When you are married, you can file joint or separate. You do not meet the "lived apart" for the last 6 months for any other status. NC follows federal so whichever status you file for the federal, you will use the same status for NC state. Based on the protection order alone, I recommend MFS to keep your finances and your spouse's finances separated. Otherwise, any refund would come to both of you.   References: What's my tax filing status (single, married, or other)? Couples who file separately typically get fewer tax benefits. ‌

Actually, reading between the lines it may not even be 13-Feb. The post I read says: "We anticipate the depreciation calculations within the software should be updated AFTER February 13, 2026." Still no real commitment. I'm astounded that we all have to wait until 13-February. I sure hope it's not "AFTER".

Yes, this is foreign-sourced income. Here is how you will complete reporting the Foreign Tax Credit. I assume you have already reported this as income because we addressed that earlier. Now you need to fill form 1116 to receive your credit.    TurboTax doesn't save this portion into the Form 1116 like it does for Dividends and interest, so you need to manually record this in the Foreign Tax Credit section.   As you navigate through the foreign tax credit section, your dividend and interest information is already reported. You need to report the sale of the house and report the gross amount of the proceeds..   Go to Deductions & Credits  Estimates and Other Taxes Paid > Foreign Tax Credit. Follow the prompts  It will first ask you to report the income for the dividends and interest. In this case, you just need to check a box next to the dividends and interest to record the income. After this is done.  There should be two country summary screens. When you get to country summary screen, select edit next to the country XX that reported the interest.  Here it will ask you to report other Gross income XXX.  You will report the Gross proceeds from the sale. Don't enter anything for expenses. Continue through the screen until it asks you to enter foreign taxes. Here you will enter foreign taxes on other income. Finish out the interview screen until you are done.

I moved from CT to NJ and was unable to transfer my pension to a new one so I just withdrew the whole amount and used it. I have 10% put to the side, but I don’t know if I am able to use the 10% now that I have filed my taxes or if I should still hold onto it.

@Sue52 , a person can file a return at any time even if they are not required to.  However, if he is not required to, and is not filing just for a refund, the IRS instructions for 8962 state you shouldn't include his income.  You only include a dependent’s income if that dependent is required to file a federal tax return. It is expected that income estimates will vary from actual amounts reported, and that is ok.     I have researched this further, and @Hal_Al's research is correct.  I have updated my response above, and will copy here for you:   No, he is not required to file a tax return.  For the purposes of filing Form 1040, scholarships are considered unearned income (See: Pub 501).  California doesn't require him to file a return either (Dependent filing requirement).    In this case, the Kiddie Tax doesn't apply.  While the Kiddie Tax typically applies to children (under 18, or under 24 if a full-time student) who have more than $2,700 in unearned income, he is not required to file a 1040.  See What is IRS Form 8615: Tax for Certain Children Who Have Unearned Income for more information on the Kiddie Tax.   No, his income is not be included in the reconciliation.  The IRS instructions for 8962 state you don't include a dependent’s income if that dependent is not required to file a federal tax return.
It won’t let me file without answering but I can’t click nothing

During error check, I'm receiving an error to uncheck the box for Qualified Prop 100% & 50% because it should be blank, but the software will not let me uncheck it.  I've tried both in step by step and in forms.  This is holding me up from e-filing.  How do I fix this?
