Thanks for replying. Yes, there is about $900 Indiana local county tax which is in addition to the indiana state tax $1875. That county tax is correct, and Illinois state paid tax should cover Indiana state tax as credit but only pay Indiana county tax. I used other software before and it did exactly like this, that is why this year when I switched to TurboTax, I was confused.

If you were in school at any time in the months of January thru May. you are classified as a full time student under the Qualifying Child rules. But you must also be under the age of 24 in 2025 and you could not have provided over one-half of your own support to be a dependent.
To be a Qualifying Child -
1. The child must be your son, daughter, stepchild, foster child, brother, sister, half brother, half sister, stepbrother, stepsister, or a descendant of any of them. 2. The child must be (a) under age 19 at the end of the year, (b) under age 24 at the end of the year and a full-time student or (c) any age and permanently and totally disabled. 3. The child must have lived with you for more than half of the year. Temporary absences while away at college are considered living with you. 4. The child must not have provided more than half of his or her own support for the year. 5. If the child meets the rules to be a qualifying child of more than one person, you must be the person entitled to claim the child as a qualifying child. 6. The child must be a U.S. citizen or U.S., Canada or Mexico resident for some portion of the year. 7. The child must be younger than you unless disabled.

You should enter this as taxable dividend income on your tax return.
You should be annoyed at having to do it. The transfer agents screwed this up and the money was earned during the transfer instead of inside your IRA like it was supposed to. But it did earn the money while it was outside your account. And your IRA doesn't have a social security number or EIN to issue the 1099 to. So Computershare did what they had to do and sent it to you.
Pay the taxes on it, add it to the basis in the IRA and call it a day.

I cannot perform any of the suggestions. This is because once I am asked, “ do you have any educational expenses? And I click yes I immediately get an error message - “sorry we don’t support this. we currently don’t support educational expenses for X people.” there’s clearly a glitch in the software, and my resolution is to use a different company to prepare my taxes this year.

Thanks for the reply. Federal return is handling the my Civil Service retirement properly, but it won't transfer as Civil Service Retirement to Oklahoma State return. Instead of putting the amount in the Civil Service category it puts it in the Government category with the $10,000 deduction. It is CSRS pension, so it should be in the Civil Service category with and 100% deduction. I entered it as Civil Service in the Federal part of the program and verified that it is entered as Civil Service in the State review, but it does't put it in Civil Service in the summary.

Schwab account shows message that the forms are available for download but have not been able to download either my own personal or kids on 2/13. Turbo tax system says they were connected and downloaded the information but when you go back to the tax forms no data is present. Turbo tax rep says try again in a week. Never had an issue over years once Schwab says they are available

Each return needs its own email, account and user ID. If you use the same account and user ID for a second return, the second one overwrites the first return and it is lost forever.

To bypass the EIN requirement, you have to tell the software that you qualify for a specific IRS exception.
In the 1098-T section, when asked "Did you get a 1098-T?", select No.
On the very next screen, it should ask if you qualify for an exception. Select Yes.
Select the reason: "My school is not required to send me a 1098-T" (this is true for most foreign schools).
On the school information page, look for a small link or checkbox that says "I can't find the ID number" or "Foreign Address." Selecting "Foreign Address" in the dropdown for the state/country often relaxes the strict EIN validation in the background.
You cannot claim the American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC) for a foreign school without an EIN. Period. The IRS requires a valid EIN for the AOTC.
You must tell TurboTax you are seeking the Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC) instead.
To force this, when asked about the student's status, you can say they have already finished 4 years of college (even if they haven't). This shifts the software from AOTC to LLC , which is much more lenient about the EIN.
If you’ve checked the "Foreign Address" box and the "Exception" box and it still won't let you pass the "Review" stage, some users have success using a placeholder.
Placeholder: Enter 98-0000000 or 00-0000000.
Warning: While this might let you finish the software, it carries a risk of the IRS rejecting the e-file later. If the e-file is rejected, you will have to print and mail your return.

Are you referring to the $6,000 extra senior deduction that was passed last year?
If you are age 65 or older and meet the requirement, the additional deduction is automatically added on your federal tax return.
Standard deductions for 2025
Single - $15.750 add $2,000 if age 65 or older Married Filing Separately - $15,750 add $1,600 if age 65 or older Married Filing Jointly - $31,500 add $1,600 for each spouse age 65 or older Head of Household - $23,625 add $2,000 if age 65 or older
New Bonus Standard Deduction (OBBB): An additional $6,000 deduction for taxpayers 65 and older. This is per eligible individual, meaning a married couple both over 65 could get $12,000. Important: This bonus deduction is temporary, lasting from 2025 through 2028. Income limitations: It phases out for taxpayers with modified adjusted gross income over $75,000 for single filers and $150,000 for joint filers.
The amount is calculated on Schedule 1-A, Part V, with that amount flowing to Form 1040 Line 13b
Look at your Form 1040 -
You can view your Form 1040 plus Schedules 1, 2 and 3 at any time using the online editions. Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.
