A couple reasons could be…… You might be seeing this because the amount of Medicare taxes withheld in W2 box 6 is not exactly 1.45% of the Medicare wages in box 5, due to rounding. I read a post that said to try leaving the cents off of the Medicare tax on your W2 box 6. Box 6 has to be exactly 1.45% of box 5 or less. If it is saying you need Schedule 3 and can't use the Free Edition it might be giving you the retirement savings credit. You can say you are a student to decline the credit. You must answer Yes when asked in the Retirement Savings Contributions Credit section if your were a full-time student. The answer to this same question asked in the personal-information section is not the answer that is used.

Follow the instructions provided here:
In the self employment section and select Edit beside your business.
Next you will select to 'Add expenses for this work' then scroll to select Vehicle.
This should have the vehicle you used last year.
Be sure to save all of the data about your vehicle because if and when you trade or out right sell it there will be tax consequences on the transaction.
If for some reason the vehicle is not listed from last year, keep all prior returns for the data for the future trade or sale.

It depends. If this seems highly unusual, I suggest revisiting the input for anything state related- especially entries that had withholding.
The first place you should check is your W-2, state wages on Box 16 and state withholding on Box 17. Next, check any 1099s including 1099-Rs for pensions, retirement distributions, etc. for erroneous state withholding numbers. Do this with all income sources you had.

As long as it has SUBMITTED, you do not have to anything else right now- the IRS is processing millions of returns at the moment so the transmission time can be delayed. Keep a copy of the SUBMITTED confirmation, and be sure to check again in a few days. If you have the submitted confirmation, it is considered timely filed; however if there are any errors that need to be corrected, there is a short window to make corrections so until you get an ACCEPTED please be sure to check every few days.

No. You may not claim him as a dependent if he was 29, even if he was a full-time student.
Once someone is 24 or older, student status no longer matters.
He could be a qualifying relative, however, if:
He lived with you all year
You provided over half of his support
His gross income was below $5,200 for 2025

My wife and I are married filing jointly. She has been a full-time undergraduate student in Spring 2025 and a half-time undergraduate student in Fall 2025. She receives VA Chaper 35 benefits, which are deposited into her account directly every month (basic housing allowance). She withdrew $3,000 from her IRA at the beginning of 2025. We live together in an apartment. Her university does not offer on-campus housing, but lists the cost for housing and food as $7,500 per year in their cost of attendance overview. Can we avoid the 10% penalty for the early IRA withdrawal on grounds that it was used for education expenses? Since she was at least half-time for both spring and fall, and the amount the university lists for housing and food is greater than the withdrawal, it should be possible. I know that the VA housing allowance does not need to be reported as taxable income or need to be considered when adjusting the qualified expenses for purposes of claiming the American Opportunity Tax Credit (which we will want to claim for the expenses on her 1098-T). But I was wondering whether the VA benefits would preclude us from claiming room and board expenses to avoid the 10% penalty. I know the IRA withdrawal will be taxed as ordinary income regardless. Thank you in advance!

The software tells you not to round because it does the rounding for you. Your entry will still be in the background, but it will report the rounded numbers to the IRS.

Is the same issue others are having - a bug? It was my return from two years ago when I lived in FL that the original Special Depreciation Allowance was used. This year residence is CO, but don't think that should matter related to this. I can access the form but cannot un check the Red 'X' and choose 'N/A' to turn off the error. I think it would make sense to just turn off the error by choosing N/A because I received the special allowance already 2 years ago. Anyone have answers?
