Federal and state refunds come from completely separate entities, There is no rule as to which one will come first or how much time there will be between their arrivals. Some states process returns quickly and some are very slow.

Go to Federal> Deductions and Credits> Your Home to enter mortgage interest, property taxes, and mortgage insurance that you paid in 2023. You should have a 1098 from your mortgage lender that shows this information. Lenders send these in January/early February or you may be able to import the 1098 from the lender’s website.

You cannot change the tax year. The current online program is for 2024 only. Only a 2024 return can be prepared online and only a 2024 return can be e-filed.
Online preparation and e-filing for 2021, 2022, and 2023 is permanently closed.
Note: The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac. It cannot be used on a mobile device.

If you need to prepare a return for 2021, 2022, or 2023 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign, and mail the return(s)

You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.
Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
Your itemized deductions have to be more than your standard deduction before you will see a change in your tax owed or tax refund. The deductions you enter do not necessarily count “dollar for dollar;” many of them are subject to meeting tough thresholds—medical expenses, for example, must meet a threshold that is pretty hard to reach. (Only the amount that is MORE than 7.5% of your AGI counts) The software program uses all the IRS rules that apply to the expenses you enter, and it tells you if you have enough to use your itemized deductions or if using the standard deduction is more advantageous for you. Under the tax laws that have been in effect since 2018, some deductions have been capped—there is a $10,000 limit to the itemized deductions for state, local, property and sales taxes.
The standard deduction makes some of your income “tax free.” It is not a refund. You will see your standard or itemized deduction amount on line 12 of your 2023 Form 1040.
2023 STANDARD DEDUCTION AMOUNTS
SINGLE $13,850 (65 or older/legally blind + $1850)
MARRIED FILING SEPARATELY $13,850 (65 or older/legally blind + $1500)
MARRIED FILING JOINTLY $27,700 (65+/legally blind) ) + $1500 per spouse
HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD $20,800 (65 or older/blind) + $1850)

There is no stimulus for 2024. The federal stimulus checks were issued for tax years 2020 and 2021; it is too late to get that stimulus money now in 2025.
Do you mean you need to prepare tax returns for some past years as well as for 2024?
Each tax year has to be filed separately using the forms for the specific tax year. They cannot be combined in any way--do not even put them in the same envelope when you mail them. Software for past years is available back to 2021. Any earlier years can only be prepared on paper forms by hand--and those refunds have been forfeited now.
The current online program can only be used for a 2024 return--no other year. And if you did not file a timely 2023 return you will have trouble e-filing 2024. When it asks for your 2023 AGI try using zero. If zero does not work then you have to print, sign and mail 2024.

I had this question/problem for tax year of 2023. I was still not able to get turbo tax to give me the option for tabor tax refund after trying the above suggestions. I was still either doing it incorrectly or the software was preventing me. My solution was going directly to Colorado State and filing an amended return which worked easily and I did receive the refund. For 2024 I did not have an issue but I was more careful not to miss it this time in the initial preparation.

(a) what do you mean by "US-Resident" -- are you saying you are US person ( citizen/GreenCard/Resident for Tax purposes ) or that you are NRA in the US not having met the SPT yet?
(b) If I assume that you are US person with US Tax-home, and your spouse ( Canadian citizen ?) lives with you , then , absent any legal documents/ agreements otherwise, marital prop may come under State laws -- marital ownership of assets.
(c) In general, when filing jointly, as long as one of you are liable for the debt, interest paid is deductible under the home/second-home grouping , if you take itemized deduction.
Since you are filing MFJ, I am assuming that your spouse has a TIN ( SSN or ITIN )--yes ?
Does this help or am I in the left field ? Is there more I can do for you ?
