You cannot change the tax year.   The current online program is for 2025 only.   Only a 2025 return can be prepared online and only a 2025 return can be e-filed.   Online preparation and e-filing for 2022, 2023, and  2024 is permanently closed. Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.   To file a return for a prior tax year  If you need to prepare a return for 2022, 2023, or 2024  you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s) https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/ You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.   Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.   https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/state-taxes/contact-state-department-revenue/L9qVToi02_US_en_US?uid=m6e06um0   When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.   Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

The problem stems from importing your TT Desktop previous years tax files into the new year TT online program as been confirmed by previous years posts regarding this problem.

I have only utter disgust for this company, Intuit.   Intuit seems to be adamant that people use their online interface  to input their tax information rather than downloading and using a desktop product. I had to call support to find the purchase page, after 30 minutes of utter frustration...Sylvia from the help desk emailed a link, but did not help me to navigate there from the home page.. Searching found the download page, but no way did it get me to the purchase a license page.      Even then, Intuit tried to bait and switch me to buy the online service. There is NO way I want my sensitive financial information on some cloud server, only to be hacked by some nefarious Russians.   Then the price showed 52.50, but I was charged $70.   Also, my Windows 10 laptop cannot run this software, and I cannot upgrade it to Windows 11. BUMMER!!!  Why can't the programmers make it compatible with Windows 10? All their previous versions did.    There is an astronomical amount of grief I have every year with this customer-unfriendly company.   Once I get the software installed, it is fine. The product is good, but the company stinks.

Q.  Can someone claim a refund of  his or her tax of 2013? A. No.  There is a three year limit for claiming  a refund.   However, there is no time limit, for filing income tax returns, if you owe tax.  There is software out there to prepare the return (Google tax prep software for 2013 tax year), but it can only be filed by mail.   Or you can prepare it manually, IRS forms at: https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs-prior-search?search=2013+form+1040

Q. I meet all the requirements to qualify as head of household, but TurboTax says I don’t? A. There are three possible explanations: 1. You entered something wrong. Carefully go thru the interview again.  2. You don't really qualify.  Review the requirements* and/or state the reasons you think you qualify, here, for us to review.  3. This early, in the tax season, the TT program may need updates.    *The main requirements for Head of Household are: a taxpayer that 1) is single or did not live with their spouse at any time during the last half of the tax year. 2) has at least one closely related dependent (usually a child) that lived with the taxpayer for more than half the year 3) pays over half of the support of the household expenses, including rent / mortgage, utilities, food.   As a rule of thumb, this means only the higher income parent can claim HoH and he/she would have to have a dependent to do so. https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tips/family/guide-to-filing-taxes-as-head-of-household/L4Nx6DYu9   There is a special rule in the case of divorced & separated (including never married) parents. When the non-custodial parent is claiming the child as a dependent/exemption/child tax credit; the custodial parent is still allowed to claim the same child for Earned Income Credit, Head of Household filing status, and day care credit.  Note in particular that the non-custodial parent can never claim the Earned Income Credit, Head of Household filing status or the day care credit, based on that child , even when the custodial parent has released the exemption to him.
I typically use TurboTax, but missed filing in April and again in Oct. I don’t see a way to file 2024 taxes in the app. How do I file my taxes from 2024 in the app?

If you sell the house after you move, you are  subject to IL tax because you are an IL resident at the time the capital gain was realized (received). But, you're still subject to MO tax because the property is located in MO.  But, as others have said, IL will give you a credit for any tax paid to MO.   Both MO and IL follow the federal tax exclusion on the first $250,000 ($500K married)  of home sale  capital gain.  To qualify you must have owned and lived in the home for 2 out of the 5 years prior to the sale (reduced exceptions to  the two year rule are available depending on the reasons for the move; job change being the most common).    For tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2025, Missouri law (HB 594) allows individuals to deduct 100% of all capital gains reported for federal income tax purposes when determining their Missouri adjusted gross income.

