I did my return last week and I have my cousin using my laptop using a second account to prepare his return. Why is TT asking for update all the times as million of people have already submitted their return when he first started. I told him to skip the update and he was able to finish his return. But when he was submitting, he got this Failed Validation. What the hell is TT wants? What the fxxx they want? I may have to switch to HR Block next year>

Interaction of Clergy housing allowance exclusion and measure of modified AGI for 'Net Investment Income Tax'. I believe TurboTax software has an error as it includes the housing allowance received by a member of the clergy in the measure of Modified AGI on line 13 of Form 8960 for purpose of the income threshold in determining whether a taxpayer is subject to the Net Investment Income Tax.

Let's get the S to open, then it should pick up your birthdate. Follow these steps:
Open your return to DC
Sch S is also used for the pension and annuity exclusion along with many other things.
Go back in and look for Pension and Annuity Exclusion.
You may have an exclusion that needs to be entered. If not, enter $1 just to make the form exist.
Look at your forms and verify Sch S exists now.
Check to see if you have the increased deduction for seniors.
If you truly have no pension or annuity deduction, remove the $1 and then check things again.

RMD is the minimum amount you must withdraw from a 401k, IRA, or similar plan, based on your age and the account balance. Your plan can tell you what your RMD was for 2025. Some people only withdraw exactly the amount of their RMD, some people withdraw more.
If you have a defined pension, the entire amount is considered to be the RMD.

This line entry, even though it is 0, should not even show up, or be on the summary. And now that it is, it will load on next years, as a entry we used and/or selected (even though we did not). It needs to go away, not just be 0. This is a bug, and needs to be corrected. If TT even cares.

So, I click to order and the system begins processing my order. Then says it is having trouble verifying the credit card. The card is valid and I tried with different cards. I checked my CC onlinr info - the transaction is entering and then reversed each time I try. Any suggesions?

Were they 18 years old at the end of 2025? If so, the student check box would not appear as they would still qualify as your dependent even if they weren't a student as long as they lived with you for more than 6 months and did not provide over half of their own support and otherwise qualify as a qualifying child.
If they are over 18, go back to the personal info section and select the pencil next to the one that is not correct. Walk back through and double check the answers. In this section, you will be able to select that they are a student.

Just to close the loop on this topic, the IRS does says that you can be "considered unmarried" if you are "Legally separated from your spouse under a divorce or separate maintenance decree."
The problem is that I have never seen a situation where this actually applies. The Tax Court has ruled that any such decree must be final. That means that a separation agreement, even with maintenance or alimony, doesn't allow you to file as single because it is not final. Likewise, if you have a separation agreement and state laws says that you could reconcile, then the decree is not legally final, even if reconciliation is not likely. The Tax Court noted that New York State has an old separation law on the books but no one actually uses it any more because they would prefer to just get a divorce rather than have a final, lifelong separation. So if you wanted to file single, you would need to talk to a really good attorney first.
But since you have dependents, head of household is much better than single and does not require any special rules or analysis.

My wife died in March 2024 so was due WEP recovery for those three months. In 2025 I received her WEP payment. I received 2 SSA-1099SM forms, one for me and one for the WEP recovery. I'm having trouble understanding how to enter this for the 2025 tax year. Part of the problem is that no where on the SSA-1099SM form does it state that this is a WEP reimbursement or that it is for 2024. All I have is my wife's SSN in Box 8 Claim Number. Below is the procedure I have been able to understand: 1. Enter into the net benefits section the sum of both SSA-1099SM forms. 2. Respond Yes to "Did you receive any lump-sum payments?" 3. Enter 2024 4. Next, enter the amount of the lump-sum payment for 2024 5. The next part is where the confusion comes in. Looking at my 2024 form. In 2024 I also had 2 SSA-1099SM forms. One was my regular benefit and the other was for a recovered disbursement that they had taken back then sent back to me months later. What amount am I to enter in to this question, the sum of both 2024 forms or just mine alone? I've tried it both ways and the results are the same. 6. Selected Married Filing Jointly 7. Looked at 2024 return and filled in adjusted gross income for 2024 and Taxable Social Security benefits for 2024 8. No adjustments on the next panel 9. Done. Did I navigate this correctly? Again there was no indication on the SSA-1099SM what the lump sum was for.
