Potential causes and fixes:
Remember, the federal and state already have your tax form, we need to toggle the program
Box 14 state tax withheld must be less than Box 16 - enter the taxable amount in box 16 (usually box 2a)
If you have a state id or state income but not both, and no state tax - delete the state section, every line blank - not a zero
If you live in NY, OH or CA and the above didn't work- completely fill in the state boxes: state, id, income, tax - including using a zero for tax paid

You don’t “input” margin interest directly on your capital‑gains forms. You claim it on Schedule A as an itemized deduction. Your capital gains on Schedule D remain unchanged. Here is how to report it.
Go to federal
Deductions and Credits
Other Deductions and Credits
Other Deductible Expenses
An FYI. Since margin interest is an itemized deduction on Schedule A, it only helps you if your total itemized deductions (mortgage interest, state taxes, charitable gifts, etc.) exceed the Standard Deduction. If you take the Standard Deduction, your margin interest provides no tax benefit, even if you had significant capital gains

I keep getting an error saying that this section needs review because the state ID cannot be the same as state ID number one, but on my form it is the same state because I have only ever lived and made money in this state.

Thank you, this is very helpful. Injecting the "rollover" terminology in 8606 instructions was baffling to me, but I get it now. Your help is greatly appreciated!

Thank you for your reply! So I am using the desktop version that I downloaded to my computer, so I am not sure if the steps are a bit different, but I think I know where you want me to change my cost basis. I just want to confirm though since the desktop version does not ask me for my cost basis. I can see my property in my Asset Summary under "Your Property Assets". Here I can click on the Edit button and that takes me to a "Review Information" screen which lists the cost I originally put in for my property. Is this where I should increase the cost basis to offset the prior years' rents that are included on the 1099-S? I originally considered changing my cost on this screen, but when I clicked on the Learn More link, I saw the following message: Changing Prior Year Asset Information The only time you should change any prior year asset information is if it does not accurately reflect the information in your prior year return, or if your business use drops to 50% or less. I wasn't sure if I should still change it based on this message. If you could confirm whether that would be the correct place, I would appreciate it!

Line 37 shows how much I owe, but doesn't give any further information. I see spaces for routing & account number information for refunds on my 1040, but nothing for a payment. Is there a place to confirm that what I entered was submitted properly through TurboTax other than waiting for it to appear in my bank account?