I have TT 2025 installed on my MAC computer.  I transferred my 2024 return info to a new tax return and saved it when exiting.  Whenever I restart TT, it wants to begin a new return, rather than taking me to the partially completed return that I previously saved.  Why is that?  (I can get to the previously saved tax return by clicking chose another tax return from that start page, but shouldn't TT initially take me to the return I previously started?   thanks Bob Wittmer

More info is needed.   Which of these situations applies to you?     Do you need to start a new 2024 return that you had not previously started?   If so, that cannot be done online.  You would need to buy 2024 desktop software and install it on your computer if you wish to use TurboTax. Or did you previously start a 2024 online return and now need to finish it?   If so, we can tell you how to download the *.tax2024 data file so you can open and finish it in the 2024 desktop software.   If you already paid for a 2024 online product, TurboTax Support "should" furnish you the software to install. Or did you previously finish a 2024 online return but never filed it, and now need to download the PDF so you can file by printing, dating, signing, and mailing?    If so, we can tell you how to find the 2024 return PDF in your online account.  To make any changes in it, however, you would need to use the 2024 desktop software. Whichever situation you have, be aware that a 2024 return cannot be efiled with TurboTax.  It will have to be printed, signed, dated, and mailed--a Federal return to the IRS and a state return (if applicable) to the state tax agency.   It's recommended to mail them with a method that has tracking.

If you used Online TurboTax previously and now can't find the past online returns in your account, then you either didn't proceed far enough into your 2025 online return interview to find them (you don't have to actually prepare the 2025), or you could have multiple accounts. I'll discuss both scenarios below.   This answer assumes your previous returns were prepared in Online TurboTax.   Any return prepared in desktop TurboTax will not be in an Online account.  Here's how one would normally find past-year online returns and how to troubleshoot for multiple accounts (User IDs) if necessary (many people end up with more than 1 account.)  The pathway to download the PDF or tax data file depends on whether or not you have started an online 2025 return.  I provide both scenarios below, so choose which one is appropriate for your situation.   If you have not yet started a 2025 online return: Sign in to your account.   What you see next depends on whether or not you have already started a 2025 return in that account.   If your left column menu is minimal, and does not have a Tax Home tab displayed, that would imply you have not started preparing a 2025 return in that account.  If you haven't yet started a return, it will start asking you some questions.  Answer those preliminary questions on a few screens (you don't actually have to prepare a return), and then when you are far enough into the process, the left menu column will change, and you'll then see a Tax Home option in the left menu column.  Do not click the Documents tab.  Instead, click on Tax Home.  Then on the Tax Home screen, scroll way down to the bottom to "Your Tax Returns & Documents".  Expand that section and choose the past year you want.   If your past returns are not shown there, then you likely have multiple accounts and signed into the wrong one.  I'll tell you below how to troubleshoot.   If you have already started a 2025 online return: Log in, and if you've already started a 2025 return in that account, then it may already open at the Tax Home.  If not, click the Tax Home tab in the left column menu.  Do not use the Documents tab.  At the Tax Home scroll down and expand "Your Tax Returns & Documents."   If the past returns are not there, see the steps below.   If you do all that and can't find the past return, here's how to look for multiple accounts: You can have up to 5 accounts that use the same email address for notification purposes.  A User ID may be an email address, but it doesn't have to be.  It might be only part of an email address, or it can be anything at all.   To get a list of your User IDs, reset password, and recover account access, etc., you can use the tool at the link below.  When using the Account Recovery tool, try using your phone number first if you can still access it.   After that, if necessary, then run the tool on your email address(es) you can access. NOTE: Before running the account recovery tool below, log out of all Intuit accounts including this user forum, or you might end up in a loop.  Then clear your browser Internet cache, close your browser, then reopen it, and go to the link below.  You may wish to copy this link so you can paste it into the new browser session. https://myturbotax.intuit.com/account-recovery If still no luck after running that on your phone number you can still access and email address(es) that you can access,  here's another method:          Go back to the tool again, but this time leave the data field blank, scroll down a bit, then choose the small blue link that says "Try something else", and it will look you up by other parameters.
