sense ?  I am sorry for the confusion

Tried all the suggestions in here to import 2024 information.  When I tried to reopen the 2024 return, treated as a new load and requested authorization code.  Thanks to Amazon, I could still access the code.  When entered, it rejected saying it had already been used and I can no longer look at past returns.  What a joke this year.  Suggestions on product to use next year.

For a pension, it's whatever they send you. Say all of it is the RMD. If you have a RMD requirement it will ask you if it is the RMD. Say yes and enter the amount as the RMD amount. The pension doesn't need to calculate any RMD. Anything your pension pays you is considered to be the RMD. Traditional pensions automatically fulfill the rules of an RMD. So just enter the same amount in box 1 for the RMD for each 1099R.

I received a 1099-R for a life insurance death benefit payout. TurboTax used full distribution (box 1) versus taxable amount (2a). How do I get it to use only the taxable amount?

Hi Marilyn,    Thanks for your reply. The W2 that I received from the third party service company named Matrix has Box a, b, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 15 and 16 filled. Also Box 13 has 'Third-party sick pay' checked. And there was no state income tax withheld. Box 17 has $0. So I thought this income was tax free at least at state.    I don't exactly know if this sick pay is paid by CA SDI or VPDI (for which I paid the insurance). When I asked them, they didn't provide much information, they just asked me to talk to a tax expert. My tax expert informed me that I need to pay tax both to federal and state as Box 1 and 16 has income filled. So I paid along with 2024 tax returns last year.    But I called the California Franchise Tax Board (FTB) and asked the agent to check the W2, she mentioned that it should be tax free income. So I'm planning to file amendment. Could you please let me know if there will be any situation where Box 1 and 16 would be filled, but it's still tax free income?    Thank you
Yes, ASC-311 is a deduction.  See pages 71-72 of pub OR-17.   When the federal tax liability credit is phased out in accordance with Table 9 the cap for ASC-311 becomes $1500/$3000 (single/joint).

Same here -  No Windows 11, no new computer, no Turbo Tax. After decades of being a loyal Turbo Tax customer, I bought H&R Block - for less money than Turbo Tax. I did my taxes with the H&R Block software. The interface was different and I had to get used to it - not bad, just different. Am I still disgusted with Turbo Tax forcing this turmoil in the first place?   YES!
