It would not be taxable if it was a refund of property taxes that you paid previously and you had not deducted those taxes on your tax return. Otherwise, it would be taxable to the extent you got a financial or tax benefit from the rebate.   You enter the Form 1099-NEC in the Wages and Income section, then Other Common Income, then Form 1099-NEC. Indicate that you did not have a profit motive for receiving the money, it is not related to your job, and you only received the funds in 2025 to avoid having the income treated as self-employment income. If the income is not taxable, do the following to back it out of your return:   1. From the Federal menu in TurboTax find Wages and Income  2. Find Less Common Income 3. Choose Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C 4. Choose Other Reportable Income 5. Enter a description of the income and the adjustment as a negative number   [Edited 2/5/26 at 9:42 AM PST] @savazpour02

@Opus 17 wrote: It's possible that Merrill no longer participates, in which case the official list needs updating.  But that would seem odd since Bank of America and Merrill Trust Accounts are still listed.  I flagged it for investigation, but if you are in a hurry, you will still need to enter your 1099 information manually.   Just asking for a "friend" since I don't use the s/w anyway. However, it would be highly unusual for Merrill to not participate given (a) the fact that they have participated with import in the past with TurboTax and other tax prep s/w firms, (b) as you stated, other BOA and Merrill accounts are listed, and (c) I happen to personally know clients with Merrill Edge accounts that have not just a few or a few dozen, but hundreds of trades, including wash sales and basis unknown transactions (they would be relegated to printing and mailing their returns in some fashion).   On the other hand, it's really early to make assumptions, I believe. Merrill and a few others won't be issuing their 1099-Bs for a LOT of clients until February 15th (or later). Last year, if I recall, the likes of E*Trade, Merrill, Ameritrade (Schwab), and a few others didn't get their 1099-Bs out in an import-type format until almost the end of the month.

In the Oregon State Interview, you can adjust your wages reported on your Federal return for the OR portion.  Look for a screen titled 'Here's the Income that Oregon Handles Differently' and choose 'Done with Income' at the bottom.     The next screen will show your Federal wages and a box to enter the Oregon amount, titled 'Oregon Source Income and Adjustments'.  Be sure to save a record of the calculations you used to arrive at your two-day a week amount.   Here's more info on How to File a Non-Resident State Return.       @WAresidentORhybridwork    [Edited 2/6/2026 | 6:02 pm]

Since the 2023 excess was not removed in a timely fashion, the 1099-SA should have a distribution code of '1', not '2'. However, it is difficult for HSA custodians to get this right, so if you tell them that this was a distribution for an excess, they take your word for it and put a '2' in the distribution code even when this is not right for a late excess distribution.   Although we normally discourage taxpayers from changing data on forms, you won't be able to get the correct results unless you do.   When you enter the 1099-SA, change the distribution code to '1'. In the interview, be sure to tell TurboTax that this distribution was NOT for qualified medical expenses. This will have three effects: 1. The amount of the distribution will be added to your taxable income. 2. An amount equal to 20% of this distribution will be added to line 17c, Schedule 2 (1040). 3. This will cut off the excess from 2023 so no more penalties.   It is important for you to document what you did and why and save it with the paper copy of your tax return (you keep one, don't you?), in case the IRS ever writes you a letter asking about this.
This worked for me.  I opened 2024, installed updates and closed the app.  Then reopened 2025 and was able to transfer last' years file.  Good luck

Yes, this would be correct.  The reason TurboTax is saying you have an excess is because his contributions are prorated based on the months he was alive.  So since he passed away in April, and was over 55, his prorated amount would be $3,183.33.  To calculate this you would take the Family Contribution limit of $8,550+ the $1,000 catch up for a total of $9,550.  Since he was only eligible for 4 out of 12 months, you would multiple that $9,550 by 4/12 for a total of $3,183.33.  That would be HIS contribution limit for 2025.  Since he contributed $3,960 he has an excess contribution of $777 (3,960-3,183)   Form 8889 instructions says "If you were not an eligible individual on the first day of the last month of your tax year, use the Line 3 Limitation Chart and Worksheet (in these instructions) to determine the amount to enter on line 3. (See (6) in this list.)"   Since he was not eligible on the last day of the tax year, the limitations are being applied.  After he passed away, the HSA was treated as yours.  So your contributions would have been ok for the full amount as long as you were still eligible on the first day of the last month of the tax year.
