This year we are itemizing our taxes for the first time and we discovered that we can include the State taxes paid in 2025 for the year 2024 as a deduction. However, we are not sure about what the best way to do this is with Turbotax. We clicked on " Estimates and Other taxes paid " in the deductions and credits summary page and then there are 3 options that might work for us: 1) 2024 state estimated taxes paid in 2025 2) 2024 refund applied to 2025 state taxes 3) Balance due on your 2024 state taxes paid in 2025 We are inclined to select 3) as we simply paid the taxes we calculated we owed for year 2024 in 2025, but we wanted to make sure. Also because we don't really understand when cases 1) and 2) would apply. For example, what does it mean estimated taxes and why would someone pay the estimated ones rather than the balance due, and isn't a refund money you receive and not give, why would someone pay a refund. Does anybody know if 3) is the correct one or if we should select a different option? Taxes we owe changed based on the selection, so we don't want to make a mistake.

Can you please cite the IRS publication or better yet U.S. Code that states this? I cannot find either. Thank you.

AmyC, Understand that by selecting 'residential real estate' option the HVAC becomes an integral part of the house and hence sets the 27.5 year depreciation schedule. However per section 111001 in OBBBA about the extension of SDA for certain property states that residential rental property is generally excluded from bonus depreciation unless specific components are reclassified. With this provision it follows that the HVAC component installed after 20-Jan-2025 if reclassified then we could use SDA. In TurboTax this accelerates the depreciation schedule as well (5 years as asset category F). Ideally TurboTax would have allowed the depreciation schedule to be selected .. say for HVAC it could be 10/15/20 year. The existing building structure of course remains under the 27.5 year schedule. Thoughts?

Your previous tax history will remain in your Intuit account, where all years are available to you when you log in. When you download your current TurboTax Online account to the desktop version, all your entries should transfer intact. You can verify this by logging into your online account while using the desktop version and comparing the two.
As you have been unable to complete your return in the browser version, despite many hours with tech support, we feel moving to the desktop version will resolve this for you. We were able to open your diagnostic copy and found no errors. This implies you will experience the same outcome by switching to TurboTax Desktop.

When I finished entering SSA 1099 information, suddenly the question pops up about Canadian Pension Information. I have no idea why, as I have no affiliation with Canada whatsoever. The program will not allow me to continue without entering this Canadian Pension information. There is nothing for me to enter. How do I get around this?

Once your return is filed, TurboTax has no control over the processing or the timing when the IRS/State releases your refund.
Here are a few FAQs to help you track your refund: When will I get my federal tax refund? How do I track my state refund? Why does Where's My Refund say "approved" but TurboTax still says "accepted"?
Why do some refunds take longer than others?
What if my IRS refund is taking longer than 21 days?

Q. I guess regardless of which option I choose an important step is to NOT declare the $1520 scholarship in the education section of my return and instead have my son report this as income on his return?
A. Yes. The simple way to do it is have him enter the 1098-T with box 1 blank and box 5 with $1520.
Q How much more complicated would it be to do Option C compared to Option B? I would lean towards the option that maximizes the return unless that option is much more complicated.
A. It should be worth the little extra effort. The key is to get TT to use $2000 for the credit (it won't do that automatically). Enter the 1099-Q on your return, exactly as received. Later, in the 1098-T section, enter the 1098-T with $10,783 in box 1 and box 5 blank (or $0). Enter R&B and books at those screens (if you don't get those screens, I have a workaround).
If you get a screen asking "amount used to claim the education credit" change it to $2000 (this screen has been mostly missing this year).
After you finish the education/1098-T section, go to the forms mode and check the student information worksheet, and verify that $2000 was entered on line 18, as the amount used to claim the credit. You can manually change/enter it there (line 18). Make the change/entry in the first column, on the left.
Note: line 17 was used, for this, prior to 2025.

If you received a "Success" message but your data hasn't appeared in TurboTax, it is likely due to recent browser security updates regarding Local Network Access.
To fix this you need to allow TurboTax to securely retrieve your data through your browser settings:
Locate the View Site Information icon (the "tune" or "lock" icon) on the far left of your address bar, just before the URL.
Find Local Network Access in the dropdown menu.
Toggle the switch to ON.
Refresh the page and attempt your import again.
What do I do when my data isn't imported into TurboTax Desktop even though it says successful import in my browser?
If permissions aren't the issue, one of the following factors may be at play:
Brokerage Delays: While most forms arrive by January 31, many brokerages delay Consolidated 1099s (like the 1099-B) until mid-February due to complex reporting requirements.
Availability: Your brokerage must specifically "release" the import file to TurboTax. If it isn’t ready, we recommend checking back.
Connection Blocks: Active VPNs or aggressive Anti-Virus software can occasionally block the import feature between your bank and TurboTax. Try disabling them temporarily or switching to a different browser.

Sounds like something got stuck. You can try these things:
Log Out Completely: Before doing anything else, click Sign Out in the TurboTax menu.
Clear Cache and Cookies: This removes old, "corrupted" data that might be confusing the website.
Use an Incognito (Private) Window: This is the most effective "quick fix" because it launches the browser without any saved history or extensions (like AdBlockers) that often interfere with tax forms.
Check Pop-up Blockers: TurboTax often opens forms (like the 1099 PDF) or payment windows in a separate pop-up. Look at the right side of your address bar for a small icon with a "red X"—click it and select "Always allow pop-ups from Intuit."
Restart the Browser: Close all open windows of your browser entirely and then reopen it.
Most TurboTax errors happen because the browser is trying to use an old "session" from a previous visit. By clearing the cache or using Incognito mode, you force the browser to establish a brand-new, secure connection with the Intuit servers.
If you still experience the issue after this, please call Customer Service and tell them you have a "block payment issues, possibly due to billing or an invalid license" and the agent should be able to help you. Here is how you reach customer service: Turbo Tax Customer Service
