In the context of oil, gas, or mineral royalties, a negative production tax is essentially a tax refund or an overpayment adjustment from a prior period.  Because the tax paid was deducted in a previous year, you must report it as income in the year you receive the adjustment.  You can add to Box 2 Royalties as a positive number, or add as additional income in the Schedule E section of Turbotax.

TurboTax calculates the necessary estimated tax payments based on the assumption that tax withholding and, for state tax, state of residence will be unchanged and income will not decrease from one year to the next.  If those assumptions are correct, the estimated tax payment vouchers produced by TurboTax show the minimum quarterly amounts the must be paid to qualify for the the safe harbor of paying 110% of last year's Maryland tax liability.   In your son's case, the penalty and interest imposed by Maryland indicates that his tax withholding was insufficient to qualify for the safe harbor of paying at least 110% of the previous year's tax liability, for the safe harbor of tax withholding totaling at least 90% of the current-year tax liability or for the safe harbor of having a balance due of $500 or less.   To avoid the need to make state estimated tax payments in the future, he likely needs to have his employer increase his state tax withholding.

I concur 100% with @skramblr.   @Reily-Pist:   You're deluding yourself into believing things that simply aren't true; no one wants to make a "copy of your hard drive" and you can either turn off (disable) or uninstall features in Windows 11 that either upload data to the cloud OR allow for reversion to a different date (i.e., recall data that you deleted).    You're also deluding yourself with respect to taking output you're getting from an AI bot (ChatGPT) as gospel. Currently, AI makes a LOT of mistakes and what's happening when you use AI right now for YOUR purposes is you're just getting a conglomeration of data the bot retrieves from everything on the internet (and we know a LOT of what gets plastered on the internet is not entirely accurate).

don't know if you are using online or desktop because each requires a separate approach. With desktop, you can go into forms mode. Go to the 8949 where the trades are reported and enter O (the letter)  in the adjustment code column for each of those trades. Then in the adjustment amount column you'll need to enter either a positive or negative amount to zero out the reported gain or loss. I cannot provide guidance for online versions.

Just to confirm, since 38-2538297 is the EIN for the Michigan Bureau of Workers and Unemployment Compensation - KimTreadway, you received unemployment pay from MI and that is the payer, correct? Otherwise, different details would apply.   Make sure you have the state entered for box 10a, as well.  In your response, you have a period after the first 2 digits, make sure you do not use a period when typing into the TurboTax menu.  Finally, this workaround would not apply if your box 11 is empty; your 1099-G does have a value in box 11, correct?  TurboTax will not allow you to proceed without 10a, 10b, and 11 filled in if there is a value entered into any one of those boxes.

@WanderingEarthMagnet  What you describe overriding is not form 1099-Q.  It's the 1099-Q worksheet.  That is not sent to the IRS.  When the box 1 amount on form 1099-Q is fully covered by expenses, TurboTax will enter nothing about the 1099-Q on any actual tax forms (TT does not inform the IRS that your distribution was fully covered by expenses).  It just doesn't report anything. There is no more risk doing nothing than going thru the effort to get TT to tell you what you already know.      The 1099-Q is  only an informational document. The numbers on it are not required to be entered onto your (or your student's) tax return. The interview is complicated and it's easy to make mistakes. Avoid it if you can and you probably can.  You can just not report the 1099-Q, at all, if your student-beneficiary has sufficient educational expenses, including room & board (even if he lives at home) to cover the distribution. When the box 1 amount on form 1099-Q is fully covered by expenses, TurboTax will enter nothing about the 1099-Q on the actual tax forms. But, it will prepare a 1099-Q worksheet for your records (you don’t need it). You would still have to do the math to see if there were enough expenses left over for you to claim the tuition credit. You also cannot count expenses that were paid by tax free scholarships. References: On form 1099-Q, instructions to the recipient reads: "Nontaxable distributions from CESAs and QTPs are not required to be reported on your income tax return. You must determine the taxability of any distribution."  IRS Pub 970 states: “Generally, distributions are tax free if they aren't more than the beneficiary's AQEE for the year. Don't report tax-free distributions (including qualifying rollovers) on your tax return”. "IRS Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Education states: If the entire 1099-Q went to qualified expenses, room and board, tuition, etc; then, you do not need to enter the form."
