It's probably too late to do anything for 2024. Just work on reducing next year's 2025 taxes. And ps... Adjusted Gross Income is called AGI.

Thanks for your response but due to high ADI (Adjusted Gross Income) we were not eligible to make an IRA contribution to lower our taxes. Also, we don't have option of contributing to HSA since we are not on a high deductible plan. I am looking for other options such as contributions to 529, or similar. Any recommendations ?

Hi everyone: My full-time college student child prepared their 2024 federal and Michigan taxes with TT. We have a 529 for tuition, etc. We followed TT's directions for both their and my returns using the forms from the 529 plan administrator (TIAA) and the university, but the state is now claiming we owe more tax due to some error I don't completely understand. Does anyone have any clues? Has anyone else had issues with managing 529 withdrawals when preparing returns? I do recall TT wasn't very clear on exactly what to do while entering this data, but in the end, TT determined the return was correct, and so we filed it. Now, the state feels otherwise, and I cannot determine if their claim is correct or why. Lastly, if I need to, does anyone know where I might have someone well-versed in 529 plans evaluate the return and this letter? Thanks in advance!!

You will have to print and mail prior year returns. After you downloaded the program did you install it and activate it with the 16 digit License Code? Double click on the file you downloaded to install. Are you on Windows or Mac? Then it should start a return or if it doesn't you can go up to File-New Tax Return. What version did you buy? This is what the program looks like. Here's my Windows 2023 Home & Business version.

the issue is: Check This Entry
Form PIT-X: Unreimbursed and uncompensated medical care expenses should have a value greater than zero if you are taking a medical care expense deduction or your deduction will be denied.
I'm not taking a medical care expense deduction, it should be 0 and it's not accepting that.

Do you really mean that you want to calculate your tax for 2026, or do you mean that you want to calculate your tax for the 2025 tax return that you will file in 2026?
Either way, realistically you can't do it right now. The tax and spending bill currently being considered in Congress is likely to make significant changes in the income tax laws for 2025 and later. Without knowing what the final bill will contain, any calculation that you do now would be just a guess.
Why do you want to calculate your 2026 (or 2025) tax now?

This is still a problem. TT clearly has the to allow us to upload documents. I don't understand why they don't fix this. Very frustrating.

I'm slightly reconsidering my response above. Let's take one stab at figuring out the problem before you go to a tax professional. But you have to provide more details.
What did the IRS letter say was wrong on your 2023 tax return?
What did the IRS letter say was wrong on your 2024 tax return?
Is it the same error (not necessarily the same amount) for both years?
Was there any significant change in your income or tax situation from 2022 to 2023, such as a different type of income or a new deduction?
Please be as specific as possible and give all the details. If possible, quote the part of the IRS letter that says what was wrong. (But don't post any personal information. This is a public web site.) Keep in mind that we can't see your tax returns or the IRS letters. We don't know anything about you or your tax situation except what you post here.

Hi there. So. I made a excess contribtuion of 3320 in 2023. I also made a 1500 excess contribution in 2024 I paid the 6% tax on the 3320 in my 2024 tax return but never took it out. Now in tax return 2025 I took out a a timely excess contribtuion for 1500 +162.68 for gains on that 1500 and took out a untimely excess contribution for that 3320 (Untimely does not require you to remove cap gains) Both of these were taken out roughly April 2025 I dont quite understand how to report this in Turbo Tax. Turbotax allows me to put in excess contributions for 2024 (1500), but I dont see an option to report untimely contributions or a form 5329. My understanding is that I will report the 162.68 in gains for 2024 excess as actual income and I will not be charged the 6% penalty on the 1500. My understandign is that I will be charged the 6% penalty again for the 3320 untimely excess in 2023. I simply dont see how to input the 3320 into turbo tax. Can someone please help. Turbo Tax allows me to report
