MY RETURN IS UNDER REVIEW
The IRS is getting more and more vigilant to prevent identity theft and fraud. People who file very early in the season are sometimes scrutinized more. Do not take it personally. TurboTax does not get any information from the IRS after they accept your return, so no one at TT knows that your refund is delayed or why. TurboTax cannot speed up the IRS for you. All you can do is wait for the IRS to finish processing your return. Watch the refund site. If the IRS wants more information from you they will request it. If they want you to verify your identity, you must follow the IRS’s instructions in order to do that. In many cases they will send you a letter—and you will have to wait for that letter.

To check on regular tax refund status via automated phone, call 800-829-1954.
Federal and state refunds come from completely separate entities. There is no rule as to which one will come in first or how long it will be between their arrival in your account.
TurboTax gives you an estimated date for receiving your refund based on a 21 day average from your date of acceptance, but it can take longer. “21 days” is not a promise from TurboTax or the IRS.
First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:
https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/
Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control. TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.
You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount (line 35a of your 2025 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:
https://www.irs.gov/refunds
To track your state refund:
https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/track-state-refund/L3jgO8PGs_US_en_US?uid=lt447ebr
If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing

.
https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/irs-refund-taking-longer-21-days/L2vRAJbdU_US_en_US?uid=lexe7lst
If you are getting earned income credit on line 27 or additional child tax credit on line 28 You are subject to the delay required by the PATH act. Do not expect your refund before early March
https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/internal-revenue-service/federal-refunds-delayed-due-path-act/L5jnQJsBi_US_en_US
Note: “Accepted” is not the same as “approved”. TurboTax tells you the e-file was accepted if the IRS deems that there is enough information on the return for them to take it in for processing. Only the IRS can approve of the refund, which is a later stage of processing. If the IRS approves your refund they will provide a date for the refund to be issued.

If you still have 2021 TurboTax installed on your PC, you can use it to prepare the 2021 Form 8606. Otherwise, it's rather trivial to prepare it manually. Either way you'll need to print and mail the form. As long as you have not made any nondeductible traditional IRA contributions for 2025 or traditional IRA distributions in 2025, you can file your 2025 tax return first. As long as you made no such contributions or distributions after 2021, that 2021 Form 8606 will become the current documentation of your basis.

You do not do anything about that. TurboTax will always show that you owed tax due, since that was the result of the return you prepared using the software. TT never knows how, when or even if you paid your tax due. Your proof that you paid is your own bank or credit card statement. The IRS will show that you paid in your online account with the IRS.

When entering your income and tax payments, they are cumulative.
If you earned $5,000 in the first quarter, and $7,000 in the second quarter it would be posted:
First quarter $5,000
Second Quarter $12,000
The fourth quarter is pre posted with your total income.

It sounds like you are in the right place, but you may have mistakenly picked the wrong choice when you first started that section. Try going back to it again and be sure to select the option to Estimate sales tax deduction using IRS tables. This will take inputs for where you lived and for how long in each state, but you will not need to enter any amounts that you spent.

This is an extension to file your tax return, not an extension to pay your taxes. You must estimate your taxes due and pay them by April 15, 2026 to avoid penalties and interest.
You can use TurboTax to e-file an extension by clicking here.

The repayment of the premium tax credit (PTC) is taken out of your Federal refund (or added to your Federal tax due).
It does not affect your CA state refund.

1) Enter the 1095-A information into Turbotax (I'm using Online premium) exactly as on the 1095-A I received. Do this on both our and my sons tax return? Yes. You will enter it exactly as received on BOTH your return and your sons return.
2) On our return state the policy was shared and put in my sons SS# and the dates we shared it (Jan - Aug). Pick a sharing percentage (the same for all three amounts) , lets say as an example 75%. When asked 'Do you have at least one dependent on your taxes who is filing a separate return?" answer Yes, CORRECT
and when asked 'What is your child's modified adjusted gross income?' input his income (~$40k). Based on this Turbotax does the math and calculates the excess/under credit NO. Do not enter your non dependent sons income. You ONLY enter the income of those who are in your tax family or could be. Since he cannot be, you do not enter his income.
3) Do exactly the same on my sons tax return except using 25%? and he answer no when asked 'Do you have at least one dependent on your taxes who is filing a separate return" ? Correct.
4) Regarding the sharing percentages. I can't find any hard and fast rules on how to calculate this. SOme suggest any combination is OK as long as they total to 100% Seems like 75/25 would be logical in this situation but is that right/OK? Assuming what I've discussed above is correct, I played around with some what-if scenarios with different percentages and for example with a us/son split of 0/100 out total combined refund between is a crazy high number which seems implausible. 50/50 or 75/25 (which seem more reasonable) seem to yield the best overall numbers which seem plausible. So is there guidance on what % are reasonable and acceptable. Whatever amount you agree on is acceptable as long as it adds up to 100%. So it can be 75/25 or 100/0. It is entirely up to what you and your son agree on. A lot of times since the credit was based on the parents income, the parent will claim 100% and the child will claim 0%.

No. You don't need to file an amended return to change the order of the spouses on a joint return.
The order of the names of spouses on a tax return does affect taxes on the return. However, it is highly recommended to keep the same order of the spouses year after year, as changing it may significantly delay the processing of your return.
