"they claim they're still processing it" So I'll assume you have already spoken to the IRS by phone. So if you don't get good info from the IRS, then the next step, if you wish, is the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service. It's a free service, and they are especially prone to help if you have not been able to get timely info from the IRS or especially if you have an economic hardship. https://www.irs.gov/taxpayer-advocate https://www.taxpayeradvocate.irs.gov/ https://www.irs.gov/advocate/who-may-use-the-taxpayer-advocate-service To use them, select your state using this tool: https://www.taxpayeradvocate.irs.gov/contact-us/#FindlocalTAS

let's begin with the more likely scenario and then see if it even matters.
If you lived in and owned your home for at least 2 of the 5 years prior to the sale date, then the first $250,000 of capital gains ($500,000 if filing JOINT) are excluded. So there is no capital gains tax.
is your capital gains estimated to be even higher than that? please post back the particulars. In most cases, the capital gains tax would be 15% of the gain over the exclusions noted above.

When you are asked for last year's AGI for e-filing you enter the AGI that was on Form 1040 line 11 of the 2023 tax return that you filed. It doesn't matter if the filing status was different. It's not asking for your individual AGI. It's asking for the AGI that was on the tax return.
Are you filing as single this year because you were divorced or widowed before the end of 2024? If you were still married at the end of 2024 you cannot file as single. You have to file as either married filing jointly or married filing separately.

@Random Guy 1 Starting in 2023, they moved the "Amend a Return" button way down in the bottom left corner, and it may be out of view. Like you, I at first didn't see it. I had to scroll way down the screen to make it appear. See image below. NOTE: Do not make any changes in your return until the Amend process instructs you to do so. Also, it's a good idea to first make a backup of the original *.taxYYYY data file and PDF before amending, and archive them somewhere safe and secure. Then, if something goes haywire during the amending process, you still have the original data file and PDF. Be sure it has a different file name, such as "2023taxreturn_original" (or whatever you choose), so it doesn't get mixed up with the amended return's data file. .

It's been close to a **bleep** year as well. I wish I was kidding, they said they sent out a check and then I guess it got lost and so **bleep** turbo tax refuses to help, irs is either down half the time or they refuse to help and I know it's just a refund but this is insane. A whole **bleep** refund check lost and nobody from TT to the **bleep** government will help me. It's actually **bleep** insane! **bleep**TURBO TAX!

Last year I filed a joint status return with my spouse, this year I filed single. I was asked to provide my AGI from last years return, which I couldn't because it would have included my spouses income. We filed together because my income was low. Will the change in filing status cause a problem when my current return is reviewed?

I assume you are using the Desktop program? If you don't see a button for Need to Amend a Filed Return? on your home screen then you can get to it here. Go to: Federal Taxes -or- Personal (for H&B) Other Tax Situations last section, Other Tax Forms Amend A Return - Click the Start or Update button How did you file the original return? Did you efile or mail it? You first might have to tell the program it was filed. If you efiled you have to check the filing status inside the program. Open your return and go up to menu item File > Electronic Filing > Check Electronic Filing Status

I am trying to amend tax returns for prior years. For 2021 and 2022, it was no problem -- TurboTax asked me as soon as I opened the return if I wished to amend, and prepared a 1040X and applicable state returns for each year. (Apparently it doesn't e-file, but whatever, I can send it in.) TurboTax for 2023 isn't doing the same thing. It's only giving me options to edit the existing return, which has already been filed; nothing about amending. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

@Mrsladyj You can edit your original post by clicking the three little blue dots on the upper right. I suggest editing your original post to include the fact that you are trying to remove an AR state credit so that someone more familiar with that state's tax forms can help you to remove your entry for that credit if you are unable to locate the screen where you entered it. A lot of information flows from the federal return to the state return, but that particular credit would have been entered only your state form so you will not find it on your federal return.

Here's how to edit the overpayment amount. I don't know what product you are using, so I've provided steps for both. Online TurboTax: Log in and open your 2024 return, if not already open. Once the return is open, click on the Search icon at the top right (magnifying glass). In the search box enter this exact phrase: applied overpayment (without quotes) and then click the adjacent magnifying glass icon. Click on Jump to applied overpayment. Next screen: Estimates and Other Income Taxes Paid. Scroll down about 2/3 of the page to 2023 Refund Applied to 2024 and expand that section. In the submenu choose the proper topic for type of payment (Federal, State, Local.) NOTE: Before filing, make sure the corrected overpayment shows up correctly on your return. These steps are for the desktop software: Federal Taxes tab (Personal tab in Home and Business) Subtab Deductions & Credits. "I'll choose what I work on." Your 2024 Deductions & Credits summary page. Scroll down to the topic "Estimates and Other Taxes Paid" Choose subtopic "Other income taxes" and Start (or update.) On the Other Income Taxes screen scroll down to the topic "2023 Refund Applied to 2024." Choose the type of overpayment and click Start (or update.) Make sure the corrected amount shows up on your Form 1040 before filing.

When I processed my 2023 tax return, it showed I was getting a refund and I elected to have the refund (overpayment) applied to my 2024 taxes. The IRS later informed me that I made a mistake and actually owed them money. (I mistakenly double-counted one of the estimated tax payments that I made.) I paid the tax due, which wasn't large. However, that meant I didn't have a refund to apply to 2024. Now I'm doing my 2024 taxes (filed for an extension) but Turbo Tax is showing the erroneous credit from the prior year's return, which will make my taxes wrong again this year. How can I remove the 2023 over-payment/credit? I can't find a way to adjust this number.

Federal and state refunds come from completely separate entities. There is no rule as to which one will come in first or how long it will be between their arrival in your account.
TurboTax gives you an estimated date for receiving your refund based on a 21 day average from your date of acceptance, but it can take longer. “21 days” is not a promise from TurboTax or the IRS.
First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:
https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/
Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control. TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.
You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount (line 35a of your 2024 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:
https://www.irs.gov/refunds
To track your state refund:
https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/track-state-refund/L3jgO8PGs_US_en_US?uid=lt447ebr
If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing
