Thank you for responding.   I’m not willing to provide my file but i still encourage you to have your team look at this issue. It is very straightforward.   The law says that as long as you pay 100% of the amount you owed for the previous year’s taxes (110% if you were over a certain dollar threshold) then you do not owe a penalty. TurboTax handled this properly for the Federal portion of my return but not for the state of California. .Specifically the California Form 5808, Part II, Line 5 number should be calculated to be either 100% or 110% of last year’s amount owed. TurboTax seems to properly reference the correct data shown to me on Line 2 of the “California Carryover Worksheet for 2025”. By “properly reference” I mean that if I double click on Line 5 of Form 5808 it takes me to Line 2 of the worksheet. And the worksheet correctly shows my 2024 California tax. But somehow the TurboTax calculated amount on Line 5 of form 5808 is wildly off. I hope TurboTax is able to correct this error and save its users a lot of, money, trouble, and goodwill.

What does this mean?  What TT says your 2026 estimated payments should be?   I would go to Forms and just look at "Form 1040ES 1", "1040ES 2", etc. Or preview/print/save to PDF your return and select "1040ES: Estimated Tax Voucher 1",  through 4 in the "Forms to Review" or "Specific Forms" selection.   You can also type "see next year estimated payments" in the Search function and select "can TT calculate next year's federal estimated taxes" - it give you instructions on how to find it in the program.   Fwiw, I find these estimates to be ludicrous and never pay attention to them.

@trapezewdc  As I read the instructions, a spouse's name and tax number (SSN or ITIN) is not required for HOH status, regardless of whether the spouse is a citizen or an NRA.  The instructions talk about adding the spouse's tax number for MFS status, but not HOH.  You can see the form 1040 instructions here. https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040gi.pdf   If the. spouse's tax number is being enforced by Turbotax, it could be that the IRS has implemented a new rule in their e-filing system that is not reflected in the printed instructions, or it could be that Turbotax is requesting additional information outside the official instructions.  I have no access to anyone in the company.   I would start by deleting your spouse's information entirely.  You may need to change your status to MFS or MFJ, then go to the list of people in the personal information section and delete your spouse.  Then change to single, and run the error check.  (It might tell you to try HOH.)  Then change back to HOH.  I don't believe you should be asked for your spouse's name when filing HOH, but it might be stuck in there because you started off using a married status.  If you are asked for a spouse's name when filing HOH, that is a program change from the past.  It might be possible to send it for investigation to find out if it is a bug or a new requirement.

Yes, if you are taking the Standard Deduction, you should enter the "full amount" of your mortgage interest in that specific "excess" field within the Home Office interview.   In this case, “Excess Mortgage Interest” refers to any interest that isn’t being deducted on Schedule A. Since you aren’t itemizing, all of your personal portion counts as excess, or non-deductible, personal interest. When you enter the full amount, TurboTax will:   Calculate the Business Use % (e.g., 10%) and deduct that portion on Schedule C.  Take the remaining Personal Use % (90%) and effectively "ignore" it because it knows you aren't itemizing.

Yes, you can begin your taxes for free; ask the Community experts questions to help you; and also upgrade to an expert for questions or a final review, and even allow a TurboTax Expert Assist to complete your tax return(s) for you.   Expert Assistance costs usually ranges from $39 to $159+ for federal returns, plus additional fees for state returns (usually around $49–$64).  A CPA or Enrolled Agent (EA) will provide you with unlimited, on-demand video or phone sessions while you work on your tax return yourself.   The cost for Expert Full Service often starts at $89–$150+ depending on your complexity and current promotions.  Your dedicated expert will prepare, sign, and file your return for you.   For TurboTax Desktop Users (CD/Download), you can get "Unlimited Live Expert Advice" add-on for about $60.   You can post questions on the TurboTax Community for free, where experts and experienced users will help you.

It makes no sense that TurboTax's text says January 1, 2026, because for the purpose of suggesting estimated tax payments for 2026 what matters is your age on December 31, 2026.  This is probably one of the many inappropriate wording changes that TurboTax has made as it is being migrated to a new implementation of the step-by-step mode user interface.  They seem to be changing wording just for the sake of changing the wording, without regard to the reason behind the original wording.

@ItsMe-Jeremy Since you e-filed the original tax return you will be able to e-file the 2025 amended tax return, Form 1040-X, at any time on or before October 15, 2026.
