My child qualifies for the American Opportunity Credit and is currently at $2,123. The system questionnaire asked about books & materials bought from the school directly but told me I'd be able to enter the rest elsewhere. Where can I find that? All of her books were required by the school but had to be purchased elsewhere.

Hi team, I need to file as a dual status alien for 2025. For context, I changed status from student to H1B in late 2024. Subsequently, I met the substantial presence test in 2025. Since I entered US in mid January in 2025 (after a vacation), I believe my residency starting date would be in mid January. See IRS note below. "Residency starting date under the substantial presence test If you meet the substantial presence test for a calendar year, your residency starting date is generally the first day you are present in the United States during that calendar year." Therefore, for the two weeks in Jan I was a non-resident, and need to file a dual status return. Here is my question- How to report my W2 income on 1040 and 1040 NR statement? For e.g., if my W2 income for the entire year is 1000$, then on a prorated basis, it is 41$ for NR portion. So do I report only the resident portion - 959$ on 1040 return or the whole 1000$? There is no other worldwide income. This is important because it would impact the taxes owed for individual portions. All support is highly appreciated. Thanks!

Since the IRS will not begin to accept/reject returns until January 26, you are going to be waiting in “pending” for awhile. Your return is sitting on a server, where you cannot fix it or get it back.
You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it. It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox on the corner. The IRS does not allow you to take it back.
If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etc…DO NOT change your return while it is “pending.” The changes will go nowhere.
Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return. If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.
If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund. THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and e-file or mail it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally. You will need to use a form called a 1040X.
Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself. Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed
The Form 1040X is scheduled to be available on February 19. The date is subject to change, so check on 2-19 to see if it is ready. Before that, do not change anything at all on your return.

Just filed with H&R Block over this issue, first time not using TT since 2011. Ended up about $30 cheaper, came with free expert review, and my taxes are DONE. Interface was definitely clunkier but re-entering my info didn't take me any longer than TT. Should have done this two weeks ago instead of letting TT mislead me with promises of updates, and I may have already had my refund.

“Accepted” is not the same as “approved”. TurboTax tells you the e-file was accepted if the IRS deems that there is enough information on the return for them to take it in for processing. Only the IRS can approve of the refund, which is a later stage of processing. If the IRS approves your refund they will provide a date for the refund to be issued.

Sometimes people get confused by the “summary” given by TurboTax and use the wrong amount for the federal refund. Make sure you are only using the federal refund amount, and not an amount that combined your federal and state refunds.
Your federal refund amount is on line 35a of your Form 1040

Hi, One of the new tax laws in the Big Beautiful Tax Bill that affects states like NJ is you can now deduct SALT up to $40K. I incorrectly thought the amount TurboTax would use was my actual state tax as calculated by TurboTax. Instead, it uses cash flows in 2025 (actual estimated payments within 2025). My 4rth quarter payment was in November, but TurboTax defaulted Jan. 15, 2026, as my 4rth qtr. payment. Consequently, my estimated payment for 2025 fell outside 2025 and thus not included in my SALT deduction. I changed the date for my 4rth qtr. to November 2025 and thus my estimated payment was included in my SALT deduction. When Net Investment Tax is calculated TurboTax also adjusts the amount by the proportion of "estimated tax"/AGI. This is something to keep your eye on. I never liked going past 12/31 for estimated tax and now I have some good reason! Hope this helps! Dave

The Line d on the South Carolina 1040 is for Interest income on obligations of states and political subdivisions other than South Carolina.
TurboTax will take the amounts from the federal return that are not identified as SC income for the state return. This may be from your 1099-B or Schedule K-1.

If that is the case, then why does Turbo Tax calculate that we owe North Carolina State Income Tax?
