When filling out the IRA 1099-R information, toward the bottom, it gives you some choices under the title: Inherited IRA or Type of IRA." I have an IRA which is my own, and did not inherit. If I choose the option of "Treat as recipient's own (This is treated as a rollover)," I end up paying less taxes. I can't see anywhere in Turbo Tax where it asks if an IRA was inherited, or did I miss that? Would IRS flag my return if I claimed to have an inherited IRA, when in fact, I did not? Thx

Had this same issue! I spent an hour waiting for cx service to get transferred to a tax expert. The hold was like 2 hours so I set it for a call back, but never got one. I have made LESS money this year than I have my previous years. Never at any point have I gotten anything about this stupid 8959 form. I thought maybe it was a glitch? I've done it from my phone, from a tablet, on wifi, off wifi, starting over, manually imputting my W2's, scanning my W2's. Told me to upgrade every. Time. So I ended up filing with a different company this year - despite desperately wanting to use TurboTax. I attempted two different companies - getting to the end of filing before payment just to see if they gave me an issue with this form. Absolutely not. I got my state and federal done for free with FreeTaxUSA. Already approved. I have a feeling this message is TurboTax's attempt to screw over the common person who doesn't know anything about taxes and doesn't know how to research - just giving into paying to get it done. I doubt I will be using TurboTax moving forward unfortunately. (FreeTaxUSA does state and federal for free if you meet very easy requirements)

I'm trying to help and aunt with her taxes and I'm not sure about this topic. She has a son who is above 26 living with her. She provides for everything and doesn't charge him rent. He didn't work at all the previous year and he is not in school. Can he be claimed as a dependent? If she claims him as a dependent, would he have to file even though he wasn't employed?

We cannot see your screen, your return or your account. Have you entered ALL of your 2025 information? All your income, etc.? Many tax documents that you need do not arrive until late January or even February, so maybe you do not have it all there yet.
There are a lot of variables that affect your refund or tax due including how much you earned, how much tax you had withheld, your filing status, the number of dependents you claim, your deductions and credits, etc. You may have lost Earned Income Credit or the Child Tax Credit— did a child turn 17? If you received the EIC last year, remember that changes in the amount you earn have a big effect on the amount of EIC you can get. (Sometimes earning more money means less EIC) Are you 65 or older ? If so, your standard deduction is higher. Everyone has a higher standard deduction now so it is harder to use itemized deductions.
And of course, always check your own data entries, looking for errors such as misplaced decimals or extra zeros.

Dependents are entered or edited/deleted in MY INFO.
Make sure you have entered your child as a dependent in My Info, and that you have entered the child's Social Security number. Careful— do not say that your child’s SSN is not valid for employment. If your child was born in 2025 make sure you said he lived with you the whole year. There is an oddly worded question that asks if the child paid over half their own support. Say NO to that question.
If your dependent was a full-time college student, make sure you were careful on the MY INFO screen for “Uncommon situations” and that you indicated there that they were a student.

You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it. It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox on the corner. The IRS does not allow you to take it back.
If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etc…DO NOT change your return while it is “pending.” The changes will go nowhere.
Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return. If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.
If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund. THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and e-file or mail it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally. You will need to use a form called a 1040X.
Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself. Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed
The Form 1040X you need becomes available in late February, But wait until your return has been processed.

If your TurboTax fees are higher than expected, you can reduce them by removing add-ons (BEFORE you e-file) :
Remove Premium Services
Remove MAX Defend & Restore
Remove a state
Remove PLUS Help & Support
Remove Pay With Your Refund
No one in the user forum can resolve a billing issue. If you have a question about your TurboTax fees or billing, make sure you use the word “billing” in your request for help. Do not use the word “refund.”

Did you e-file? Did you go through all three steps of the FILE section and click a big orange button that said “Transmit my returns now?”
When you e-file your return you will get two emails from TurboTax. The first one will say your return has been transmitted; the second one will tell you the IRS has accepted or rejected your federal e-file. If you filed a state return, there will be a third email (usually a day or two later) that tells you if the state e-file was accepted or rejected.
Check your e-file status:

You pay income tax to the state you live in. You do not mention when you moved to AZ. If you moved at some time during 2025, you need to prepare part year returns for each of those states. Going forward, if you live in AZ now, you will only pay AZ state tax.

E-filing is closed for 2024----you have to file it by mail. Use a mailing service that will track it like certified mail so you will know it was received because you will have a long wait.
Do not expect quick results from amending. It can take four months or more for the IRS to process an amended return.
You can watch for information here:
