I need to back up my computer before I upgrade from Windows 10 to 11. I have always bought the CD/download version at Costco. What program/file do I need to look for in my computer and to be sure to back up to my external hard drive so that in 2026, Turbo Tax will automatically import/remember my 2025 taxes like it always does? I have all of my past years saved as pdf "copies" onto my desktop so I will save those to my external hard drive too just in case. Thank you

Q. If I do not owe any taxes, and the government doesn’t owe me any money back, do I have to file? A. Probably (usually) not. But those two facts, alone, do not determine whether you need to file.  The filing requirement is based on "gross income" (not "taxable income"). In addition to the table on page 9 of the instructions, there is a separate table (lower numbers) on page 10 for those who are, or can be, claimed as a dependent.

yup that's a conversion   but the conversion is part of your 2025 taxes not 2024, all you should put into your 2024 return is the non-deductible contribution to the Trad IRA, which will be reflected as a basis in your IRA  online 14 of Form 8606 which carries forward to 2025.   Roth conversions are taxed by calendar year, when you get the 1099-R for 2025 you would then include the conversion in your 2025 taxes.   See https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/retirement-benefits/enter-backdoor-roth-ira-conversion/L7gGPjKVY_US_en_US?uid=mgks2a0a   Check there was no misunderstanding with your brokerage also if you asked them to "recharacterize" it - check the transaction was classified as a contribution to your Trad IRA and conversion to your Roth IRA (which is just a transfer between IRAs), not a contribution to your Roth IRA.  You should also have Form 5498s showing the contribution to the correct account.

I see that other people have had this problem as well, but it has not yet been addressed. I am trying to enter the EIN and address for my child care care provider, but it will not accept a military address. I am living overseas on a military base, and the address for the daycare center is an APO AP (Army Post Office/Armed Forces Pacific) address. Normally, AP (Armed Forces Pacific) would be a valid state that can be selected, but it is not listed as an option. If I try to leave the state selection blank, it will not accept it. If I try to use the zip code corresponding to the military address, it says that the zip code does not match the state and it will not accept it. If I try to select "Foreign or U.S. Territory" for the state, which is not accurate either, it demands a zip code, but will not accept it. The only option I see that I have is to select that my care provider is a foreign provider, but then I am not given the option to list the US EIN. This is a bug or oversight in Turbotax. You should provide the option for a military address for people living overseas on military bases.

you can't claim 2023 depreciation in 2024.  If taking depreciation in 2023 was valid; the asset was placed into service that year; it must be claimed.  it would seem you need to amend 2023. if you are going to claim section 179, it must be initially claimed in the year the asset is place into service. you cannot skip 179 for year 1 then claim it on the asset in year 2 or later. there are various limitations that apply to the deductibility of 179

Turbotax deletes data after 7 years so 2016 and 2017 are gone. the IRS also deletes data that old. You would have had to save a PDF copy on your computer's hard drive (not Turbotax servers). To open a 2022 tax file online in 2025, you will need to purchase and download the TurboTax software for the year 2022. TurboTax Online and the mobile app are only available for the current tax year, 2024

Hi All, I contributed a total of $1,813 in excess on 401k across two employers in 2024, as I changed jobs during the year. Specifically, I contributed $7,153 to one plan and $17,658 to another. Both employers are not willing to issue a refund since I contacted them after April 1, 2025. How should I report this excess contribution to the IRS, if at all? I assume I won’t receive any 1099-R since I didn’t get a refund from either employer. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated—I’d like to make sure I can file correctly before the October 15, 2025 deadline. Thank you!
Thank you! Your comments are very helpful. I really appreciate them.
