You cannot change the tax year. The current online program is for 2025 only. Only a 2025 return can be prepared online and only a 2025 return can be e-filed.
Online preparation and e-filing for 2022, 2023, and 2024 is permanently closed.
Note: The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac. It cannot be used on a mobile device.
To file a return for a prior tax year
If you need to prepare a return for 2022, 2023, or 2024 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign, and mail the return(s)
https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/
You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.
Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

The “senior deduction” is added automatically by the software based on the date of birth and filing status you entered into MY INFO. You do not need to take any extra steps to enter it. (And…the new senior deduction has nothing to do with whether you are getting Social Security)
2025 STANDARD DEDUCTION AMOUNTS
SINGLE $15,750 (65 or older/legally blind + $2000)
MARRIED FILING SEPARATELY $15,750 (65 or older/legally blind +1600)
MARRIED FILING JOINTLY $31,500 (65 or older/legally blind + $1600)
HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD $23,625 (65 or older/legally blind + $2000)
For 2025 through 2028 there is an extra deduction amount of up to $6000 per individual 65 or older filing Single, MFJ, or HOH which is phased out for taxpayers with modified adjusted gross income over $75,000 for single filers and $150,000 for joint filers.
The $6,000 senior deduction will be calculated on 1040 Schedule 1-A page 2 Part V Enhanced Deduction for Seniors which goes to 1040 line 13b. It is separate and in addition to the Standard Deduction or your Itemized Deductions on 1040 line 12e. Turbo Tax automatically includes it.

You could also try getting the 2021 forms from the state to prepare by hand and mail in. You will need information from your q2021 federal return.

The amounts come from Form 1095-A (Affordable Care Act/Obamacare).
You can get the form https://www.healthcare.gov/login
There are no %s unless you are doing a policy allocation. A policy allocation means that at least one person on the 1095-A is not being claimed on your tax return. This can occur when both spouses are covered under a plan but choose to file separate returns, or when a dependent is listed when applying, but is not included on your return when filing

Software is no longer available from TurboTax to prepare a 2021 return, nor would it be supported or provided with updates even if you find it on eBay etc. Any refund from tax year 2021 has already been forfeited but if you owe tax due, you owe with late filing penalties and interest.
Seek local paid tax help or google other tax software that might still provide 2021 software. And...the return can only be filed by mail.

My son is a an out of state student at Virginia Tech and worked part-time on campus last summer. Before he started working, he mistakenly claimed to be exempt from Virginia state income tax for 2025. Therefore, no VA state taxes were deducted from his paychecks. His income was only around $1900 for the summer since most of his work was unpaid. Is there any action needed to correct this situation, we believe he should not have claimed to be exempt before he started working, and would like to resolve any issues that may later arise.

What do you think Schedule R has to do with income you are receiving from CA? Schedule R is used for a credit for the elderly and disabled.
There is a federal credit for the Elderly and Disabled which is so small that very few people benefit from it—-it has not been updated/increased by Congress for decades.

thank you! I spoke with the custodian and they told me the same. I am confused now as to how turbotax filled in my 8606 form in the 2024 tax return. I have USD 7000 in lines 1,3,14. All other lines are blank. Is that good for my situation or did I mess it up and need to send IRS some update? (I had pre tax money in Traditional IRA before the USD 7000 after tax contribution for 2024, and I still have them)

MY RETURN IS IN PENDING—what does that mean?
You will not get any information from the IRS refund site while your return is in pending. The IRS does not have your return yet.
Did you e-file? Did you click that big orange button that said “Transmit my returns now?” If so, your return is now in “pending” on a server. Do not try to change anything while your return is in pending. On January 26 the IRS will begin to accept/reject e-files. The IRS accepts a FEW returns in test batches ahead of January 26—-but that is very random. Watch your emails—including your spam folder—for the notice about whether your e-file has been accepted or rejected. If your return is rejected you will be able to make corrections before re-filing. If the return you e-filed is accepted you will have to wait until it has been fully processed and then amend it to fix any mistakes or omissions. It has been taking the IRS four to six months—sometimes longer—to process amended returns. If you e-filed your state return there will be another email later that tells you if the state was accepted or rejected.
WARNING: Do not try to change anything on your return while it is pending.
