I think they should simply post release notes on this board or somewhere else that is accessible to users.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS AND SSI?
https://www.ssa.gov/ssi/text-over-ussi.htm
That being said.....if Social Security is your only income it is not taxable and you do not even have to file a tax return unless you had tax withheld from the benefits or have a 1095A for marketplace health insurance.
If you have OTHER income in addition to the SS, then your SS can be taxable.
Up to 85% of your Social Security benefits can be taxable on your federal tax return. There is no age limit for having to pay taxes on Social Security benefits if you have other sources of income along with the SS benefits. When you have other income such as earnings from continuing to work, investment income, pensions, etc. up to 85% of your SS can be taxable.
What confuses people about this is that before you reach full retirement age, if you continue working while drawing SS, your benefits can be reduced if you earn over a certain limit. (For 2021 it was $18,960. For 2022 it was $19,560 — for 2023 $21,240) For 2024, $22,320. For 2025 it will be $23,400; 2026 $24,480
After full retirement age, no matter how much you continue to earn, your benefits are not reduced by your earnings; your employer will still have to withhold for Social Security and Medicare. If you work as an independent contractor then you will pay self-employment tax for Social Security and Medicare.
To see how much of your Social Security was taxable, look at lines 6a and 6b of your 2025 Form 1040
https://www.irs.gov/help/ita/are-my-social-security-or-railroad-retirement-tier-i-benefits-taxable
You need to file a federal return if half your Social Security plus your other income is
Single or Head of Household $25,000
Married Filing Jointly $32,000
Married Filing Separately $0
Some additional information: There are 9 states that tax Social Security—Colorado, Connecticut,, Minnesota, Montana, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont and West Virginia These states offer varying degrees of income exemptions, but two mirror the federal tax schedule: MN and VT.

Why can't TurboTax just be a normal program? I bought TurboTax 2025 Premier for Windows and downloaded it. I'm trying to install it. Normal programs don't require administrator permissions unless they are making edits to the OS. But whatever, I ran the installer "As Administrator" from the right click menu. Still fails install because it's trying to write to a read only directory. "The installer has insufficient privileges to access this directory C:\Users\Matt\AppData\Local\Temp\Fonts\Fonts" A - Why do you need to write to ...\Fonts\Fonts at all, seems like an installer bug there in the pathing. B - Where do I go from here?

You probably answered something incorrectly in MY INFO. Go back to MY INFO, click the child’s name and go through all of the interview questions carefully and slowly. Read every screen top to bottom.
Make sure you have entered your child as a dependent in My Info, and that you have entered the child's Social Security number. Careful— do not say that your child’s SSN is not valid for employment. If your child was born in 2025 make sure you said he lived with you the whole year. There is an oddly worded question that asks if the child paid over half their own support. Say NO to that question.
If your dependent was a full-time college student, make sure you were careful on the MY INFO screen for “Uncommon situations” and that you indicated there that they were a student.

Sorry no, you can't use the Free Edition. I don't think you can use Deluxe etiher. You need Premium for Schedule D and Capital Loss Carryover. And you can't skip a year to report it.
