My company made a mistake and deducted Yonkers local tax from my payslips so this is appearing as local tax paid on my W-2. I didn't work or live in Yonkers in 2025 and have no Yonkers income. So I need to get this money back. TT is showing an error and is suggesting I select Yonkers Income Yes, but if I do this the amount I owe the state goes up by the nearly amount of local taxes I paid by mistake. 1. This doesn't seem right, is it? 2. Will TT allow me to submit electronically if I leave it as No and get this "error"?

Do you know where the document number is on your license? If not, tell us the state; or you can get the info by calling your state DMV; or Googling it.

There have been some issues this year with the interview skipping some screens, like the "Let's enter [your name]'s HSA contributions" screen where you enter "personal" HSA contributions (i.e., directly to the HSA custodian, not through the employer). As you know, HSA contributions made through your employer are shown in box 12 on your W-2 with a code of W. Once your W-2 is entered, do NOT enter this code W amount anyplace else on the return.
The workaround to missing screens is to do an "HSA Reset" to remove all HSA data from your return so you can start fresh. See HSA Reset at the bottom.
After you finish the HSA Reset, then go to Deductions & Credits->Medical->HSA, MSA, 1099-SA and click on Start (Update). This will take you to the front door of the HSA interview. Be sure to go all the way through the interview until you arrive at the screen HSA Summary.
As an aside, HSAs are some of the best tax advantages that the IRS (well, Congress) provides, because you save taxes on the money going in, and if you spend the money only on qualified medical expenses, the money going out will also be tax-free.
HSA Reset
1. make a copy of your W-2(s) (if you don't have the paper copies)
2. delete your W-2(s) (use the garbage can icon next to the W-2(s) on the Income screen)
*** Desktop/Windows***
3. Go to the upper right and click on Forms, and
4. Select the desired form(s) (1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)). Note the Delete Form button at the bottom of the form’s screen.
*** Desktop/Mac***
3. Switch to Forms Mode by selecting the Forms icon.
4. From the menu, select the form(s) (1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)) you want to remove (if you don't see it, select Open Form at the top). From the Forms menu, select Remove [form name].
*** Online ***
3. go to Tax Tools (on the left), and navigate to Tools->Delete a form
4. delete form(s) 1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)
5. go back and re-add your W-2(s), preferably adding them manually
6. go back and restart the entire HSA interview....

Many states don’t require that. Try ignoring that window and just click continue.

Thank you for the detailed response. I have entered all of the information on the forms that TT asks for. I am using the desktop version of home and business. Yet TT shows I have no exemptions and also fully taxes the gain at the marginal tax rate, not the capital gains tax rate. It seems there is a mistake and I’m not sure how to get the software corrected. It is up to date.

Any of you can deduct the portion of the mortgage interest and property taxes you paid on your personal return as an itemized deduction, provided you are legally obligated to pay the loan or property taxes. This is assuming the house is your primary residence or it is a second home of yours. If the house is rented out, you can deduct your portion of the expenses against your portion of the rental income.

There have been some issues this year with the interview, so I suggest that you delete the 8889 and other HSA forms before continuing. So let's do an "HSA Reset" to remove all HSA data from your return so you can start fresh.
This has proven to be an effective workaround for pagination issues in the HSA interview (like the screens for the mysterious spouse).
As an aside, HSAs are some of the best tax advantages that the IRS (well, Congress) provides, because you save taxes on the money going in, and if you spend the money only on qualified medical expenses, the money going out will also be tax-free.

I'm trying to finish filing my taxes and turbo tax refuses to let me. Whether on my phone, my computer, or in the app I click on start for the billing portion, I get taken to a page that shows how much I owe which is nothing, I verify that my address is correct and I click continue. The page then thinks about it for a minute and then loops me right back to where I just came from telling me to start the billing portion of my filing process so I click start and it takes me to the same page I was just on where it tells me that I owe nothing and ask me to verify my billing address so I verify my billing address and I click continue and the page thinks about it for a minute and then takes me right back to the page I just came from where it asks me to start finalizing my filing process and this just continues in a never-ending loop I'm never able to actually progress to the point where I can file my taxes. And of course TurboTax isn't willing to provide any sort of support unless I pay for it because they're a bunch of greedy corporate monsters so I need help from the community on how to actually get these taxes filed.

I noticed when I checked my Security Settings in Schwab (after getting an email that my third-party preferences had changed) that my current web session "time out" is 30 minutes (apparently the default, as I don't remember ever changing it.) So anyone who has a super-long 1099 might try increasing the web session timeout to see if that helps.
