I got a letter from TurboTax saying that I will need to have Windows 11 installed on my computer to use Turbo tax; unfortunately for me, as I was loading Windows 11 on my laptop, it completely wiped out my hard drive and I had no back up. All my historical Turbotax filings are gone (for both Real Estate filings for my LLCs and personal filings).   I use Turbotax Business for real estate holdings by my three LLCs and I use Turbotax Premium for my personal Income and real estate holdings in my name.   Can anybody tell me what I need to do for 2025 since anytime I load the Turbotax Software on my desktop, it always loads historical data.   I am very worried about the Depreciation basis for my real estate holdings.   Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

I am the Executor for the Estate of an individual that recently passed away, and he owned a small but long-lived C Corporation 100% (Sole Shareholder.) Last year, he made a Dividend distribution from the Corporation to himself and I am working on his personal tax return.   He was well over 65, and in years preceding the Dividend distribution, was only taking Social Security, usually ending with a Zero Tax Due return. The company has been "quiet" in recent years and has had no significant recent income, thus the distribution has been sourced by historical retained earnings.   Given this situation, is it likely that the recent Dividend Distribution will be considered as Qualified, resulting in a lower tax rate?  If the Dividends are not "automatically" considered  Qualified, is there additional information that I can gather to support the case for Qualified Distributions? Thank you in advance for your help!

Since it appears to be one payment split then enter it as "Other reportable income"; no need to use a Schedule E for this.    In the "Wages and Income" section scroll to "Less Common Income"  Start/Update "Miscellaneous Income" Start/Update "Other reportable income" Did you receive other taxable income?  YES Description - If you received a form 1099-Misc be sure to indicate form 1099-Misc in the description box.  Something like "1099-Misc Good Neighbor or Windfarm Nuisance" should work.  If there was no 1099-Misc then just describe as "Good Neighbor or Windfarm Nuisance payment." Enter the payment amount Done This will enter the amount as other income on Schedule 1, line 8z which carries to line 8 on the form 1040.   Alternatively, if you received a 1099-Misc, you can follow Pattif's instructions in the earlier post and extracted below. This too will enter the income on Schedule 1, line 8z.   Go to Other Common Income in the Income & Expenses section, Click Start at the 1099-MISC box Enter info from 1099-MISC, Describe the reason for this 1099-MISC, and Continue Does one of these uncommon situations apply?, Choose None of these apply and Continue Check that No, it didn't involve work like my main job How often did you get income for windfarm nuisance fee, Choose I got it in 2021 and Continue Did the windfarm nuisance fee pay involve an intent to earn money, Choose, No, it didn't …. @juham2013   I haven't bought my 2025 program yet but I have installed prior  years on different computers when I need to get a new computer.    I had to go from Windows 8 to Windows 10 a couple years ago to install Turbo Tax.   I was able to transfer everything from the Windows 8 computer and able to install the prior years programs too.     Yes all you need to transfer into 2025 is the file ending in .tax2024 from the old computer.  So make sure you have that file and know where it is.  It should be in your Documents in a Turbo Tax folder.  Copy the .tax2024 file to a flash drive so you can copy it into the new computer.    And actually you can transfer the .tax2024 file into Windows or Mac desktop programs.  Mac uses the same data file.     Regarding viewing your return  I say that so if you need to print or look at a prior year without installing that program you can get a copy of the pdf, like to give to someone like a lender etc.  You should be saving each year as the .taxyyyy data file and also as a PDF file when you are done filing.

I am in a similar situation as both my Windows and my Mac are no longer supported by TT 2025. I researched H&R Block and their 2025 Deluxe download is still compatible with Windows 10 and my current Mac OS Ventura so after over 20 plus years I will be switching to H& R Block in 2025. H&R will collect TT2024 data transfer to their 2025 Deluxe version
"By default" I meant to write, when talking about saving filings as PDF

And only if they offered it to you. You can't self select it. Then you don't get it until AFTER your efile is Accepted by the IRS which is usually late January. https://turbotax.intuit.com/refund-advance

I have never used TT online versions, to be exact, and will NOT, going forward.  I download TT software to my laptop each year. Cheers! JJ

Hi "VolvoGirl"! Sure value the quick response.   Now, from some of your other responses to other people, I am assuming that you have actually done this already and thus can unequivocally state that I won't have a problem, correct? Indeed, under "Documents\TurboTax", I do see filing documents (PDFs as I save filings - by fault - as PDF every year) from prior years.   That said, there is no need to worry about the incompatibility between TT SOFTWARE versions (Windows 10/Windows11) and TT2025 would be able to import DATA from those PDF files, correct? I was a little confused by "to view your return" that you wrote as, I am not necessarily needing to VIEW but rather need to have TT2025 IMPORT all the DATA automatically. Cheers! JJ
I applied and it's stuck on pending and that i will receive a call to finish application. What was the point of allowing folks to apply to just never move on the loans. Crazy

@juham2013   Also will you want to install the 2024 program or prior on the new computer?   Since you now have to log into an Intuit Account when you first install it, all your downloads and license codes are listed there (even if you bought it from somewhere else) so if you need to install it again or install on another computer, even on the other operating system (Windows, Mac) you can download it again here, https://accounts.intuit.com/app/account-manager/productsBilling/turbotax   See this article on how to move your tax return to another computer……. https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/tax-data-file/help/how-do-i-move-my-tax-data-file-to-another-computer/00/26128

@juham2013   Nothing has changed.  You can Transfer 2024 data into 2025,  either to the desktop program or to online.  You just need to copy the tax return data file to the new computer.   You only need the tax return data file ending in .tax2023 to transfer into 2024 or .tax2024 to transfer into next year. You can't transfer the programs. They have to be installed from the CD or Download. You don't need to install older programs unless you need to amend or you didn't save the pdf file. And they only support the last 3 years. If you install an older year you won't be able to update it or download any state programs, so you won't be able to open your return.   For Windows…..What I would do on the old computer, is copy the whole Turbo Tax folder that is under your Documents. That should be where the .tax files and pdf files are stored. Also if you haven't done it, I would open each year in the program and save it as a pdf file, go to FILE - SAVE TO PDF so you don't need the program installed to view your return. Copy that folder to a flash drive or best yet is to burn it to a CD or DVD and then you will have a backup of them. Then on the new computer copy the folder (or files) from the flash drive to your Documents folder.
This is new---I do not know if these pros help with prior year returns, but try calling one to ask.   https://turbotax.intuit.com/local-tax-offices/

Oodles of responses here which I scanned through quickly.   I suppose that TT is trying to FORCE people to file taxes NOT using downloaded versions of TT!     The laptop which has Windows 10 Home edition on it that I have used for filing my taxes  via a downloaded version of TT for many years is not compatible with Windows 11.  It would appear that I need to buy a new lap-top. Now, could someone confirm to me the following? 1. How will TT 2025 be able to import ANY data from my tax filing from 2024 that was done using TT2024 software as TT2025 and TT2024 are installed on TWO different lap-tops? 2. I believe the answer to the above is - NO, TT2025 won't be able to import ANY DATA. IF, indeed, the answer is NO, that really sucks as one of the great features has been to be able to have TT software automatically import DATA from previous years!    Data from sale of stock for instance, especially those sales that were made at a LOSS that carry over. I would value suggestions and answers very much? JJ
