Hey everyone, I'm a U.S. citizen living in Canada over the past 20 years and just this year experienced all the problems described in this forum with no credit card with a U.S. address. I couldn't even update my credit card info for the downloadable product for 2024 because it has a Canadian address! So, I called the Intuit help desk and the conclusion was I couldn't purchase Turbotax for 2024 and thus basically cannot use their product anymore!   I just tried out HR Block's expatonline product and had zero problems, including paying with my credit card with a Canadian address. So, problem solved by switching to the HRBlock product for me.

I have been making monthly COBRA Premium subsidy payments since Jan. 2025. My employer was supposed to pay to the third-party directly but long story short, I have been making the payments and now, the ex-employer will reimburse me for 'x' number of weeks as part of the severance which would be a lump sum, less applicable taxes, payroll deductions and withholdings.   Questions: 1) Should the COBRA reimbursement be taxed? I am looking at https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/cobra-questions-and-answers-for-employees-and-former-employees and looked at the section on "Taxability of Susidies", Q4. Based on this section/Q4, I will not qualify as the MAGI would exceed the threshold mentioned. Or, should I ask the ex-employer to send a separate payment for the COBRA reimbursement that is not taxed? 2) Where would I report the COBRA payments I have made? Would it be Schedule A in the Medical section where I can only deduct the amount of COBRA premiums exceeding 7.5% of the AGI? 3) If I am a high-income individual where my MAGI exceeds the $145K threshold then it does not matter if the ex-employer reimburses the COBRA premium subsidy as part of the overall severance - is this an accurate statement?   Can you please help clarify this? Thank you in advance.

Thank you for the clarification.  You cannot mark anywhere on Form 2441 that your parents are providing the care.  You can still pay them, report these costs as part of your Child & Dependent Care Expenses, and your parents will be required to report this income on their tax return as other income on Schedule 1.  Since it sounds like you meet the requirement, you would not need to withhold Social Security or Medicare taxes like you would for a normal household employee, and as such, would not treat them as household employees when you complete your tax return.  That is the essential difference.     If the IRS has any concerns, they will reach out with a letter requesting additional information.  You can then provide the information needed to show that your parents are providing the care and meet the exception to not have taxes withheld as a household employee.   Please also see do I need to file IRS Schedule H.   @lixiang

It's June 15 and our expat deadline for us living abroad.  I am at the end of the 'free' online service and because I have a foreign bank acct (under $10K) you are requiring me to upgrade to Deluxe.  I have a US credit card with BoA for 25 years I have lived here. It it registered, of course, to my UK address so they know where I am. I have no living US relative any longer and it is deceitful to use a US address where you do not reside. I wanted to finish my taxes today. I don't get why I need beyond the basic one anyways. In the past few years I have been buying the CD from Amazon.com and they shipped it to me. Pricey, but they took care of it being done correctly.  BEFORE THAT, we used to be able to download from DIGITAL RIVER IRELAND the digital form of any of the products. What happened to that choice?      It is poor advertising to say expats can do their taxes only to find out after completing them, that you have no access to the paid software.   Can I get a digital purchase sorted? Back in the early 00's there used to be an option to contact Intuit to get a download.  Help please?  I am happy to pay having wasted all this time today. If you are not going to help expats, you need to be up front about it.

No, that is not a loss you can deduct on a tax return.  It was your personal decision to discard it.
States provide non-driver's IDs if you don't/can't drive.   Not sure, but maybe passport or greencard could work?

@laura_kozisek    I'm not sure that the import files are arranged in a way that TTX would recognize that there was more info to import. ____ The only solution I see would be for TTX to ban 1099-INT imports for these problem financial providers until such time as the software teams from BOTH work together offline, to figure out what is causing the problem...and then Fix IT.

@arejfour    Microsoft issued a "second" W11 OS update this week.....after just updating my W11 a day or two ago, another one appeared this morning.   The new one has a new number...and takes unusually long to download and install.  The install reboot almost looked like it was hung at 0%....so I went and watched TV for an hour.....eventually it installed.  (laptop was started first and it's still working on it.)   Folks with W11, might need that most recent W11 update fully installed first, before the TTX update will go thru.
