I just solved this for a customer who was using TurboTax Online. He had a 1099-Q related to his son's high school tuition expenses. All of the distribution was used for qualified education expenses. We instructed him to go into Tools>Delete Forms and delete the 1099-Q and the "Person on the Retun Worksheet" for the high school son. (That misspelling was in the software--it helped us identify the right form to delete.) After that, the error cleared. He tried re-entering the 1099-Q information, and the error came up again. Since none of the distribution was taxable federally, we let him know he doesn't need to report it to the IRS, but just keep the records with his taxes. So both the 1099-Q and the worksheet giving an error had to be deleted for this to clear up.

When entering Schedule K-1 (1065), you don't need to enter any amount for Box 20 Code Z on the first page. The extended detail from your Statement A is entered on several screens that provide spaces for each detail line. Note that on any entry box, you can right-click and enter additional information in table form, which is then totaled in the box.
Continue with the interview (this may be several screens later) until you see "We see you have Section 199A information."
Check the box that applies (usually the first option - income comes from this partnership).
On the page "We need some information about your 199A income," be sure to check the first box and enter at least one type of income.
Check any other boxes that appear on Statement A and enter the related amount.
Be sure to complete the entire interview, especially the question "Do you want to provide more info about [partnership] in case it's needed later?"
You are not finished until you return to the K-1 summary page.

I was informed by Customer Service that this issue is "under investigation" and the only resolution is to file by mail. I am no longer going to purchase TurboTax.

I m an American expat living in the UK with only a UK address. when I log on to Turbo it keeps asking for a zip code - I dont have one only a UK address I need to file a U.S. tax return for self-employment and bank interest, but have no U.S. income and expect a net loss. This is my first time filing as single after a divorce, with no dependents.

The most effective way to stop TurboTax from forcing Form 2555 is to delete the form entirely. This forces the software to re-evaluate your income as taxable, which then "unlocks" the ability to use the Foreign Tax Credit.
In the left-hand menu, select Tax Tools, then Tools.
Click Delete a form.
Find Form 2555 (and any associated "Foreign Earned Income" worksheets) in the list and click Delete.
Now log out and back in again.
Re-enter your foreign income under "Less Common Income" > "Foreign Earned Income and Exclusion."
Crucial Step: When it asks, "Would you like to try and exclude your foreign earned income?", you must select NO.

This is very helpful information. Can you give a little more detail about what you do in the desktop version once you go into forms mode (how to specify that rental income is non-passive)? Thanks.

The simplest path to dealing with this nonsense, if one is - for the time being - precluded from updating their main PC to Windows 11, is to install VirtualBox then run W11 in a virtual machine. You can activate W11 for free, and as I can attest, it works just fine. While it may not be a path for the average person who knows only 'browser, email, instagram, roblox', there are plenty of guides out there for doing it. I already filed and my return was accepted, via TT in W11 virtual machine. Under other circumstances, I'd just tell people to buy a super cheap windows 11 laptop to do their taxes; unfortunately with AI vacuuming up all RAM, there is no such thing as a super cheap windows 11 laptop any more. I don't think that lack of support for W10 is going to be the true killer for me (and all the rest of us who bristle at this ridiculous, early removal of support), but instead when they just completely discontinue direct software that runs on your PC, and force use of their web version. I anticipate that'll happen within the next two years. So we're on borrowed time regardless.

I'm fairly certain an override eliminates Turbotax's guarantee for an accurate return, even if it was to correct a problem with the software. Maybe one of the TT experts can confirm.
