I would like to take a deeper look at this. However, I need a diagnostic file which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to us by following the directions below:   TurboTax Online: Sign into your online account. Locate the Tax Tools on the left-hand side of the screen. A drop-down will appear. Select Tools On the pop-up screen, click on “Share my file with agent.” This will generate a message that a diagnostic file gets sanitized and transmitted to us. Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response. TurboTax Desktop/Download Versions: Open your return. Click the Online tab in the black bar across the top of TurboTax and select “Send Tax File to Agent” * This will generate a message that a diagnostic copy will be created.  Click on OK and the tax file will be sanitized and transmitted to us. Please provide the Token Number (including the dash) that was generated in the response. *(If using a MAC, go to the menu at the top of the screen, select Help, then, “Send Tax File to Agent”)

Yes.  Losses from a business are considered ordinary income and therefore can be used to offset other income taxed at the ordinary income tax rates.   The net operating loss carry forward from a prior year would be reported on Schedule 1, line 8a which would then flow into your Form 1040 and potentially reduce your overall income, which would include an IRA withdrawal if applicable.  Please see IRS Publication 536 for more details on how the net operating loss needs to be reported.   @jakino

Michigan, why is my state return under review again?  I called and they said it might take until September, 2025 to get.  I filed April 17th.  Why is this happening?  It happened last year, but didn't take this long.  Now it is happening again.  I always use TURBO TAX.  Can someone give me an answer?

Since you are out of the United States you can still get an extension to October 15 for filing your 2024 U.S. tax return, if you need it. Because you are out of the country you already have an automatic 2-month extension to June 16. To get an additional 4-month extension to October 15 you have to file Form 4868 with the IRS. The extension is only for filing your tax return, not for paying any tax that you owe. Payment was due by April 15 in any case. If you will have a payment due on your tax return, you can reduce the penalty and interest for late payment by sending a payment with Form 4868 or making an extension payment with Direct Pay on the IRS web site. If you are using the desktop TurboTax software you can use TurboTax to fill out Form 4868 for the additional 4-month extension. You cannot use TurboTax Online to request the additional extension. If you are using TurboTax Online the simplest thing to do would be to download Form 4868 from the IRS web site, fill it out yourself, print it, and mail it. Be sure to check the box on line 8 to indicate that you are out of the country. To fill out Form 4868 for the 4-month extension with the desktop TurboTax software you have to go through the "File an Extension" section of the Step-by-Step interview twice. Go to Federal Taxes > Other Tax Situations. Under Other Tax Forms click the Start button for "File an extension." The first time you have to select the option to "prepare an out of country automatic extension statement." Enter the explanation and continue through the interview until you get back to the "Other Tax Situations" screen. Then select "File an extension" again and it will give you the option to "prepare an application for an additional four month out of country extension."

A 2023 return cannot be e-filed.  It can only be filed by mail now.   You say you did not "file" it---did you prepare the 2023 return?   If it has not even been prepared, you will need to use desktop download software to prepare it; you can no longer use online TurboTax for 2023.      You will be able to access the 2023 return you started by using the exact same account and user ID that you used when you started it.   But you can no longer use online software for any further changes.       Start a 2024  return online and enter some personal information  so that the menu on the left opens up and lets you access your past year returns.   Online tax preparation and e-filing for 2023 returns is now permanently closed.    Now it is too late to use online software or to e-file. If you have any changes/corrections at all to make to your 2023 return, you now have to complete it using desktop software, which you must download to a full PC or Mac  (not to a mobile device). Then you need to print, sign and mail it.   https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/printers-printing/finish-prior-year-return-started-turbotax-online/L9Oe4M90A_US_en_US?uid=m68tffpe   If you already paid for your online software you can ask customer support for a download of the desktop software.   They are available from 5 a.m. to 9p.m. Pacific time daily   https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1899263-what-is-the-turbotax-phone-number     If you are getting a refund, there is no penalty for filing late.  If you owe tax due, then file and pay the amount due as shown on the Form 1040, but expect a bill later from the IRS for the penalty and interest you will owe.  Only the IRS will calculate this—TurboTax will not calculate it.     When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.   Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

The "usual rule" is that if you retired from a job, but are still working some where else, you put the date you retired from the first job. But, as others have said, the actual rule is state specific.     In addition to a reply, identifying the state, I suggest you edit the "subject" to include the state name. That should get more eyes on your question.

It's now June, but I have been experiencing the same issue trying to file a federal and two state returns.     - The federal loaded when I only transmitted it. - After lots of attempts at fixes, my state returns electronically loaded when I completely exited a VPN app (AOL's Private WiFi) on my notebook.  The app had been running in background, but was not actually routing data through it (as I was otherwise using a secure home network).    I was on hold with about the 5th Turbo tech assistant over a period of two weeks when I noticed the vpn button and decided to try a full exit ... and each state then loaded.  A friend just told me that his printer will not work while the VPN is running on his machine, so I guess there is some connection.  Hope this helps you or someone in the future!
